Pressure to cut weight can be harmful

Wrestlers have greater
risk for eating disorders

J remembers sitting in an
elementary school cafeteria,
surrounded by friends who
were devouring chicken nug-
gets and french fries.
He ate carrots and lettuce
from the salad bar.
J, a former North
Carolina wrestler who asked
to remain anonymous,
weighed 70 pounds and was
dieting to make a 65-pound
weigh-in for a wrestling
match. Cutting weight was
a part of his life for most of
his career.
Its just the sport in
general, he said. I mean,
everybody does it, and its
just like to get the competi-
tive edge.
NCAA regulations and
improving attitudes among
coaches have made wrestling
safer, but problems persist
with cutting weight. Studies
have found that male wres-
tlers have a higher risk of
developing eating disorders
than other men the same
age.
This trend concerned Anna
Bardone-Cone, a UNC pro-
fessor who researches eating
disorders.
This kind of yo-yo from
weight gain, weight loss,

Concealed handgun permit holders
would be allowed to carry handguns on
UNC-system and N.C. community college
campuses if a March bill passes in the
General Assembly.
N.C. Rep. Kyle Hall, R-Rockingham,
said in a statement he proposed House
Bill 251 after an Appalachian State stu-
dent expressed his concerns over being
forbidden to carry a gun and protect him-
self on campus despite having a con-
cealed carry permit.
Constitutional rights should not have
to be checked-in simply for walking onto a
college campus, he said in the statement.
I believe law-abiding citizens who go

holders to have guns anywhere on campus.
The North Carolina chapter of Moms
Demand Action, a pro-gun control group,
is working on building relationships with

Legislators should listen to the college
students, administrators and law enforce-
ment officers who dont want this and
know that guns on campus is a dangerous
idea, Clark said. They should be the voic-

Without FAFSA retrieval tool, tax information harder to locate

A tool to streamline
the FAFSA process was
removed this month.

The nationwide IRS data
retrieval tool for the Free
Application for Federal
Student Aid commonly
known as FAFSA is unavail-
able until further notice.
The tool, removed in
March, is used to obtain tax
information from the IRS for
student financial aid eligibil-
ity, said Tabatha Turner, the
senior associate director for
the Office of Scholarships and
Student Aid at UNC.
Turner said the tool is a
more efficient way to access
tax information than directly
requesting an IRS tax tran-
script a paper form that
would be sent to the family
and then to the school.
Any student who had not
yet filed for FAFSA for the
2017-2018 school year would
be affected by the DRT tool
being down, she said.
Since UNCs FAFSA form
became available in October
and its deadline is two
months earlier than most
other states, Turner said few
students at UNC were affect-
ed by the change since many
had already filed the form.
Students who had filed
the FAFSA form and were
selected for verification
when income information
is checked for accuracy
would also be affected by the
tools removal, she said.
It delays students from
getting financial aid rewards,
Turner said.
The Office of Scholarships
and Student Aid can make
financial awards based on a
signed copy of a parent and
students tax return.
But she said the disburse-
ment of financial aid funds
will be held in the fall until
the office gets the copy of the
financial aid transcript.
This gives them a few
months to get that (informa-
tion) instead of holding up
their financial aid package,
Turner said.
The University uses FAFSA
to determine eligibility and
amounts for federal financial
aid, Turner said.
The financial aid office uses
a separate and more detailed
form, the College Board CSS
Profile, to award aid from
University funds. Unlike the
FAFSA form, the CSS costs
money to fill out.
FAFSA is notoriously
complicated, said Cassandra
Davis, research assistant pro-
fessor at the Education Policy
Initiative at Carolina.
Theres these extra steps
in a process that should be
straightforward, Davis said.
FAFSA applies to students
at universities, community
colleges, as well as others
looking to earn educational
certificates, Davis said.
Its typically geared for a
certain population of students
people who are more likely
to not be able to afford these
opportunities, Davis said.
Michala Patterson, a
first-year student at UNC,
receives financial aid through
FAFSA. She said as an only
child filling out the form
manually with her her single
mother, the form was very
unclear, and they had no
instruction.
The level of difficulty for it
was sky high, mostly because
it required a lot of tax infor-
mation that we did not really
know about, she said.
State aid programs and
funds are also available to
students, Turner said.
Just because a student
doesnt apply by the deadline,
doesnt mean the money has
run out, she said.

The Producers to premiere Friday Established 1893

Its springtime for Hitler
once more.
The student theater group
Company Carolina is per-
forming the 1968 musical
comedy The Producers
this weekend at the Historic
Playmakers Theatre.
The show is about a pro-
ducer and accountant who
decide to put on the worst
show ever and have it close
in one night in order to make
money. Eighty students audi-
tioned for the show and 22
were cast.
The Producers is the
second show of the spring
semester, and the cast has
been working on it since
classes started in January,
producing artistic director
Elizabeth Moseley said.

Swanson. Its Rices first show
with Company Carolina, but
she said shes had formal act-
ing training since she was in
fourth grade.
Im excited to get on stage
and show the audience how
much work we put into it and
how much dedication and
bonding has gone into build-
ing a show thats so big, Rice
said.
The company rehearses six
days a week, for at least three
to four hours at a time, with
the dress rehearsals leading
up to the performances last-
ing up to seven hours.
It has been a lot of work,
and it has been very reward-
ing, but I think itll be even
more rewarding to share
that with the audience, she
said.
Moseley said producing a
classic show puts a lot of pres-
sure on her as a producer.
Its such a big spectacle
of a show, Moseley said. Its
very costume-heavy and its a
very flashy, big dance number
kind of musical. And so there
is a lot of pressure to get all
of that together and to bud-
get everything. Its hard to
do on the theater companys
budget.
As a stage manager,
junior Erik Koehler is at
every rehearsal. He said he
is thrilled to put on such a
famous show.

shows, Koehler said. Were
just trying to do something
different so its not the same
old thing over again.
Rice said her favorite scene
involves the cast perform-
ing an awful and offensive
Broadway show that the main
characters hoped would make
money.
All three company mem-
bers said the show is incred-
ibly funny, which is why
Koehler said it would be a
great break for anyone feeling
stressed right now.
Its a great way to lighten
the mood, especially around

this time of year with finals
approaching and everything,
Koehler said.
This is a great way to
remember everything fun and
not to take anything too seri-
ously.

of my mind. Well, Im graduat-
ing in the spring and things
are winding down, so let me do
some of the legwork for you:

great tool where you can find
funding tailored to you.
Check inside your major for
funding opportunities. I kept
an eye out for the School of
Media and Journalisms annual
scholarships. If anything, just
settle down and tuck into UNCs
undergraduate scholarships
page, which anticipates all total-
ly relatable questions you might
have, like Are there scholar-
ships for Episcopalians?
Heres hoping youll get to
do a Cool Thing like this too.
After all, I learned a lot
A
lmost 250 years of
slavery, 100 years of
legal segregation and
discrimination and over 50
years of redlining and other
forms of institutional rac-
ism beyond that. All of these
factors have led to the dis-
proportionate poverty found
in black communities in
the United States, and all of
them are cause for the need
for reparations.
This idea is not without
precedent: in 1952, Israel
and West Germany signed
an agreement that West
Germany would pay repara-
tions to Jewish people from
Germany in the aftermath of
the Holocaust. Reparations
are not unheard of even with-
in the context of the United
States. The Civil Liberties
Act of 1988 compensated all
survivors of the Japanese-
American internment camps
with $20,000 each. But
despite over 400 years of
oppression, the black commu-
nity in the United States has
never received reparations for
the damages done to them.
Given the existing precedents,
it is not unreasonable for rep-
arations to be demanded.
So, who would receive
these reparations? Well,
William Darity, a public
policy professor at Duke
University, and Dania Francis,
an economics professor at the
University of Massachusetts-
Amherst, proposed two
requirements for eligibility:
First, an individual would
have to provide reasonable
documentation that they had
at least one ancestor who was
enslaved in the United States,
and, second, an individual

would have to demonstrate
that at least ten years before
the onset of the reparations
program, they self-identified
as black, African American,
colored or Negro on a legal
document. This is only one of
many possibilities.
How much is owed in
reparations? Well, if we take
into consideration all slave
labor from the late 1700s to
1865, the black American
community would be owed
$6.4 trillion in 2015 dollars.
That calculation is courtesy
of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther
King Jr., by the way, who
advocated for reparations
for slavery in his 1963 book,
Why We Cant Wait. These
calculations do not take into
account other forms of legal
oppression since that time.
It must be admitted
that this is most certainly
a hefty sum, and certainly
one which the United States
government could not pay
off all at once. An immediate
lump-sum payment to each
individual is probably not
the ideal form of compensa-
tion in this case. So, how
would reparations be imple-
mented then? The best solu-
tion to this problem might

be the creation of a series of
programs designed to bolster
the black American commu-
nity. These could include a
fund to provide scholarships
to prospective black college
students, low-interest loans
for black-owned businesses
and a small universal pen-
sion for black Americans,
all of which would be put in
place for several decades.
Needless to say, reparations
arent going to happen soon.
Every two years since 1989,
Representative John Conyers
has introduced House
Resolution 40, which only
would create a commission to
investigate how, potentially,
some form of remedy for the
damages caused by slavery
might be implemented. Every
time it has been introduced,
the bill has stalled. Congress
remains so firmly opposed to
reparations that it refuses to
even investigate the possibility
of reparations.
These reparations would
go a long way to improv-
ing conditions for the black
American community but
even then, its not a cure-
all. Alleviating the eco-
nomic effects of centuries of
oppression does not prevent
future economic oppression,
nor does it do anything to
alleviate other forms of sys-
temic prejudice and discrim-
ination. Just as important
as material solutions to the
effects of racism is sustained
work in advancing anti-rac-
ist education and activism.
It is imperative that people
recognize and work to dis-
mantle and destroy systems
of oppression in this country
and worldwide.

president race in UNCs
history. From the early
disqualifications to the
appeals to the violation
complaints, this race will
remain a blemish on stu-
dent governance on this
campus for a while. Before
the end of March we
expect to have a whole new
cast of characters in the
high-level offices of stu-
dent government, but will
anything actually change?
By casting a vote in
todays election, you are
placing your confidence
in the system we currently
have. Every completed
ballot is a sign of confi-
dence and care about stu-
dent governance at UNC
and ideally, we would
have no reservations about

ing this system and the
legacy of inaction that is
plaguing our current form
of governance.
The moment we see
a new student body
president, we hope to see
people lobbying our new
leader to reject the model
of leadership that they are
inheriting. From the very
first day in the office, there
will be the question of
who the SBP serves. If our
new elected and appoint-
ed leaders act in a way
that indicates their prior-
ity is anything other than
the student body, then we
have concrete information
that we need to radically
rework our current system
of student governance.
Our board maintains
genuine hope that the new
SBP, whoever he or she is,
seeks the best and bright-
governance are systemic,
we also have faith that it
can rebuild. The best way
to do this, we think, is to
bury the hatchet from this
election and put in a good-
faith effort to break down
the loyalties from cam-
paign season and create a
student government that
represents its students.
We encourage whoever
is elected to please speak
boldly and candidly with
the students as often as
possible. We will criticize
you for what you say if
we take issue with it, but
wed rather criticize a real
statement than criticize
you for saying nothing.
This editorial may
come off as pessimistic,
but we are sincerely wor-
ried about the future of
student voice on campus.

Students spin over interactive art exhibit

An exhibition of brightly
colored kinetic sculptures
have popped up around cam-
pus, giving students a new
way to interact with art.
The exhibition is called Los
Trompos Spanish for the
tops and is a collabora-
tion between two Mexican
designers, Hctor Esrawe and
Ignacio Cadena.
The sculptures, which
were designed to look like
oversized spinning tops, were
created by weaving fabric in
a traditional style by Mexican
artisans. They are set on bases
that allow viewers to sit on
and spin the sculptures. The
exhibit consists of four tops on
the front lawn of the Ackland
Art Museum and four more
spread across campus.
Planning for the exhibit
began over the summer when
Katie Ziglar was named
director of the Ackland Art
Museum.
When I arrived last
summer one of the things I
noticed was our front ter-
race was very empty and our
building is set off from the
road quite a bit so it can be
invisible to people, Ziglar
said. We looked at ways to
enliven our front yard and
put something intriguing out
there that will catch peoples
attention.
She said one of the main
goals of the exhibit is to intro-
duce people to a new way of
interacting with art outside of
the traditional hands-off style
people associate with art. The
sculptures invite students to
use more than just their eyes by
interacting with the structures.

Trustees say goodbye to student body president

The Board of Trustees
presented Student Body
President Bradley Opere with
a resolution of appreciation
at its meeting Thursday, and
Opere gave a farewell speech
as he prepares to graduate.
Opere thanked the board,
Chancellor Carol Folt, the
student body and his student
government team among
others for their support
and acceptance.
In many ways it is because
of that acceptance that I
believe and knew I was a
Tar Heel born, even though
I wasnt a Tar Heel bred, I
sure as hell will be a Tar Heel
dead, Opere said.
The meeting opened with
remarks from Dwight Stone,
the boards chairperson,
about legislation that will
affect UNC.

Arts Everywhere is a new
campus wide arts initiative
supported by the Chancellors
office, Rachel Ash, the

of the UNC-system Board of
Governors from 32 voting
members to 24 by 2019, and
the trustees need to prepare
for these changes.
My hope is that each of us
as trustees will continue to
place a high priority on main-
taining the existing relation-
ships and starting new ones
as needed, Stone said.
Stone praised UNCs fac-
ulty for attracting funding,
such as money provided in
the 2016 bond referendum.

understand what is at stake
here, he said.
Trustees also approved the
fee for parking on campus at

fees, which included a one
percent increase for the first
three years, the years 2017 to

research contributions have
been made at the moment,
Folt said she believes people
understand the value of
research conducted at UNC.

UNC cancer researcher to speak at TED conference

At this years global TED
conference, a UNC postdoc-
toral fellow will deliver a talk
about how to cure cancer.
TED Fellows chose
Elizabeth Wayne, the first and
only fellow in the T32 pro-
gram at the UNC Eshelman
School of Pharmacy, as one
of 15 people from all over the
world to present at the con-
ference in Vancouver, Canada,
this April.
Wayne will discuss her
research in using immune
cells as a drug delivery tech-
nique for curing cancer.
She said she always knew
she wanted to be a TED
Fellow and was excited and
humbled when she found out
in December she was chosen
for the program.

lar ages. Bardone-Cone said
some wrestlers will restrict and

Theyre very irritable, you
know, when theyre in this
kind of restricting their
food and trying to lose weight,
Bardone-Cone said. And we
see that with anorexia.
Athletes as a whole are
more likely to develop eating
disorders, but this risk rises
for sports that emphasize
slimness in conjunction with
success, like running, gym-
nastics and wrestling.
While most eating disorder
research focuses on women
and girls, a 2004 study pub-
lished in the Clinical Journal
of Sports Medicine found that
eight percent of male athletes
exhibited the symptoms of
an eating disorder, compared
with 0.5 percent of male non-
athletes.
Males are not immune,
Bardone-Cone said. And this
is a thing that happens, and
it causes them physiologically
and psychologically the same
kind of problems.

When Heilmann lost the
141-pound spot his sophomore
year at UNC, he had to drop
to a lower weight class 133
pounds if he wanted to start.
I went down for the team,
basically, Heilmann said.
Head coach Coleman Scott
walked him through the pro-
cess to make sure he was safe.
Scott took Heilmann grocery
shopping to show him healthy
foods and recipes and consult-
ed a dietician who works with
MMA fighters. Heilmann,
who struggled with weight in
high school because of a lack
of knowledge and resources,
said he learned how to bal-
ance making weight and being
healthy through Scott.

safer competing environment
for UNC wrestlers than there
was in the past.
I only have positive things
to say about Coach Scott,
Stratton said. He is an advo-
cate for long-term health and
an advocate for safe nutrition
practices, so Id say that our
values of nutrition align.

For wrestlers who are strug-
gling, Bardone-Cone ponders
one question: Then what?
Bardone-Cone is concerned
with life after wrestling for
those who engage in disor-
dered eating. While some
wrestlers, like J, can transition
back to a normal diet, she
said others might struggle to
quit the issues that stem from
unsafe weight cutting.
As researchers, we want to
know who takes which path,
Bardone-Cone said, so we
can help figure out who do
we need to intervene with
to make sure that someone
whos probably going to keep
with those behaviors doesnt.
Heilmann has seen
improvement in the sport first-
hand. Hes noticed an empha-
sis on education and healthy
weight loss; his younger
brother, a high school wrestler
in New Jersey, has benefitted
from access to a nutritionist
and information about how to
safely manage weight.
My brother does it the
right way Heilmann said.
Ive heard a lot of other kids
are doing the same thing
I think that the problems
becoming fixed because people
are learning more about it.

uniform. He wore No. 4,
clean white Nike shoes and
black leggings. He looked like
the Marcus Paige that North
Carolina fans know and love,
just in a different shade of
blue.
Through 41 regular season
games in the D-League, Paige
has averaged 12.5 points, 2.3
rebounds and 2.3 assists.
There have been highlights,
but there havent been any
phone calls from an NBA
team about a 10-day contract.
Its been a long journey
since Paige took the court
for the Tar Heels in the 2016
national championship game.
A lot of games, a lot of com-
mercial flights, a lot of cities,
a lot of basketball.
But tonight? Tonight was

The top-seeded North Carolina
mens basketball team will look to
keep its redemption tour rolling
against No. 4 seed Butler in the
Sweet 16 at 7:09 p.m. tonight.
Fridays game marks the third
year in a row North Carolina will
play in the Sweet 16. Butler hasnt
made it this far since its magical
tournament runs in 2010 and 2011,
when the Bulldogs went to back-to-
back national championship games.
How do they play?
Last years national champion
and Butlers rival in the Big East
Villanova lost just three games
in the regular season. Two of those
defeats came at the hands of the
Bulldogs, and each highlighted
what they do to succeed.
Over the course of both games,
Butler shot a combined 35-for-
59 (59.3 percent) from inside the
3-point line. The Bulldogs have been
able to keep up this clip throughout
the season, as its 54.4 2-point per-
centage ranked 23rd in the country.
In its first game against the
Wildcats, Butler turned the ball over
just eight times en route to a 66-58
win. The team has been among the
nations best at protecting the bas-
ketball all year, ranking 10th in the
nation in turnover percentage.
Who stands out?
Butlers top scorer is junior for-
ward Kelan Martin, who averages
16 points per game off the bench.

hasnt halted Martins success this
season, as he showed with a 19-point
performance in the Bulldogs
second-round win over Middle
Tennessee State on Saturday.
Another name that sticks out
is Kamar Baldwin. The first-year
point guards assist-turnover
ratio hangs right around 1.0, but
his impact cant be understated.
Baldwin has put up some gaudy
shooting numbers in his first year
of collegiate ball (49.3 percent from
the floor and 37.8 percent from
three), and he leads Butler in steals,
tallying 30 more than any other
player on the roster this season.
Whats their weakness?
The Bulldogs are among the
nations worst at hauling in offensive
rebounds, bringing in just 27.3 per-
cent of its own misses this season.
Overall, Butler has grabbed just 34
more rebounds than its opponents

this season. On the other side of
the table, the Tar Heels are the best
offensive rebounding team in the
country and have 473 more boards
than their opponents this season.
If the Bulldogs turn the ball over
more than usual, scoring chances
will be few and far between and
they will likely exit the tournament.
How could they win?
UNC has survived two poor
games from a hobbled Joel Berry so
far the junior guard is a combined
3-for-21 from the field in the tourna-
ment but a third could be what
Butler needs to pull off the upset.
If the Bulldogs limit Berrys impact
while playing to their strengths of
maintaining possession and finding
good looks, they could easily control
the tempo of the game and earn
themselves an Elite Eight berth.

The No. 14 North Carolina mens
lacrosse team takes on No. 10
Maryland at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at
Fetzer Field.
Both teams are looking to right
the ship after tough stretches. The
Tar Heels have lost three of their last
five games, while the Terrapins have
dropped back-to-back contests
each by a one-goal margin.
Here are three things to know
ahead of Saturdays matchup.
Rematch
UNC and Maryland met in the
2016 national title game after taking
very different roads to get there. The
Tar Heels overcame a nightmare
start to make the Final Four, while
the Terrapins won 16 games in a row
heading into the matchup.
But records and reputations
were thrown out the window in
Philadelphia on May 30.
North Carolina opened up the
contest on a 4-0 run. Maryland was
able to settle down, however, scoring
the next four goals to tie the game.
UNC trailed by two goals with
less than five minutes to go, but
clawed back to force overtime. In
the extra period, Tar Heel attacker
Chris Cloutier scored to give North
Carolina its first title in 25 years.

Carolina started this year off slowly.
Through the first month of the
2015-16 season, the Tar Heels were
3-3 and having a bit of an identity
crisis. The struggles led to a team
meeting in a hotel in Amherst,
Massachusetts, where the players and
coaches convened to decide what the
rest of the season would be for them.
UNCs next game after the meet-
ing was an 18-2 dismantling of
Manhattan. The Tar Heels had an
up-and-down regular season, but
caught fire in May and won the title.
This years team faces a similar
dilemma. The reigning national
champions started the season 4-3,
dropping back-to-back home games
over Spring Break before demolish-
ing Dartmouth on March 18.
How the Tar Heels handle the
early adversity will likely be the key
to the rest of their season. A win
over Maryland on Saturday would
be a step in the right direction.
Triple digits
A victory against the Terrapins
would give head coach Joe Breschi
his 100th and could be the kickstart
UNC needs to save its season.
And he is exactly who UNC wants
leading the turnaround. Before he
came to Chapel Hill in 2009, North
Carolina had only gone to the NCAA
Tournament four times in 12 years.
Since his arrival, the Tar Heels have
gone to eight in a row.

Weekly walk-up: Tar Heel first-year right-handed pitcher Luca Dalatri

Similar to the hitters on
the North Carolina baseball
team, each pitcher gets his
own walkout song while
warming up before their
first inning of work during a
game. This week, first-year
pitcher Luca Dalatri spoke
with senior writer Will Bryant
about his song choice and
what it means to him.
The song
Dalatri chose a song that
invokes personal drive. The
song Warriors by Imagine
Dragons has strong lyrics and
a memorable beat that can
get anyone in the zone.
I feel like its a song that,
when I listen to it, it gets me
to that next level and gets me
pumped up, he said.
The process
Dalatri didnt have music
when warming up on the dia-
mond in high school, so the
process of choosing a walkout
song this year was relatively
novel, but that didnt stop him
from selecting a solid tune.
I try to look at the song in
the gym or weight room, he
said. The song that comes on
and gets me going. The one
that gets me to that next level
in the weight room. Warriors
did just that.
The meaning
Dalatri uses his walkout to
help him gather all his energy.
Pitching is an art, and Dalatri
uses his song to help get the
juices flowing.
That was the song that
kind of pumped me up, and I
figured why not, he said. No
better song. Its like a pre-
workout, I like it.
The superstition
The first-year intends to
stick with his tune no matter
what.
Im not one of those guys
thats superstitious, he said.
Im not gonna change it just
for one or two bad outings. I
like the song, honestly, I just
like it. Its gonna be my song.
The opinion
The first-year has received
dazzling reviews on his song
of choice, but he didnt gather
too much input when choos-
ing it. He found the one that
worked best for him and went
with it, regardless of the opin-
ion of his teammates.
Im glad they do (like it),
but its my song, he said. Im
the one going out there to pitch
to it ... its what I like to walk
out to. Its definitely a hit in the
clubhouse, I guess.
The values
Dalatri treats his walk-
out as a vehicle for energy.
Whatever song he finds get-
ting him ready when hes
doing work off the field is the
one he uses on the field. Hes
taking the phrase, Practice
how you play, to a new level.
The Verdict: B+
Dalatris song has intensity
and a pump-up vibe. It evokes
emotion, allowing fans to feel
his passion for the game as
he toes the rubber. It may not
create the feel-good ambiance
of other Tar Heel tunes, but
Dalatris song means business.

out this Saturday, when he
will start Game 2 of UNCs
weekend series with Miami at
Boshamer Stadium.
