partment has responded to two drug
overdose cases. On one of the cases,
we saw naloxone administered by the
ambulance system, we saw the ease of
administering the drug and we were
able to witness how fast the patient re-
sponded to naloxone, said Rockyford

from fentanyl-related deaths within the
Calgary region, which runs all the way
from Banff towards the eastern borders
of Wheatland County. A total of 138
deaths were within the City of Calgary
limits, meaning 11 deaths took place in
rural communities. It is unknown the
exact number of overdoses not result-
ing in death.
(Fentanyl overdoses are) not a huge,
huge problem here but we do respond
to several overdoses a month, Link
said. Our crews have done a great job
with saving many people in our com-
munity.

use is growing and it is affecting more

department is in the process of imple-

ers are currently receiving training for
naloxone and are attending lectures on
fentanyl.
The Strathmore Wheatland and Addic-
tions Team (SWAT) stated that it firmly
believes in education and prevention.
SWAT is a community focus group and
outlet used to educate community mem-
bers about addictions. In the past, they
have run a few educational programs in
Brentwood school and they hope to ex-
pand to teach more students about the
dangers of drugs, although it is diffi-
cult to get into schools and to fit into
their current program schedules, said
SWAT representative Jeff Cyr.
Although SWAT doesnt deal with pro-
grams for people with addictions, they
do have connections and the ability to
refer addicts to groups with more ad-
diction-related programs and resources.

on a more preventative note, said Cyr,
who added that the group is looking for

fold: one reason is for patient care, and
the other is for our own health and safe-
ty, he said.
As the rate of fentanyl usage and fen-
tanyl-related death increases in Alberta,
it is more important now than ever to
be vocal about the dangers of drugs.
(You) need to be scared and respect
the dangers of trying street drugs even
one time, because the one time you try
it might be your last time, said Link.
The sad thing about this is I think it
will eventually affect every family and
every household in the province. You
never know when it is going to hit, no
one is immune from it.

of ads; and photography, involving stu-
dents who take photos at events and
arranging for them to be published.
The sustainability of this project
is great. Every month [the students]
change roles which helps keep the
student engagement up, said White.
[And] it fits really well with the cur-
riculum.
Each month, every Grade 6 student is
responsible for writing one article. Stu-
dents can conduct interviews together
and write on the same topics, but they
must write their articles separately.
At the end of the month, the editors
choose which articles to publish.
I think it helps us learn writing and
to get bigger, stronger and more de-
tailed stories. We can figure out what
a newspaper is like, said student and
current Brentwood Star News editor,
Tayla McFadyen.
The program has been supported
by the Golden Hills School Division
with the newspaper program so other
GHSD schools can adapt the newspa-
per project if they so choose.
Direct outcomes to the language arts
curriculum include learning newspaper
conventions, grammar and style, what
the purpose is of different stories, per-
spective and bias in stories, collabora-
tion, using technology, and account-
ability, such as real-life consequences
for not finishing something such as
their articles.
I feel so much that sometimes the
curriculum is not linked to what they
see out in the real world. Suddenly we
are putting a genuine task in that al-
lows them to see their work out in the
real world. They are starting to feel that
they are real writers and there is an
audience who is interested in what is
going on in their world. It gives them
engagement that we cant try for as a
teacher, naturally it just happens, said
White.
As a result of the program, the Grade
6 students have developed an interest
in Strathmores community newspa-
pers, and in what is happening in the
world outside of school and their home
life.
Its been growing fast which is not
what we were expecting right away,
said White. The kids have been really
good at understanding they are a pilot
group and that we as teachers are not
the experts because this is a new thing

We held our club public speaking day on Sun-
day, Feb. 19 at the Nightingale Hall. Everyone did
a great job with their speeches and presentations
and good luck to those that are moving on to dis-
trict competition.
We would like to thank the Nightingale Hall As-
sociation for donating the use of the hall and to
those whocame to judge for us Larry Kirby, Ka-
trina Janzen, Rob Charette, Vanessa Wever, Judy
Unsworth and Karen Harris. We really appreciate it.

Fule for Thought
Ive hit the age of 56 and Im definitely on the
homestretch of teaching, but hopefully not Life!
The other night, I was looking through very old fam-
ily albums, mainly of my late parents family mem-
bers I dont even know. People seemed so serious
in old photos. So many of these relatives are very
serious and posed in very formal ways. Its a huge
contrast to now, where our phones can take photos
kids send mini story lines via snap chats, and
they record all their life experiences on selfies. It
became a gloomy experience, because Ive lost who
these people are, and its sad to think most of them
are now gone, and are nameless in our albums. Its
no surprise that I became a bit blue and melancholy.
For good or bad, when I face something really
serious, I tend to deflect that darkness with humour.
Its not that Im brave at all, I mean I havent yet
faced a major health scare, so its not courage. Its
more to do with facing death and the magnitude of
it. I guess like many of you, Im scared of that mor-
tality, and of the unknown after it. So I try to find
ways to make light of it, so it doesnt drive me crazy,
and I dont dwell on it. At this older age of mine, Im
starting to look through obituaries more, too. Maybe
Im just trying to double check my name isnt there
yet, but its a habit I want to break! I guess thats
why in one of my recent columns, I wrote about
making serious changes to my lifestyle. Im trying to
eat better, exercise more, and reduce stress. Sure, I
know youre probably thinking: what kind of stress
can a high school teacher have, when hes a time
PE teacher and he gets all that time off!
All I know, is that I am trying to make sure that I
give myself a fighting chance to live as long, and as
healthily as possible.
After all, Ive mentioned this before. My wife has
real longevity in her family, I dont, and Im five
years older! Thats why I sometimes introduce
myself as Debbies first husband! It does bug me
though, that some other old chump may wind up
with my stuff (and Deb)!
Ive also found that my pals and I are spending
way too many conversations on the size and condi-
tions of our prostates, recollections of those regular
exams, and our late night potty trips!
So please understand that while this may feel like
a darker column, Ive also done some wandering
through some humorous tombstone epitaphs. One

made the decision to do a horsemanship clinic
with Tyler Bennett, tentatively set for April 30. We
discussed 4-H on Parade; registration forms were
due and we came up with some great decorating
ideas. Registration forms were handed out for the
regional show in Red Deer.
Spring is finally here and riding lessons will be
starting up again on April 11. We will be riding at
Whispering Spirit again and the group schedules
are still to be determined.
Our next meeting is Tuesday, April 4 and hope-
fully the nice weather sticks around so everyone
can get riding since our first schooling show of the
year is Saturday, April 8 in Millarville.

with humour, but may also throw out a wee bit of
guilt! Another mans read: If Youre Reading This,
You Desperately Need A Hobby.
It does bring a smile to me, to know that this
man will bring smiles to unknown people who wan-
der by and read it! Another one that caught my eye
had a hint of sarcasm: Here Lies An Athiest All
Dressed Up And No Place To Go.
That one has sarcasm with a bit of advice thrown
in! It made me think that even if you dont believe
in God, why not? It sure couldnt hurt!
Some past celebrities have some cool epitaphs,
too. Merv Griffins (former talk show host) reads: I
Will NOT Be Right Back After This Message!
Obviously, thats a play on his TV messages before
commercials! Another celebrity who pokes fun at
his own grave is Rodney Dangerfield. His tombstone
says There Goes The Neighborhood!
The tombstone for Mel Blanc (the voice for many
cartoon characters like Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck,
and Porky Pig), merely says: Thats All Folks!
Even some dog owners had a lighter approach to
a lost family pet. They wrote: Rex You Were Our
Furry Pride And Joy Until We Let You Get Walked
By That Neighbour Boy!
I guess in this one they went for honesty mixed
with humour. Too bad their dog only knows two
tricks now: Dead Dog, and Stay!
Oops, there I go again using humour as my crutch!
I havent yet decided what my own epitaph might
say, but I do think Ill try to add something odd, or
quirky! Id like to think that if anyone comes to visit
my resting place, theyd go away with a little smile,
not tears. One American lady had a city parking me-
ter attached to her tombstone! I dont know if she
got a lot of parking tickets, or was taking a shot at
her city, but it is pretty funny to think of having your
visit on a timed meter! I do know this when they
play songs at my funeral, I want the last one to be
Trooper playing: Were Here for a Good Time (Not
a Long Time) because that song always makes me
smile, and life is short!

tion for the Strathmore Stampede is underway.
Stampede fans are encouraged to bring their
cheque books to the Grey Eagle Resort and Ca-
sino for the Strathmore Sponsor Canvas Auction
April 6.
Fans, businesses and organizers will have the
refreshments, as fans have a chance to socialize
about the chuckwagon races.
The chuckwagon races are a crowd favourite,
and this auction provides a chance for companies
to sponsor a wagon and cheer it on to victory.
The canvases for Kurt Bensmiller, Rae Croteau
Jr., Layne MacGillivray and Kelly, Kirk, Mark and
Mitch Sutherlands wagons will be up for bidding.
The more successful, well-known drivers are
sure to fetch a pricier canvas, but there is also a

Budget 2017 was presented to the House of
Commons on March 22. The Liberal government
and their finance minister, Bill Morneau, have
again presented a budget that will leave billions
of dollars of debt for children and grandchildren
to pay.
The Liberals have decided they want to continue
to nickel and dime Canadians so they can further
add to the taxpayers already maxed-out credit
cards.
There are tax hikes that will hurt working fami-
lies and affect our most vulnerable citizens like
our seniors, who have been completely ignored.
These tax hikes will negatively impact people
with young children.
Prime Minister Trudeaus government has in-
sive schemes. Our Conservative Party will contin-
ue to be the voice of taxpayers.
While this Prime Minister is off vacationing and
taking selfies, Bow River constituents need lead-
ership and relief now. For the natural resource
sector, this budget is like kicking Alberta when it
is down, since the Liberals are changing the way
deductions for newly-found oil and gas wells are
calculated.
These are tough times for people across Alberta.
We need a budget that creates jobs, and incentiviz-
es innovation and growth in our small businesses.
Unfortunately, this Liberal budget did nothing to
address those issues. The only growth we have
seen since 2015 is that the federal government
has grown by 12 per cent. Raising taxes on alco-
hol and tobacco, hiking EI premiums, slashing tax
credits brought in by the previous Conservative
government, and growing the size of government
are not ways to jumpstart a stale economy.
The Liberals have allocated money to prosecute
small businesses like professional services, agri-
culture producers, etc., because they believe they
are tax cheats. Nothing could be further from the
truth. Small businesses value their money, and in-
vest it in hiring local people and supporting our
rural economy.
Companies across Canada are ready to pack up
and leave for the United States. Their current gov-
ernment understands that business taxes must be
low, and you cannot have a regressive carbon tax
if you hope to be competitive on the world stage.
Yet there was no tax relief whatsoever in this bud-
get.

Hope Bridges will present their fourth annual
Wine and Art Auction fundraiser at the Strathmore
Travelodge on April 3 starting at 3 p.m.
The event has grown over the last few years,
and this year Hope Bridges aims to have around
80 to 100 silent auction items up for bidding.
Its nice and laid back. You can come as you
are, its very open. However, if you want to dress
up for the event then you are more than welcome,
throughout the afternoon, and the live auction
starts at 3:45 p.m. TUESDAYS

Hope Bridges is currently accepting donation
items for the auction.
We encourage local businesses to get involved,
said Reinholdt. Wine and art are encouraged but
we are open to any creative ideas.
Several big-ticket items include two Egyptian pa-
pyrus pieces as well as two vintage yarn-bombed
bikes. There will also be many small items up for
bid including baking, sewing, floral, wine and tra-

After the Strathmore Storm collapsed in the
third period of their opening Midget A Pro-
vincial matchup, they regrouped and powered
their way to the silver medal on home ice last
weekend.
The Storm trailed the Seera Icemen 3-2 en-
tering the third period of their opening game,
when the wheels fell off. They went on to lose
7-2.
Needing to win to reach the semis, the Storm
battled adversity, finishing round robin play 3-1.
In the final, it was a rematch against the Ice-
men, but once again, the Storm couldnt find
the edge they needed, losing 5-2 March 26 at
the Strathmore Family Centre.
The boys were really excited to be play-
ing in front of their home crowd all weekend,
said Storm head coach Doug Raycroft. Having
played six games in four days made it tough,
but at the end of the day, its hard to beat any
team when you are in the penalty box as much
as we were.
As much as Raycroft doesnt want to lean on
the officiating as an excuse, there was an obvi-
ous imbalance in the calls in the final. The Ice-
men received one minor penalty to the Storms
35 minutes in the sin bin.
Brian Butland Jr. cut the Icemens 2-0 lead
in half at the 8:14 mark of the first period on a
feed from Will Kathol and Parker Keer.
The Storm was behind the eight ball in the
second, spending all but two minutes of the
frame in the penalty box.
The CFR Bisons 2016-17 Hockey Season has come to an

Brandon Pederson.
Obviously, at the time, it was a pretty defeat-
ing loss. We lost the opportunity that we fought
so hard for all year, said Storm captain Cort
Armstrong. Looking back now, it feels like a
win. It was great to play these games at home,
in front of the biggest crowds that we have seen
all season.
Playing so much of the final on the penalty
kill, the Storms bench was shortened drasti-
cally after the semifinals against the Crowfoot
Coyotes, when Chase Clayton was driven into
the boards, snapping his ankle.
The Storm still hung on to the 8-2 win, but
their lineup just wasnt the same without Clay-
ton.
We really fought hard all weekend, said
Raycroft. The boys believed that we could pull
this off, it just sucks in the end coming so close
and not winning.
The Storm wrapped up their round robin
play with wins over the Lomond Lakers (9-2)
March 23, Red Deer Kings Energy Chiefs (3-2)
March 24 and Vermilion Credit Union Tigers (7-
3) March 25.
Jayden Hendricks finished with six goals and
four assists, while Butland Jr. recorded five
goals and five assists, tying for second in tour-
nament scoring.
We came a long way this season winning our
league and making it this far in provincials,
said Raycroft. Im really proud of these guys
and the way they handled themselves this sea-
son.

After waiting nearly a month to win their zone champion-
ship, the Strathmore U19B Ice must have felt like they were
playing rapid fire this past weekend in Lacombe during their
provincial championships.
Despite playing five games over three days, the Ice were
able to find enough energy to walk away with the silver medal.
The Ice was clipped 8-6 by Medicine Hat in the provincial
final.
Becky Driver scored a pair of goals, while Darcie Weir, Kei-
rsten Gron, Brooklyn Reinhart and Kennedy Elder supplied
one goal each.
We certainly werent a dominating team this season, but we
played consistent ringette and were in every game. If we got
a couple bounces go our way, we knew we would be hang-
ing around by the end of the weekend, said Ice head coach
Sonny Warrack.
Medicine Hat came in ranked as the top seed, after skating
through the regular season with just one loss, a 6-5 shave job
by the Ice back in November.
We played them three times in the regular season, so we
knew we were in tough and that we had to play good in order
to beat them, said Warrack. They had a deeper bench
their 17 skaters to our 11 but we hung in there with them,
we just couldnt get the extra bounce or two we needed to
push us over the top.
In the semis, the Ice cooked Fort Saskatchewan 13-6. Weir
scored eight goals, Driver and Brooklyn Reinhart each bagged
a pair and Gron added a single.
We were a little rusty, having only played 12 games in
the past three weeks, but we were able to shake it off pretty
quickly and get back up to speed again, said Warrack.
Playing in the final round robin game, the Ice were slighted
6-5 by the Calgary Northwest Surge. Weir and Reinhart each
sniped a pair and Driver chipped in with a single.
Against Lacombe, the Ice pulled out a 9-4 win courtesy of
Weir and Driver supplying four goals apiece and Kennedy El-
der adding the other.
The Ice opened the tourney with a bang, dismantling St.
Albert 14-1. Elder scored six times, while Weir, Driver, Jemma
Warrack, Gron and Reinhart chipped in offensively.

Chiefs aim at provincial title

The Midget AA provincial champion-
ships are underway at the Pason Cen-
tennial Arena in Okotoks, as the Wheat-
land Chiefs vie for their first provincial
championship in the franchises 25-year
history.
We have come so far, to finish the
season off with a provincial title would
be huge, said Chiefs captain Ryan Bell.
This is such a great organization with
a lot of great teams that have come be-
fore us. It would be nice to be the first
team to bring the title back to Strath-
more.
The Chiefs clobbered the competition
this season. Finishing the regular sea-
son at 31-2-3, with 207 goals for and 66
goals against, they captured the South
division title in Medicine Hat and swept
the Airdrie Lightning for the South Cen-
tral Alberta Hockey League crown two
weeks ago.
The provincials, featuring the host
Okotoks Oilers Black, the Strathcona
Warriors from the North Alberta Hock-
ey League, the CBHA Rangers from the
Calgary division and St. Albert Crusad-
ers from the Edmonton division, got
underway March 30.
The boys are pretty fired up coming
off the big win in Airdrie. Preparing for
provincials, we wanted to keep them
focused and get them on the ice as
much as possible, staying in the flow of
things before the tourney starts, said
Chiefs assistant coach Matt Gregory.
The Chiefs took on the Rangers in
the first game of the tournament March
30. The Chiefs and Rangers met back
on Feb. 17. The Chiefs doubled up the

Rangers 6-3 at the Strathmore Family
Out of the five teams competing this
weekend, the Rangers have won the
most provincial titles, with three. They
captured the prize in 1980, 1992 and
2007.
We have already been successful
against two of the teams in provincials,
so that gives us a bit of confidence
heading into the tournament, said
Chiefs defenseman Scott Desserre.
March 31 sees the Chiefs play a dou-
ble header; first, they battle the Crusad-
ers at 12:30 p.m.
The Crusaders are searching for their
first provincial title since winning it all
back in 2009. They finished second in
their division, going 19-11-2 with 116
goals for and 89 goals against in 32
games.
That same evening, the Chiefs tackle
the hosts at 9:30 p.m.
We have a big rivalry with the
Okotoks team, so that should be a
good game, said Bell. We really like
the way the schedule has broken down.
I think its a good thing that we play
two games on the second day of the
tournament against teams that are also
playing two games that day.
The Oilers lost 4-1 to the Chiefs back
on Feb. 26 in Murray Arena.
We got a pretty good idea about
what Okotoks is like, said Gregory.
They are a big, strong, physical team
that should be a great test for us.
The Chiefs close out round robin play
against the Strathcona Warriors April 1.
The Warriors are also searching for
their first provincial title and finished
second in their division. They went 18-
10-4 this season with 117 goals for and

87 goals against in 32 games.
We dont really look into other
teams records at this point, said Greg-
ory. Its provincials and everyone is
coming from different leagues, so we
have to go out there and do what we do
best and see what happens at the end
of the day.
With no quarterfinals or semis, the
top two teams coming out of the round
robin will meet up in the gold medal
game April 2 at 3 p.m. The bronze

It was a banner year for the Zone 2
U19A ringette team that was thrown to-
gether on a whim before the season,
and it nearly ended in a Western Cana-
dian Ringette championship.
Representing the province of Alber-
ta, Zone 2 reached the finals, losing
to team Saskatchewan 5-2 March 25 at
Gateway Red Arena in Winnipeg.
It hasnt quite sunk in yet that we are
the second best team in all of Western
Canada, said Zone 2 head coach Steve
Rosenberg. Saskatchewan was the fa-
vourite going in and they were a very
strong team. Ultimately, we couldnt get
past them, but thats fine with us. It was
an incredible run for a team in its first
year.
Local product Lauryn Eitzen netted a
goal in the final.
Wheatland County was well repre-
sented on the Zone 2 team: Taneil Kalb-
hen and Jessica Clyne are from Rocky-
ford, and Ashley LeCavalier and Eitzen
are Strathmore products.
Kalbhen dominated the tournament:
she led Westerns with 13 goals and 16
points in six games.
It was an exciting tournament to be
a part of, said Kalbhen. Im not even
that upset that we didnt win. It was a
great experience and we came so far as
a team.
For her efforts, Kalbhen was named
to the tournament all-star team, receiv-
ing a commemorative jersey, along with
the five other players selected.
Zone 2 picked up other awards dur-
ing the skills competition, when Dani-
elle Rosenberg won the fastest skater
competition and Team Alberta won the
overall skills competition.
Team Alberta needed overtime to
reach the gold medal game, when they
downed the host East End Transcona
Wings 9-8 in the semis. Kalbhen sniped
four goals and Clyne supplied two as-
sists.
In their final round robin game, Al-
berta fell 4-1 to Saskatchewan. Kalbhen
netted the only goal for Alberta.
Alberta started Westerns with a daunt-
ing schedule, taking on the host prov-
ince and host team in a double header
on the first day of competition.
They opened with a 5-2 win over
team Manitoba. Kalbhen scored once
and Clyne supplied one goal and one
assist, and LeCavalier chipped in with
one helper.
Alberta doubled up on the host Wings
8-4 later that afternoon. Kalbhen buried
five goals, Clyne registered one of each
and LeCavalier added another assist.
Alberta picked up a 6-3 win over
team B.C. March 24. Kalbhen scored a
pair, Clyne finished with a goal and an
assist, and LeCavalier recorded three
assists.
It was always our goal to make it to
Westerns, said Kalbhen. It was fun to
take it as far as we did. We always stuck
together and we will be friends forever
because of this.
Westerns wraps up a season that
saw Zone 2 capture gold at the Lonnie
Krahn tournament in Calgary, gold in
a Sherwood Park tournament and gold
in the Airdrie Ring of Fire tournament.

Dorothy Kersch passed away
peacefully in the morning hours of
March 22, 2017 in Strathmore, AB.
Dorothy was born on the Wilson Farm near Har-
ris, SK, January 6, 1930. Dorothy, much-cherished
wife, mother, grandmother and friend, will be lov-
ingly remembered by her husband Mel of 65 years,
daughter Maxine (Hugh), son Lee (Karen) and their
families, extended family and friends. Dorothy cre-
ated a loving home, welcoming people with a gentle
smile, kind words and delicious meals. She loved
to socialize but she also cherished her quiet times
with family. She enjoyed reading or crocheting and
sewing love & remembrance into every treasure she
created. Words cannot adequately express our ap-
preciation to those amazing people at Sagewood for
their special care and kindness and we also send
our gratitude to Dr. Gooden, who cared for Dorothy
with such gentleness and compassion. Donations in
