Reading and answering questions.
Lesson Content Description:
Students are placed into reading groups based on their ability. Each
group will be reading a book at their level. The teacher will review
words if necessary with students. T. will read the book with
students. T. will then ask students comprehension questions.

Instructional Strategies/Method of Delivery:


Front loading vocabulary
Reading the book with students, each student gets a turn
Asking each student comprehension questions
Common Core Standard:

Ask and answer questions about key details in a text.
ELD Standard:
6. Reading/viewing closely
Describe ideas, phenomena (e.g., plant life cycle), and text elements (e.g., characters) based on
understanding of a select set of grade-level texts and viewing of multimedia, with substantial
support.
Common Core Lesson Objective:
Students will read nonfiction books in small groups with teacher and will be able to effectively
answer comprehension questions related to their book.
Assessment:
Formative: T. will see whether students are understanding the book, as they read along by
pausing to talk about what is being read.
Summative: T. will ask students comprehension questions regarding details from the book.
Lesson/Assessment Modifications: ELL: Special Needs
Special Needs: Student will be provided with additional time to read and to answer questions.
EL: Student will be allowed to point to visuals or words to help with answering the questions.
Technology: Describe the types of technology you will be utilizing in your lesson to create
and enhance instruction. If no technology is used, please explain why.
There will be no technology used because this activity is small group based. We are reading as a
group, then answering questions. We will have our books to refer to and students will be able to
see my modeling.

LESSON PRESENTATION

INTO
Step-by-Step Anticipatory Set/Orientation
T. will call students over to the kidney table, one group at a time.
T. will explain that we will be reading nonfiction books.
T. will ask students if anyone knows what an informational or nonfiction book is?

Group 4
Lower performing students- Apples

Group 2,3,5
At grade level students- From Pit to Plum

Group 1
High performing students- The Story of a Rose

THROUGH
Step-by-Step Modeling/Presentation of the Objective
For the group with the lower performing students, teacher will write vocabulary words on a
white board and review words with students.

Step-by-Step Guided/Structured Practice of the Objective: Gradual Release of


Instruction
T. will ask students what the title of the book is.
T. will have each student take a turn reading a page aloud, while everyone follows along.

Checking for Understanding/Formative Assessment of Each Students Performance/

T. will pause periodically to discuss what is going on in the book.

T. will ask each group comprehension questions regarding the book. Students will either write
or say their answer aloud.

Adaptation for EL- Student will be able to point to the appropriate word or picture in the
book.
