2015 JDS Special Program

Environmental Policy & Practice

Japanese Grant Aid for Human Resource Development Scholarship

Our Educational Tradition
Masters Program
in Environmental Sciences
When JDS Fellows join our Environmental Sciences program, they become part of Japans oldest graduate
program in environmental studies, the history of which has spanned more than 35 years. This Program
has developed multidisciplinary curricula and wide-ranging international/domestic internships. Our
proud tradition continues with our unbroken commitment to scholarly innovation, openness, international
cooperation, and social responsibility.

JDS Special Tailor-made Program

Our Educational activities for the JDS special program focus on four activities

Annual International Seminars

Our educational activities for the JDS special program focuses on four major areas
Annual international seminars invite distinguished speakers from universities or
research institutions in Japan and other countries. JDS Fellows not only listen
to the lectures of these guests but also present their research topics in order to
receive advice from the guests. These seminars seek to improve each Fellows
research. It also assists in expanding Fellows academic networks beyond
Japan.
International Seminar
International Seminar Overseas Research & Seminars
JDS Fellows have the opportunity to travel to the country/region of their thesis
research with at least one of our faculty members so that they learn how to
undertake research and survey for data collection.

Field Trips in Japan

JDS Fellows join field trips in Japan that are specially designed to match Fellows
research interests. In the past, we have taken JDS Fellows to places where they
Field Trip in Ashio could observe and examine issues that are related to waste treatment, recycling
Field Trip in technology and policies, forest conservation, protected area policies, rural
development, urban planning, biodiversity and satoyama, traditional knowledge,
tourism, environmental disaster prevention, public works, pollution, climate
change, and energy problems, among others.

Learning Environment
The Masters Program in Environmental Sciences has managed web pages that
are specifically designed for JDS Fellows. Also, in 2012 the Program enhanced
International Seminar in Vietnam
its on-line teaching capacity. By having access to these websites, JDS and other
Seminar in Vietnam students can receive course information, reading materials and important news
about courses. Campus-wide on-line course registration is also available in
English. In April 2014, a new student lounge opened for all graduate students in
the Program, in a building with enhanced earthquake resistance.

nce admitted, JDS Fellows have the opportunity to register for the SUSTEP (Sustainability Science,
Technology, and Policy) certificate program. The SUSTEP Program aims to foster global leaders,
who are highly trained in science/technology, humanity/social sciences, and diplomacy/leadership.
This program is managed under the Masters Program in Environmental Sciences and offers a unique
set of expert training courses. It is designed for educating both Japanese and international students.
The SUSTEP Program has four major fields to choose from. SUSTEP certificates will be given to those
students who acquire more than 8 credits from SUSTEP designated courses, and submit a masters thesis
in English that is related to a SUSTEP concept.

SUSTEP Certificate Program

Fostering Future Global Environmental Leaders
Water Environment & Disaster Management
This major fosters experts in conservation and restoration of the water environment as well as the
maintenance or restoration of secure infrastructure against climate change challenges. Students can acquire
advanced scientific and technological knowledge about the watershed environment through courses on field
surveys, disaster analysis, theory, and numerical simulations.
Biodiversity Conservation
This major provides courses on the basic mechanisms of ecosystems, soil science, microbiology, and
analytical chemistry. These courses help refine analytical skills that may lead to innovative measures for
mitigating complicated environmental problems.

Waste
This major offers advanced knowledge about available technologies and management systems that control
and reduce waste generation. Its courses cover topics such as environmental information monitoring,
environmental remediation technologies, environmental risk management, e-waste management, and
human health risks from toxic waste.
Environmental Policy
This major identifies socio-economic and ecological factors; illustrates the mechanism of political trade-off for
conservation; proposes adaptable options; and composes planning strategies.

thesis by forming her/his own committee, consisting of one academic supervisor and two or more
sub-supervisors who help refine research topic/scope. In the middle of the second year, all students present
their research progress in the interim presentation, in which other faculty members attend and help refine
their researches. The masters theses are expected to make original/significant contributions to
environmental sciences. Some of the past theses have been published in academic journals and books.

One of three core courses in this Program aims to foster multidisciplinary and global visions by introducing
wide-ranging environmental science topics that are approached from ecology, hydrology, chemistry,
economics, ethics, policies, health, disaster prevention/mitigation/adaptation, and meteorology, among
others. Another core course is based on field and laboratory practices that are accompanied with an
in-class exercise course to enhance knowledge/skill acquisition in fields and laboratories. In addition, the
Program offers more than 70 elective courses to meet diverse academic interests among students. Our
acclaimed signature courses on international internships have offered hands-on seminars about ten
countries in Africa, Asia, Europe, and North America.
