A Beautiful Mind (2001) Analysis

Part 1 Diagnosis

1.1 Identification of Nashs Psychological Disorders and Symptoms

In A Beautiful Mind, the main disorder that John Nash has been diagnosed is
Schizophrenia. The symptoms of this disorder are loss of the connection with the society,
disorganization of the communication process, hallucinations, trouble concentrating, and having
a paranoia situation. In this movie, Nash has a lot of miscommunicating with people around him
because of his unusual way of speaking. For instance, the scene that he is trying to get to know a
woman at the bar, he was slapped by that woman since he could not understand what that woman
really want.
The second psychological disorder that Nash has is Social Anxiety Disorder. Normally,
the symptoms of this disorder would be a chronic fear of being watched and stayed with other
people or of doing something that will embarassed them. Therefore, linked with the scene in the
movie, Nash has been defeated by men while they are playing the go game. This might be the
spark of his disorder since he walks away when he feels embarrassed.
Moreover, his third Psychological Disorder is depression. Since he has been disappointed
several times during his life, these continue to develop his disorders. Depression symptoms are
loss of interest in daily activities, feeling helplessness, loss of energy, self loathing. To clarify, in
this movie when the Professor Einstein rejected to meet him, he seems to be very disappointed
by that situation.
Nash also has Bipolar Disorder, which he might feel energetic, irritable, or happy. This
will make a person has a problem with their decision making and ordering the consequences. In
the movie, Nash has developed his depression into Bipolar Disorder since within a short period
of time he does change a lot of his moods.
Lately in his life, Nash has Social Anxiety Disorder, which he afraids to talk to the
stranger since he is not sure whether they are his hallucinations or not. The symptoms are fear of
being judged, intense fear of communicating with someone, humiliating themselves, and some
other physical symptoms. This disorder struggles his life at first, but later on he could adapt to
the particular situation. For instance, he asks people around him rather they can see them or not.

1.3 Connections between the Triggers and His Mental Problems

When Alicia takes a good care of Nash in the party, he really feels happy. Moreover, the
positive feelings like being accepted by other professors also make him feel proud of himself.
However, after that he is confronted with other problems, such as the universitys work and
pressure from his friends. This make him feel depression. Afterwards, when his emotions change
from happy to depress and depress to happy very often within a day or a short period of time.
This will later on developed into Bipolar Disorder. When he has been rejected by his Professor,
he might be afraid of knowing people. This may lead to the Social Anxiety Disorder. Together
with the scene that he stops his medicine, he does not want to disappoint his wife. This lead the
Schizophrenia Disorder again. Subsequently, his hallucinations then make him escape the room
because he afraids that someone is going to kill him. Lastly, when he has the insulin shock that
makes him feel in severe pain. Finally, this might cause him the Bipolar Disorder because he has
altered his emotions very frequent.

Part 2 Providing Therapies

2.1 Active Listening Skills Used by Alicia and Dr. Rosen

Minimal encouragement in this movie occurs several times. Alicia is considered to be a
very well listener. She always care about what Nash said. Moreover, she makes eye contact
almost all of the time she talks to Nash. This makes him feel valuable when they stayed together.

Alicia and Dr.Rosen also use paraphase skill while they talk to Nash. During the scene that Nash
explain his feeling to Dr.Rosen, they both paraphrase his words and then make use of those
words to ask him more questions.
To clarify, Alicia also utilizes the use of open-ended questions to ask him what is going
on in his life and to let him know that she still cares, including how was your day? On Dr.
Rosens side, he also helps him clarify that the hallucination is his imaginary, not the truth. He
makes him realize the truth behind Marcee, Parcher, and Herman are not real.

2.2 Analysis of Dr. Rosens Psychotherapy Office Design

Dr, Rosens Psychotherapy Office is overall calm and warmth. The tone of the color give
the emotions of warm welcoming. All of the furnitures are all aside, leaving the blank space at
the center of the room for him to discuss with the patient. The light is very dim, not so bright
compared to the other scene. This will make the patient become more relax and be able to think
without the pressure. He places the couch with the table that will make the patient feel more
secure and safe (A Beautiful Mind, 2001).

However, the Nashs room is white. There is nothing apart from a bed and a wall covered
around him. In my opinion, to let him sit in such a room may give him sometimes to evaluate his
position and his conditions. Otherwise, the patient might focus at the other objects if there are too
many decorations in their room. Moreover, he might not be able to handle the pressure and
seriousness of the room, so he might want to escape from this place and need to tell the truth and
cooperated with the psychiatrist (A Beautiful Mind, 2001).

Part 3 Reflections

It is true that Schizophrenia Disorder that John Nash has was inherited from his parents.
However, together with the stressors and pressure in the situations make him becomes even more
severe. Moreover, the hallucinations that he has are all leading to one point, which is the
situation that Nash is needed. From my perspectives, I think that when he was a child he might
be neglecting by his parents, so he was thinking that he has to be important at some point.
Therefore, his hallucinations created the atmosphere that he is needed and important. This is one
of the good movies I have watched. It gives the motivations that even people who has a mental
illness can also be successful in their life.
