Algebra I

2015-16
Miss Ziegler- Rm. 110

Mod 10/11
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday: 12:24-1:11 p.m.
Wednesday: 12:33-1:16 p.m.

Course Description:
The fundamental purpose of this course is to formalize and extend the mathematics that
students learned in the middle grades. The critical areas, called units, deepen and extend
understanding of linear and exponential relationships, contrasting them with each other
by applying linear models to data that exhibit a linear trend and engaging students in
methods for analyzing, solving, and using quadratic functions.

Course Objectives:
By the end of this course, you should be able to:
Rewrite expressions involving radicals and rational exponents using the properties of
exponents.
Factor a quadratic expression to reveal the zeros of the function it defines, and use the
zeroes to sketch a graph of the function.
Complete the square in a quadratic expression to reveal the minimum or maximum value
of the function it defines.
Add, subtract, and multiply polynomials.
Create equations and inequalities in one, two, or more variables, and use them to solve
problems.
Solve equations and inequalities in one variable.
Solve systems of equations graphically and algebraically.
Use function notation to evaluate functions, and define domain and range for each
function.
Graph linear, quadratic, square root, cube root, piece-wise, exponential, and logarithmic
functions.
Write arithmetic and geometric sequences both recursively and with an explicit formula,
use them to model situations, and translate between the two forms.
Write an expression or the inverse of a function.
Define trigonometric ratios and solve problems involving right triangles.

Required Materials:
Textbook - Bring your textbook every day.
Pencil - Bring a pencil to class every day. If I cant read your writing on any assignments,
the work will be marked wrong.
3-ring binder notebook You can use a folder and spiral notebook, but there will be
several handouts and worksheets. A 3-ring binder will be more organized, but if you can
stay organized with a folder and spiral notebook, you can use them. Make sure that you
have paper every day.
Graph paper
Ruler
Calculator- You will need a graphing calculator for later math courses, so I suggest
buying a TI-84 graphing calculator now. If you cannot buy it now, youll need a scientific
calculator.

Classroom Expectations:
1. Come to class on time, prepared, with all supplies and assignments.
2. Be seated and ready to work in the first minutes of class.
3. Turn off and put away cell phones and other electronic devices during class.
4. Pay attention, follow directions, and participate actively in class.
5. Raise your hand before speaking.
6. Respect your classmates and teacher.

You must have a hall pass to walk in the hallways. You may ask for a hall pass only three
times during the quarter, so use them wisely.

Cell Phones
Keep your cell phones and other electronic devices off and away during the entire class
period. If I see it or hear it during class time, I will give you a detention and take the
phone away. If I take it, you may pick your phone up after school in the office.

Attendance Policy:
Regular and prompt class attendance is an essential part of the educational experience.
Wellington High School expects students to exercise good judgment regarding attendance
and absences. Students will accept full responsibility for ensuring their work does not
suffer because of absences. All students are expected to attend every scheduled class on
time. Exceptions may be made for illness and valid emergencies.

Make-up work:
For each day you are absent, you will have one day to work on the material that was
missed (i.e. if you miss three days, then you will have three days to catch up on the
missed work and turn it in on the fourth day, keeping up with all current work.) If an
assignment is due on the day that you are absent, you are expected to turn it in on the day
that you return. It is your responsibility to remember to make up tests and other
assignments.

Test make-up days are almost any day after school in my room. If you want to make the
test up on a certain day, come to my room by 3:00. If you have trouble making tests up
after school, let me know. Ill find a time to come in earlier, so you can make it up.
Again, it is your responsibility to remember make-up work that is missed.

Tests:
Tests will be given after each chapter. We will have a review day before each test at
which time you can ask questions. If you miss the test due to an absence, it is your
responsibility to remember to make it up. If you are absent the day of the test, you will be
expected to make the test up on the day that you return. If you are absent the day before a
test, you can take one day to review the information before you take the test.

Quizzes:
Quizzes will be given throughout the chapter. These quizzes will be announced at least
one day in advance. If you are absent for a quiz, it is your responsibility to make it up.
There will also be bell work and other class work throughout the course that will not be
announced. Be prepared for a bell work each day.

Homework:
Homework will be assigned every day, and it should be completed for the next class
period. If you were not absent and did not complete the homework, you have one day to
complete the homework for half credit. If it is not turned in the next day, you will not
receive any credit for that assignment. You may also receive a lunch detention to
complete missing assignments. Most homework assignments will be checked for
completion, but once a week, the homework will be collected and graded for correctness.
Homework assignments must be completed individually.

Student Evaluation and Grades:

Your quarter grades will be calculated as a percentage from total points possible.
Tests 45%
Quizzes 35%
Homework 10%
Classwork 10%

Each quarter grade (nine weeks) is worth 40% of the final grade in a class, and the exam
grade is 20% of the final grade. You must also pass two out of three grades per semester
to pass for the semester. There will few, if any, extra credit opportunities.

The grades will be rounded to the nearest tenth, and the letter grades will be assigned as
followed:
A= 90-100% B=80-89% C=70-79%
D=60-69% F=<60%

Plagiarism, Cheating, and Academic Integrity:

Plagiarism and cheating are strictly forbidden. Plagiarism is taking the ideas, writings,
images, video, etc. of others and presenting them as if they were original to the user.
Cheating is defined as the giving or receiving of illegal help on anything that has been
determined by the teacher to be an individual effort. Both are considered serious offenses
and will significantly affect your course grade. If I find that you are cheating on an
assignment or assessment, you will receive a zero for that assessment or assignment.
Additional consequences may follow.

General Information:
I expect all of my students to show respect and responsibility. This class will be difficult,
but it is your responsibility to complete the homework and complete all of the
assignments that are required. If you do the work, you will probably do well in the class.

If you do not show respect or do not follow the classroom rules, there will be
consequences for your behavior. These include, but are not limited to, verbal warnings,
seat changes, parental contact, detention, and referral to the office.

If you have any questions or concerns, dont be afraid to ask me. You can always ask me
during class or after class. Im here to help you learn, and Ill help you any way I can, but
I need you to meet me half way. I have high expectations for all of you, and I expect you
to strive to meet those expectations. I am on your side, and I want to help you succeed.

If you are having trouble with anything, come to me immediately and I can work with
you. If you wait until the end of the marking period, it will be TOO LATE. I will be
available to help you understand so you can be successful in this class.
