2. ACADEMICPROGRAMS

ThroughJEE(Advanced),IITsofferadmissionintoundergraduatecoursesleading
to a Bachelors, Integrated Masters or BachelorMaster Dual Degree in
Engineering, Sciences, Architecture, or Pharmaceutics. Both Bachelors and
Mastersdegreesareawardedtocandidatesenrolledinthedualdegreeprograms
uponsuccessfulcompletionofthecoursecurriculum.InafewoftheIITs,students
enrolledintothe4yearBachelorsprogramhavetheoptiontoconverttoB.Tech.
(Honors)and/orB.Tech.withMinors.Thetypesofacademicprogramsofferedat
IITsandtheirminimumdurationaregiveninthenextpage.

However, not all programs and courses are available in all the institutes. The
relevant programs and courses offered in 2016 are given in AnnexureIII:
COURSES OFFERED IN 2016. The programs that will be offered in 2017 will be
announcedatthetimeofseatallocation(i.e.,fillinginofchoicesforadmission).

The programs are creditbased and thus offer the flexibility to progress at ones
ownpace.Aminimumlevelofperformanceisessentialforsatisfactoryprogress.
ThemediumofinstructionisEnglish.

AllIndiannationalswhosatisfytheeligibilitycriteria(seeSection10)canappearin
JEE (Advanced). The successful candidates meeting the Class XII performance
criterion(seeSection25)areeligibleforadmissionintoIITs.Whileallottingseats,
certain policies are followed depending on candidates category and/or
nationality.

3. RESERVATIONOFSEATS

Indian nationals belonging to certain categories are admitted under the seats
reserved for them in accordance with the rules of the Government of India. The
categoriesandtheextentofreservationareasfollows:

OtherBackwardClassesbelongingtotheNonCreamyLayer(OBCNCL)27%of
seats in every course. The backward class should be in the current updated
centrallistofOBCs(www.ncbc.nic.in).

Candidates belonging to the creamy layer of OBC are NOT entitled for
reservation.Suchcandidatesaretreatedasbelongingtothegeneral(GEN),i.e.
unreservedcategory,andtheywillbeeligibleonlyfortheOPENseatstheseats
forwhicheveryoneiseligible.

ScheduledCaste(SC)15%ofseatsineverycourse.

ScheduledTribe(ST)7.5%ofseatsineverycourse.

Thebenefitofreservationwillbegivenonlytothosecastesandtribesthatare
mentionedintherespectivecentrallistofcorrespondingstatespublishedbythe
GovernmentofIndia(http://socialjustice.nic.inandhttp://tribal.nic.in).

Persons with Disability (PwD) 3% seats in each of OPEN, OBCNCL, SC and ST


categoryseats.

Benefitwouldbegiventothosewhohaveatleast40%impairmentirrespective
ofthetypeofdisabilityi.e.,locomotor,visualorSEVEREdyslexic.

Leprosycured candidates who are otherwise fit to pursue the courses are also
includedinthissubcategory.

CandidatesbelongingtotheOBCNCL,SC,STandPwDcategorieswillbedeclared
asqualifiedonthebasisofarelaxedcriterion(see21.RANKLISTS).

Unfilled seats reserved under OBCNCL category will be dereserved to OPEN


categoryseats.However,seatsremainingvacantundertheSCandSTcategories
shallNOTbedereservedtoanycategory.ThereservationforPwDcandidatesis
horizontal and hence, unfilled seats will be dereserved to the respective
categories i.e., unfilled SCPwD seats will be converted to the SC category seats
andsoon.

The category of a candidate as entered in the database, which will be made


available by the JEE Apex Board [which conducts JEE (Main) 2017 examination],
willbefinalandrequestsforchangeofcategorywillNOTbeentertained.

4. DEFENCESERVICECANDIDATES

DefenceService(DS)candidatesarechildrenofdefence/paramilitarypersonnel
killedorpermanentlydisabledinactionduringwarorpeacetimeoperations.Two
seats are available for preferential allotment in each Institute for DS candidates.
Toavailthispreferentialallotment,aDScandidatemustbeintheCommonRank
ListofJEE(Advanced)2017(see21.RANKLISTS).

5. FOREIGNNATIONALS

CandidateswhoareNOTcitizensofIndia(bybirthornaturalized),donotbelong
toPIO/OCIcategory,andwhoseparentsarenotcitizensofIndiaanddonotcome
under PIO/OCI category at the time of registering for JEE (Advanced) 2017 are
treatedasforeignnationals.Seatsallottedtoforeignnationalsaresupernumerary
with a cap of 10% of total number of seats in every course. However, the seats
allotted to PIO/OCI card holders will be under OPEN category, but not
supernumerary.

7. THEEXAMINATION

The Joint Entrance Examination (Advanced) 2017 [JEE (Advanced) 2017] will be
conducted by the seven Zonal Coordinating (ZC) IITs under the guidance of the
Joint Admission Board (JAB) 2017. The performance of a candidate in this
examination will form the basis for admission to the Bachelors, Integrated
Masters and Dual Degree programs (entry at the 10+2 level) in all the IITs. The
decisionsoftheJAB2017willbefinalinallmattersrelatedtoJEE(Advanced)2017
andadmissiontoIITs.

8. SCHEDULEOFJEE(ADVANCED)2017

The examination consists of two papers (Paper 1 and Paper 2) of three hour
durationeach.Boththepapersarecompulsory.Theexaminationwillbeheldas
perthefollowingschedule:

It may be noted that the schedule will remain the same even if 21 May 2017 is
declaredapublicholiday.

18:00ISTforPaper2.

9. JEE(MAIN)2017

Indian nationals (including PIO/OCI) who wish to appear in JEE (Advanced) 2017
must write Paper1 of JEE (Main) 2017 which will be held in the month of April
2017. Further information about JEE (Main) 2017 may be obtained from the
websitewww.jeemain.nic.in.

10. ELIGIBILITYCRITERIAFORINDIANNATIONALS(includingPIO/OCI)FOR
APPEARINGINJEE(ADVANCED)2017

All thecandidates mustfulfileachandeveryoneofthe following fivecriteriato


appearinJEE(Advanced)2017.

Criterion1PerformanceinJEE(Main)2017:Candidatesshouldbeamongthetop
2,20,000 (including all categories) by scoring positive marks in Paper1 of JEE
(Main)2017.

Thepercentagesofvariouscategoriesare:27%forOBCNCL,15%forSC,7.5%for
STandtheremaining50.5%isOPENforall.Withineachofthesefourcategories,
3%horizontalreservationisavailableforPwD(includingDyslexic)candidates.

As shown in the following table, the usual order will be followed while choosing
top2,20,000candidatesinvariouscategorieswhohave scored positivemarksin
JEE(Main)2017.

Criterion2Agelimit:CandidatesshouldhavebeenbornonorafterOctober1,
1992. Five years relaxation is given to SC, ST and PwD candidates, i.e., these
candidatesshouldhavebeenbornonorafterOctober1,1987.

Criterion 3 Number of attempts: A candidate can attempt JEE (Advanced) a


maximumoftwotimesinconsecutiveyears.Therefore,candidateswhoappeared
inJEE(Advanced)2016forthefirsttimearealsoeligible.

Criterion 4 Appearance in Class XII (or equivalent) examination: A candidate


should have appeared for the Class XII (or equivalent) examination for the first
timeineither2016or2017.However,candidateswhoseClassXII(orequivalent)
examinationBoardresultsfortheacademicyear201415weredeclaredafterJune
2015areeligibletoappearinJEE(Advanced)2017.

Criterion5EarlieradmissionatIITs:AcandidateshouldNOThavebeenadmitted
in an IIT irrespective of whether or not he/she continued in the program) OR

acceptedtheIITseatbyreportingatareportingcentreinthepast.Thecandidates
whose admission at IITs was cancelled are also NOT eligible to appear in JEE
(Advanced)2017.

CandidateswhohavebeenadmittedtoapreparatorycourseinanyoftheIITsfor
thefirsttimein2016canappearinJEE(Advanced)2017.Thecandidateswhohave
paid seat acceptance fee but not accepted the seat (by not reporting at any
reportingcentreduringjointseatallocationin2016)areeligibletoappearinJEE
(Advanced)2017.

However, in both these cases, the candidate is required to fulfill the conditions
mentionedfromcriterion1tocriterion4.

11. REGISTRATIONFORJEE(ADVANCED)2017

Eligibility: The candidate should satisfy each and every one of the five eligibility
criteria [see 10. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR APPEARING IN JEE (ADVANCED)
2017]. Registration will be cancelled if, at a later date, it is found that the
candidatedoesnotmeetanyofthesefiveeligibilitycriteria.

RegistrationProcedure:Theprocedureconsistsofthreebasicsteps.

Step1:Afterlogin,providethebasicdataincludingthechoiceofthelanguage
of question paper (English or Hindi), the choices of the cities for the
examination [See 18. CITIES AND TOWNS WHERE JEE (ADVANCED) 2017
WILL BE HELD]. The candidate will have the option of adding another cell
phone number on top of the number/s provided during JEE (Main)
registration.PleasenotethattheJEE(Advanced)2017resultwillbesentto
oneofthesenumbersbySMS.

Step2: Upload the scanned copies of all requisite documents [See 14.
DOCUMENTSREQUIREDFORREGISTRATION].

Step3:Payregistrationfee[See12.REGISTRATIONFEEFORJEE(ADVANCED)

13. SERVICESOFASCRIBE

The services of a scribe (amanuensis) are available to candidates who are


visually impaired, dyslexic, have disability in the upper limbs or have lost
fingers / hands thereby preventing them from bubbling the optical response
sheet(ORS).

To avail this benefit, the candidate should request the Chairman, JEE
(Advanced) 2017, of the respective zonal coordinating IIT in the prescribed
format (FORMSCRIBE). The requisition, along with a copy of the PwD
certificate (FORMPwD [II/III/IV, whichever is applicable]) OR a copy of the
certificate of Dyslexic candidate (FORMDYSLEXIC 1 and 2), whichever is
applicable, should be uploaded at the time of online registration for JEE
(Advanced) 2017. The formats for the request letter and PwD/Dyslexic
certificatearegiveninAnnexureII:CERTIFICATEFORMATS.

ZonalcoordinatingIITswillmakearrangements,throughthePresidingOfficer
(PO) of the Examination Center, to provide a panel of scribes (amanuenses).
ScribeswillbestudentsofClassXIfromthesciencestreamwithMathematics
asoneofthesubjects.ThePwD/dyslexiccandidatehastochooseascribefrom
thispanel.ThecandidateswillNOTbeallowedtobringtheirownscribes.

The candidate will be allowed to meet the scribe one day prior to the
examination i.e., on Saturday, 20 May 2017, in the presence of the IIT
Representatives(IRs),PresidingOfficer(PO)andanInvigilator.

If it is found that a candidate has used the services of a scribe, and


consequentlyoneextrahour,butdoesnotpossesstheextentofdisabilitythat
warrants the use of a scribe, he/she will be excluded from the process of
evaluation,rankingandadmission.Ifthecandidatehasalreadybeenadmitted,
his/heradmissionwillbecancelled.

14. DOCUMENTSREQUIREDFORREGISTRATION

Given below is a list of certificates whose scanned copies are to be uploaded at


the time of online registration for JEE (Advanced) 2017. The formats of the
certificates, which are indicated in the brackets, are given in AnnexureII:

(2)ClassXII(orequivalentexamination)certificate(forthosewhoappeared

(3)IfthenameisnotsameasintheClassXcertificate,gazettenotification
showingthechangeofname.

ForCandidatesseekingadmissionundertheOBCNCLcategory

OBCNCL certificate (FORMOBCNCL) should have been issued on or after


April1,2017inconfirmationwiththelatestguidelinesoftheGovernment
ofIndia.IfthecandidatefailstocollecttheOBCNCLcertificate(issuedafter
April 1, 2017) before online registration, he/she may upload a declaration
(Declaration in Lieu of OBCNCL Certificate) to that effect. Visit
www.ncbc.nic.in for latest guidelines and updates of the Central List of
StatewiseOBCs.

A copy of the downloaded admit card should be produced at the time of


examination.Theoriginaladmitcardwillbeissuedtothecandidateduringthe
Paper 1 examination. This original admit card must be retained safely till all
theformalitiesofadmissionarecomplete.

16. QUESTIONPAPERS

There are two question papers: Paper 1 and Paper 2 of three hours duration
each.Bothpapersarecompulsory.

Each question paper will consist of three separate sections, viz., Physics,
ChemistryandMathematics.ThesyllabiaregiveninAnnexureI:SYLLABI.

The question papers will consist of objective type (multiple choice and
numerical answer type) questions designed to test comprehension, reasoning
andanalyticalabilityofcandidates.

Negative marks will be awarded for incorrect answers to some of the


questions.

The candidates must carefully read and adhere to the detailed instructions
giveninthequestionpaper.

ThequestionpaperwillbeineitherEnglishorHindi.Candidatesmustexercise
the choice of question paper language while registering for JEE (Advanced)
2017. Change of question paper language will NOT be entertained after the
registration.

TheanswersheetofeachpaperofJEE(Advanced)2017isamachinereadable
ORS.

The ORS has two pages with the same layout. The first page of the ORS is
machinereadable.Itisdesignedsoastoleaveimpressionsoftheresponseson
thesecondpage.

Candidates should not separate or disturb the alignment of the two pages of
theORSatanystageandunderanycircumstance.

TheanswerstoallthequestionsshouldbemarkedonthefirstpageoftheORS
bydarkeningtheappropriatebubbleorbubbles(aspertheinstructionsgiven
inthequestionpaper).

CandidatesshoulduseBLACKBALLPOINTpenfordarkeningthebubbles.

Candidatesshouldapplyadequatepressuretoensurethataproperimpression
is made on the second page of the ORS. Other instructions for darkening the
bubbles will be printed on the question paper and candidates must strictly
adheretotheseinstructions.

The second page of the ORS will be handed over to the candidates by the

19. IMPORTANTINSTRUCTIONS

Candidatesmustcarryaprintedcopyofthedownloadedadmitcardandtheir
originalphotoidentitycardfortheexamination.Onlycandidateshavingavalid
admit card will be allowed to write the examination. The candidates will be
given the original admit cards upon identity verification during the
examination.

The candidates identity will be verified by invigilators as well as IIT


representatives.Iftheidentityofthecandidateisindoubt,thecandidatemay
notbeallowedtoappearintheexamination.However,theauthoritiesattheir
discretionmayprovisionallypermitthecandidatetoappearintheexamination
after completing certain formalities. No extra time will be allowed for
completing the examination in lieu of the time taken for completing these
formalities.

Impersonation in the examination is a serious offence and will lead to


disqualificationofthecandidatefromJEE(Advanced)2017.

Only BLACK ball point pens, pencils, downloaded admit card and an original
photo identity card are allowed to be taken inside the examination hall.
Candidates will NOT be allowed to carry any electronic devices (e.g. mobile
phones, smart phones, calculators, iPAD, tabs, digital watches etc.), abacus,
slide rule, log books, study material of any type, geometry box, written or
white (blank) paper/piece of paper, wallets, etc. to the examination hall.
Candidates should not wear items containing metals such as rings, bracelet,
earrings,pendantsorclothswithbigbuttons.

Candidatesmustreporttotheexaminationcentreswellinadvance.Candidates
arrivingaftercommencementoftheexaminationineachpaper(09:00ISTfor

25. PERFORMANCEINCLASSXII(OREQUIVALENT)BOARDEXAMINATION

The candidates should satisfy at least one of the following two criteria for
admissiontoIITs:

(1) Must have secured at least 75% aggregate marks in the Class XII (or
equivalent) Board examination. The aggregate marks for SC, ST and PwD
candidatesshouldbeatleast65%.

(2)Mustbewithinthecategorywisetop20percentileofsuccessfulcandidates
intheirrespectiveClassXII(orequivalent)boardexamination.

The percentile calculation will be done for the required subjects in a single
academicyearonly.

The marks scored in the following five subjects will be considered for
calculatingtheaggregatemarksandthecutoffmarksforfulfillingthetop20
percentilecriterion.

i. Physics
ii. Chemistry
iii. Mathematics
iv. A language (if the candidate has taken more than one language, then the
languagewiththehighermarkswillbeconsidered)
v. Anysubjectotherthantheabovefour(thesubjectwiththehighestmarks
willbeconsidered).

For calculation of the total marks for five subjects, if the marks awarded in a
subjectisNOToutof100,thenthemarkswillbescaled(upordown)to100so
thatthetotalaggregatemarksisoutof500.

If a Board awards only letter grades without providing an equivalent


percentage of marks on the grade sheet, the candidate should obtain a
certificatefromtheBoardspecifyingtheequivalentmarksandsubmititatthe
time of acceptance of the allocated seat. In case such a certificate is not
provided, the decision taken by the Joint Implementation Committee of JEE
(Advanced)2017willbefinal.

IncaseanyofthesubjectsPhysics,Chemistry,MathematicsandLanguageare
not evaluated in the final year (e.g., in a 3year diploma course), then the
marksforthesamesubjectfromthepreviousyear/swillbeusedforcalculating
percentageofaggregatemarks.

ForcandidateswhoappearedintheClassXII(orequivalent)Boardexamination
in 2016 but reappeared in 2017, the best of the two performances will be
considered.

If a Board gives aggregate marks considering both Class XI and Class XII
examinations(inthe10+2system),thenonlyClassXIImarkswillbeconsidered.
IfaBoardgivesaggregatemarksconsideringtheresultsofallthreeyearsofa
3yeardiplomaorcoursesofequivalentduration,thenonlythemarksscored
in the final year will be considered. Similarly, for Boards which follow a
semester system, the marks scored in the final two semesters will be
considered.

IfaBoarddoesnotgivemarksscoredinindividualsubjectsbutgivesonlythe
aggregate marks, then the aggregate marks given by the Board will be
consideredassuch.

25.1. Regardingthecutoffmarksforthetop20percentile

Thecategorywisecutoffmarksforthetop20percentilearecalculatedbased
on the marks scored by all the successful candidates in their respective
boardsintheparticularyear.

ThecutoffmarksforPwDcandidateswillbethesameasthelowestofthecut
offmarksforGEN,OBCNCL,SCandSTcategories.

Itisreiteratedthattop20percentilecutofffortheacademicyear2017willbe
considered for the candidates who pass the Class XII (or equivalent)
examinationin2017.

Similarly, top 20 percentile cutoff for the academic year 2016 will be
considered for the candidates who pass the Class XII (or equivalent)
examinationin2016.

IfacandidatepassesClassXIIin2016butwritesoneorafewsubjectsin2017
forimprovementoranyotherreason,thentop20percentilecutofffor2016
willbeconsidered.However,ifacandidatewritesallthesubjectsin2017,the
bestofthetwoperformanceswillbeconsidered.

IncaseaBoarddoesnotprovideinformationaboutthecutoffforthetop20
percentile,thecandidatewillhavetoproduceacertificatefromtherespective
Board stating that he/she falls within the top 20 percentile of successful
candidates.Ifthecandidatefailstodoso,thenthecutoffmarksfortheCBSE
willbeused.

25.2. Regardingtheaggregatemarksof75%(or65%forSC,STandPwD)

Themarksscoredinthe2017ClassXII(orequivalent)Boardexaminationwill
beconsideredforcandidateswhopasstheClassXIIexaminationin2017.

The marks scored by a candidate in the 2016 Class XII (or equivalent) Board
examination will be considered for candidates who pass the Class XII
examinationin2016.

If a candidate passes Class XII (or equivalent) in 2016, but writes any of the
required subjects (mentioned above) in 2017 for improvement or any other
reason, then the aggregate percentage will be calculated by considering the
maximummarksobtainedintherequiredsubjects.

26. JOINTSEATALLOCATION

The seats across IITs, NITs, IIITs and other Govt. Funded Technical Institutes
(GFTIs)willbeallocatedbytheJointSeatAllocationAuthority(JoSAA).

Allthecandidateswhoareeligibleforadmissionwillhavetoparticipateinthe
joint seat allocation process by filling in their choices of the courses. The
detailedinstructionsforfillinginthechoicesandtheseatallotmentprocedure
willbemadeavailablebyJoSAAthroughSeatAllotmentBrochure.

ThescheduleofthejointseatallocationwillbeannouncedseparatelybyJoSAA
2017.

The list of courses that will be offered by the IITs for admission for the
academicyear201718willbemadeavailableatthetimeofonlinefillinginof
choices.

27. PREPARATORYCOURSES

ThevacantseatsreservedforSC,STandPwDcandidateswillbeallottedtothe
candidatesofrespectivecategoriesforadmissiontoapreparatorycourseof1
yeardurationonthebasisofrelaxedadmissioncriteria(see21.RANKLISTS).

Admissionisgiventothecandidatesinthepreparatorycourseprovided(i)the
seats reserved for the respective category are vacant, (ii) candidates satisfy
minimum norms, and (iii) candidates have not accepted a seat in the

AlltheIITswillrunpreparatorycoursesofoneyeardurationforSC,STandPwD
candidates intended to prepare them to pursue the academic program (for
session201718)towhichtheyhavebeenallocated.Attheendofthiscourse,
candidatesaredeclaredaspassorfail.

On successful completion of the course, the candidates will be offered direct


admission in July 2018 (Academic Year 201819) to the already allotted
undergraduatecourse.

Candidates admitted to the preparatory course are also eligible to appear in


JEE(Advanced)2018subjecttofulfillingothereligibilitycriteria.

28. ADDITIONALREQUIREMENTSFORCERTAINCOURSES

Those who opt for Mining Engineering, Mining Machinery Engineering,


IntegratedM.Sc.programinGeologyorGeophysics,orPetroleumEngineering
shouldnothaveanyformofcolourblindness.Acertificatetothiseffectfroma
govt. registered medical practitioner has to be produced at the time of seat
acceptance. IITs may constitute a medical board to test the validity of the
candidatesmedicalcondition.

Thestandardsofvisualacuitywithorwithoutglasseswillbeadheredtostrictly
forcandidatesseekingadmissiontoMiningEngineeringasperDGMSCircular
14 of 1972. Persons with oneeyed vision are not permitted to work

underground. Candidates with these limitations are not allowed to opt for
admissiontoMiningEngineeringandMiningMachineryEngineering.

29. GENDERRESTRICTIONFORMININGENGINEERINGPROFESSION

Section46(1)oftheMinesAct,1952statesthat

No woman shall, notwithstanding anything contained in any other law, be


employed
(a) in any part of a mine which is below ground,
(b) in any mine above ground except between 6:00 and 19:00 hrs.
However, female candidates will be admitted to Mining Engineering or Mining
MachineryEngineeringrelatedcoursesatIIT(ISM),IITKharagpurandIIT(BHU).

The relevant courses offered by IITs in the academic year 201617 are given in
AnnexureIII.Someofthecourseshaveadditionalrequirementsandtheseare
marked as AR. The courses to be offered by the various Institutes in 2017 may
vary. A few of the courses offered in 2016 may not be offered at all or may be
modified(coursetitleand/orcontent).Itisalsopossiblethatafewnewcourses
willbeoffered.Theadditionalrequirementsmayalsochange.Thefinallistwillbe
madeavailableatthetimeoffillinginofthechoicesforseatallocation.

31. Grievances

AllstagesofJEE(Adv)2017willbeconductedwithtransparency.Shouldtherebe
anygrievancerelatingtoJEE(Adv)2017,thecandidatecanwritetotheChairman
