PHYSICS ASSIGNMENT

ASSIGNMENT1 # MAGNETIC EFFECTS OF CURRENT

1. In a galvanometer there is a deflection of 10 divisions per mA. The internal

resistance of the galvanometer is 60 . If a shunt of 2.5 is connected to the
galvanometer and there are 50 divisions in all, on the scale of galvanometer, what
maximum current can this galvanometer read?
2. The deflection produced in a galvanometer is reduced to 45 divisions from 55
when a shunt of 8 is used. Calculate the resistance of the galvanometer.
3. A voltmeter reads 5.0 V at full scale deflection and is graded according to its
resistance per volt at full scale deflection as 5000 V -1. How will you convert it
into a voltmeter that reads 20 V at full scale deflection? Will it still be graded as
5000 V-1? Will you prefer this voltmeter to one that is
graded as 2000 V-1?
4. A voltmeter V of resistance 400 is used to measure the
potential difference across a 100 resistor in the circuit
shown in figure.
(i) What will be the reading on the voltmeter?
(ii) Calculate the potential difference across 100 resistor
before the voltmeter is connected?
5. A galvanometer has a resistance of 96 and it is desired to pass 4% of the total
current through it. Calculate the value of shunt resistance.
6. A galvanometer has a resistance of 50 . A resistance of 5 is connected across
its terminals. What part of the total current will follow through the galvanometer?
7. A galvanometer has a resistance of 30 and a current of 2 mA is needed to give
full scale deflection. What is the resistance needed and how is it to be connected
to convert the galvanometer (i) into an ammeter of 0.3 A range and (ii) into a
voltmeter of 0.2 V range?
8. A resistance of 900 is connected in series with a galvanometer of resistance 100
. A potential difference of 1 V produces a deflection of 100 divisions in the
galvanometer. Find the figure of merit of the galvanometer.
9. A galvanometer gives a full scale deflection with a current of 1 A. It is connected
into ammeter of range 10 A. Find the ratio of the resistance of the ammeter to the
resistance of the shunt used.
10.Two resistance coils of 100 and 200 respectively are connected in series
across 100 V. A moving coil voltmeter of 200 is connected in turn across each
coil. What will it read in each case?
11.Which one of the following will experience maximum force, when projected with
the same velocity v perpendicular to the magnetic field: (i) -particle, and (ii) -
particle?
12.Two protons P and Q moving with the same speed enter magnetic fields B 1 and B2
respectively at right angles to the field directions. If B 2 is greater than B1, for which
of the protons P and Q, the circular path in the magnetic field will have a smaller
radius?

PHYSICS ASSIGNMENT

13.A proton and an alpha particles of the same velocity enter in turn a region of
uniform magnetic field, acting perpendicular to their direction of motion. Deduce
the ratio of the radii of the circular paths described by the particles.
14.An electron and a proton are moving along the same direction with the same
kinetic energy. When they pass through a uniform magnetic field, perpendicular to
the direction of their motion, they describe paths of the same radius. Is this
statement true or false?
15.Two identical circular wires P and Q each of radius R and carrying
current I are kept in perpendicular planes such that they have a
common centre as shown in figure. Find the magnitude and direction
of the net magnetic field at the common centre of the two coils.
