Don fell in love with the Upper Peninsu-
la of Michigan and has revisited the area in
past years.
Kincheloe, also known as Kinross Air
Force Base has since closed and is now
home to Kinross Correctional Institution, a
state prison.
Reassigned as Base Controller in 1966 to
help build an air base in northern Thailand,
Don spent more than a year as Budget Offi-
cer on the commanders staff, even though the
position required an Air Force Captain or
above rank. Don also found himself taking
a course in road building. The landing strip
was put together with perforated steel plank-
ing.
The holes in the steel allowed rocks to
squeeze up in the rainy season, damaging the
propellers of the single engine fighters in serv-
ice at the time. We got buckets of tar and
filled the holes. This saved thousands of dol-
lars in the cost of new props.
Don retired again at the end of that year.
Following the Thai experience and home
with his wife, 20 years later, we got to talk-
ing about retirement and the benefits of a 20
year career. Don had 15 years from com-
bined service in the Navy and Air Force but
at age 54, he was unlikely to land a spot in any
service.
At the Oklahoma Army National Guard in
Tulsa, they gave me an age waver and I was
able, once more, to wear the uniform. I en-
joyed my Navy time most and would have
liked to have served in just one of the serv-
tory making development was the dis-
covery of a group of primitive people
who had no knowledge of the outside
world. The Philippines consist of over

anyone from the more developed pop-
ulations.
After ten years in the USAF, J.D. was
medically grounded. He applied for and
was accepted in an Air Force program
that allowed him to attend law school at
the McGeorge School of law in Sacra-
mento, California. Following graduation
but still part of the Air Force, Lt. Colonel
Cavens first assignment was to Lowry
Air Base in Denver, serving as Chief of
Civil law and the Chief of Military Jus-
tice. Elevated to the role of Chief Mil-
itary Prosecutor, Caven covered the up-
per Midwest prosecuting the more se-
rious courts marshals. Caven also
served as Staff Judge Advocate at Hurl-
burt Field in Florida for four years.
A final assignment was as Chief Area
Defense Counsel for the US West Coast.
My wifes family in Kansas had been
coming to the Lake of the Ozarks since
World War 2 and we heard about a new
development called The Villages at
the lake. Our first tour was via bulldozer
roads in what is now one of the lakes
showpiece properties.
After 21 years in uniform, J.D. Caven
retired with three Distinguished Flying
Crosses, 11 Air Medals, and five Meri-
torious Service Medals.

Comparing his fathers in-service days,
Joe said, The chow was nearly always
good on the Gato. The cook would bake
loaves of bread and you could pick up the
bakery aroma throughout the submarine.

hatches where it was cooler than on the
main deck and below. Our patrols would
last sometimes as long as 90 days. I
know we went 30-40 days without seeing
the sunshine.
Happier moments included steak dinner
on the halfway point of a patrol and when
in a presumably safe location, Swim Call
was announced by the captain. The guys
would swim in their shorts around the hull
of the sub while a marksman with a rifle
would keep an eye out for sharks.
In May of 1968, the Gato was ordered to
assist in the search for the nuclear sub-
marine Scorpion that had mysteriously

gone down in the Atlantic.
We called Brandywine, this is Polar
Chief; Brandywine, this is Polar Chief, by
underwater radio and other means, over
and over.
We were on station for three days and
found no evidence of the lost sub. Scor-
pion was one of two American submarines
lost that year. It was a very low point for
the sub fleet.
Following duty on a pair of sub tender
surface ships, Joe left the navy with seven
years and three months of service and is
now a Field Service Engineer for a med-
ical equipment firm.
I would recommend the navy to anyone
about to graduate high school. I enlisted
for six years and got to see a lot of the
world, including Spain where the U.S.
has a submarine base. If I ever left the
United States, I think Spain would be my
next choice.
