Vitamin D
Levels for
Pregnancy
& Lactation

Getting the right nutrients and
eating well when youre pregnant or
breastfeeding is important for your
babys growth and development.
Vitamin D helps you to develop
strong and healthy bones and it does
the same for your developing baby.
If you dont get enough vitamin D
when youre pregnant, your babys
bones can become soft. This means
that they are more likely to break,

and your baby is also more likely
to develop a bone condition called
rickets. Getting enough vitamin D
when youre pregnant helps your
baby get enough vitamin D too, and
also increases your chances of having
an uncomplicated pregnancy.
Breastfeeding enhances bonding
with your baby, but it also provides
your baby with the nutrients that he
or she needs to grow and develop,

including most vitamins and minerals.
The foods you eat are important, as
the nutrients pass from you to your
baby in your breast milk.
Depending on how much vitamin D
youre getting as the breastfeeding
mother, your breast milk may or may
not provide vitamin D for your baby.
If youre not getting enough vitamin
D yourself, then its very important
to give your baby a vitamin D
supplement.
Many women in the United States
dont get enough vitamin D when
they are pregnant. You may be more
likely to be deficient in vitamin D if
you are obese (overweight), spend
a lot of time indoors or are covered
up when youre in the sun, or if you
have dark skin. How much vitamin
D you need when youre pregnant
is a complicated subject. Not all
organizations recommend the same
amount of supplement each day.
Here are current recommendations
for pregnant women from US
organizations:
Vitamin D Council 4,000-6,000 IU/day
Endocrine Society 1,500-2,000 IU/day
Food & Nutrition Board 600 IU/day
In two recent studies from the
University of South Carolina, a group
of researchers found that pregnant
women need to take at least 4,000
IU of vitamin D everyday to make
sure that their newborn child has
enough when he or she is born.
The researchers also found that
women who took 4,000 IU everyday
during pregnancy were more likely
to have an uncomplicated birth.
Whereas women taking less vitamin
D than this were more likely to have a
baby born early (before the due date)
or to develop gestational diabetes,
preeclampsia, or infections. Women
taking less vitamin D were also more
likely to have a c-section. This research
is the reason why the Vitamin D
Council recommends taking 4,000
IU to 6,000 IU of vitamin D every day
if youre pregnant. This will ensure
that youre getting enough vitamin
D, and getting enough vitamin D to
your unborn child.

more complicated! The question is
whether you should give your baby
a vitamin D supplement or whether,
if youre getting enough vitamin D,
your baby can get the vitamin D he
or she needs from your breast milk.
You can do either, but its important
to make sure that youre getting the
right amount of vitamin D, or if youre
giving your baby vitamin D, that he or
she is getting enough.
Not all organizations recommend
the same amount of supplement for
babies each day. Here is a list of the
current US recommendations:

A seed library is a place where
community members can get
seeds for free (or sometimes
for a nominal fee). Many seed
libraries are run for public
benefit, to encourage families to
garden and grow some of their
own food. Seed libraries located
at select county public libraries
continue to gain momentum, said

the SLO County Library has
opened a new seed library at
Santa Margarita Branch Library.
Based on community input, the
Santa Margarita seed library

Arroyo Grande, Los Osos, and
Nipomo, continue to carry seeds
for a variety of vegetables, herbs,
and flowers sustainable in our
region. The library continues to
partner with SLO Seed Exchange

1967 Summer Story

It is the summer of 1967. Im
Gus and my best friend is Benny,
and we are on a mission to
do something incredible. Our
little town of San Luis Obispo
is not a big city (about 25,000
in population), but it is really
groovy. Benny and I like spending
time downtown, especially in
the summer time. Yesterday,
we were walking by the Fremont
Theater (1035 Monterey St) and
we were checking out posters of
the upcoming movies.
There was one movie called Cool
Hand Luke starring a guy named
Paul Newman. Bennys mom
loves this guy and says hes the
most handsome man in the world.
There was also a new Disney
movie called Jungle Book playing
today. My favorite movie poster
had some really boss motorcycles
called choppers. They had extra
long front forks and cool paint
jobs. After seeing those pictures,
I knew that I had to turn my
Schwinn Sting Ray bike with a
banana seat into a chopper!
Benny knocked at my front door
at 8:00 in the morning so we
could start our adventure early.

It nearly causes one to want to
