Queen Elizabeth I is surely one of England's greatest monarchs, because her reign gave

England some sense of stability and a considerable sense of national and religious triumph after
the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588. All the energy and confidence born in this period
found expression in literature. The Elizabethan age saw the flowering of poetry (the sonnet,
the Spenserian stanza, dramatic blank verse), was a golden age of drama (especially for the plays
of Shakespeare), and inspired a wide variety of splendid prose (from historical chronicles,
versions of the Holy Scriptures, pamphlets, and literary criticism to the first English novels).
Queen Elizabeth heavily patronized the theater. Many of the great plays written during her reign
were created to be performed specifically for her. Of her influence and patronage, the theater,

entertainment. Playwrights William Shakespeare, Christopher Marlowe, and Ben Jonson all
