Lesson Title: multiply a fraction by a whole number

Grade Level: 4th

Subject: Math
Description of Learning Goals, Standards, Objectives
CC/GPSs: MGSE4.NF.4 understandings of multiplication to multiply a fraction by
a whole number e.g., by using a visual such as a number line or area
model.
- A learner will understand a fraction a/b as a multiple of 1/b. For
example, use a visual fraction model to represent 5/4 as the
product 5 (1/4), recording the conclusion by the equation 5/4
= 5 (1/4).
- A learner will understand a multiple of a/b as a multiple of 1/b,
and use this understanding to multiply a fraction by a whole
number. For example, use a visual fraction model to express 3
(2/5) as 6 (1/5), recognizing this product as 6/5. (In general,
n (a/b) = (n a)/b.)
- A learner will able to solve word problems involving
multiplication of a fraction by a whole number, e.g., by using
visual fraction models and equations to represent the problem.
For example, if each person at a party will eat 3/8 of a pound of
roast beef, and there will be 5 people at the party, how many
pounds of roast beef will be needed? Between what two whole
numbers does your answer lie?

Standards: tasks- problems to practice and interact with the skills. Students can
watch the video lecture anytime and anywhere. Khan Academy has best
tool, motivator and model for all level.

Long-Term Learning By the end of this unit, a learner will able to multiply a fraction by a
Goal or Outcome: whole number and able to represent fractions using various
multiplication equations.

A learner also able to solve word problems involving multiplication of

fractions by a whole number.
ABCD Objectives or Given multiplying whole number by friction number ,limited with
Outcomes: denominators 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, and 100 , my 4th-grade students
should able to multiply a fraction by a whole number with 80% accuracy.

Giving word problems involving multiplication of a fraction by a whole

number, my 4th grade students should able understand the problem and
able to know between what two whole numbers the answer (the friction
number) lies with 80% accuracy.
Description of Assessment
Assessment Plan: At the end of this topic, students will work on the practice questions on
Khan Academy App.

Description of Activities with Technology and Materials

Activity Design: A learner will create personal pie/pizza chart
using paper, scissor and crayons. (Hands-on
method), and will use it to learn wholes and
parts.
Class starter and lesson connection: We start the class by watching Khan Academy
explanation on the topic. After we get some
understanding, we will discuss the topic in the
class and do some exercises. For lesson
connection, students will be asked to give an
example to show how they can use fractions in
real life.

In a small group, we pretend as it is someones

Teacher and student activities: birthday. We draw a big circle in a board. By
cutting different color papers and use them for
cake slices, students can play and learn
fractions.
We will create a poster to track student progress.
Each week we highlight students name who earn
the most energy points and students who master
the most skills. The poster serves as motivation
for all students, since every student can see
themselves reach the top each week, and top-
performing students are motivated by the all-time
list.

Technology Connection: Khan Academy App

Students will practice fraction questions on
Mathgames.com until they master it. It is fun way
of learning math. They do math games
individually with my assistance.

Materials and Resources:

Students use Khan Academy App for topic
introduction and easy explanation.
Students use Mathgames.com after the class
discussed and class works to make sure
students comfortably know the topic. Students
should able to do well alone as a homework.

Students will use textbook, iPod or other tablets.

Reflection on Lesson Design

Future Actions : I will post class lectures online so that students
can review what we do in the class whenever
they want.
I will do more research to locate a valuable
website, software and other resources for my
students to use in addition to textbook and my
lecture.

Technology is necessary. Without a computer, a

student can miss a lot of work and quizzes. As an
educator, I will find ways for student do get
access when needed.
