Highmark Stadium

quick facts
Opened: April 13, 2013
Spectator Capacity: 3,500
Field Size: 110 x 70 square feet

Positioned right on the Monongahela River with the skyline of Pittsburgh across the river, Highmark Stadium has
served as the home of the Riverhounds since its opening in 2013.

One of the premier venues in the Steel City, Highmark Stadium broke ground on June 25, 2012. It was completed
on April 13, 2013 at a total cost of $10.2 million raised entirely through private investment. Along with being the
home of the Pittsburgh Riverhounds, the venue hosts a variety events including local sports ranging from high
school football to college soccer, as well as concerts and is also the home of the Pittsburgh Rebellion of the Leg-
ends Football League.

At the time of its construction, the venues FIFA 2-star certified artificial turf was one of only six fields to earn that
designation in the United States.

On Hounds gamedays, the club is cheered on faithfully by its supporters group, the Steel Army, who are located in
the Paul Child Stand that can be found on the east end of the stadium.

five years on the mon

This season the club will be celebrating Five Years on the Mon - its
fifth year playing at Highmark Stadium.

The first match ever to be played at the venue pitted the Riverhounds
against long-time rival Harrisburg City Islanders in the 2013 season
opener. In front of a sell-out of more than 4,000 in attendance, former
Hound Jose Angulo would score the first-ever goal at Highmark
Stadium, assisted by Matthew Dallman, in the 70th minute to give
Pittsburgh the lead in the second half. Unfortunately, the score would
not hold as the City Islanders responded with tallies in the 78th and
90th minute for the 2-1 victory.
first game
In the four seasons played at Highmark Stadium, the Hounds have
twice held a winning record during the USL regular season - 2013 (6-3-5) and 2015 (6-2-6). The club is 21-21-15
all-time in USL play on the Mon and has never hosted a playoff match at the venue.

Outside of league play, the Hounds have hosted nine matches at Highmark Stadium between the Lamar Hunt U.S.
Open Cup and international friendlies.

Head coach Dave Brandt enters his second year, and first full season, with the Pittsburgh
Riverhounds. A native of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, Brandt, in his first professional coaching
stint, took over head coaching duties for the Hounds eight games into the 2016 season.

Brandt joined the Hounds after spending the past seven years at the United States Naval
Academy. In his 19 years of coaching experience at the collegiate level, Brandt coached his squads
to over 300 wins and held a .786 career winning percentage (310-72-34) and is the fastest coach in
NCAA mens soccer history to reach the 200-win mark.

Along with his seven years at Navy, Brandt spent 12 seasons as head coach of Messiah College,
where he compiled a remarkable 246-25-14 (.888) record. His teams won six NCAA Division III
National Championships, including the 2008 crown, and notched 52 postseason wins both top

2016 Review

A Season of Endurance
The Riverhounds battled roster transformations, coaching transitions and philosophy changes during their 2016 season, the 17th year
in team history. Finishing with a 6-17-7 record, the Hounds placed No. 13 in the USL Eastern conference and No. 12 in goal differential
(31 goals forwarded and 50 goals allowed).
Less than two months before the season opener, it was announced MLS franchise D.C. United purchased midfielder Rob Vincents
contract. Vincent, who led the Hounds with 18 league goals in 2015, went on trial for D.C. United during the offseason. The
permanent transfer was completed on Feb. 16.
At the commencement of the 2016 season, Pittsburgh looked to make the USL playoffs for the second straight season under head
coach Mark Steffens. However, the team started slow and held a 0-4-3 record through its first seven games.
The struggles followed the team to the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Entering in the second round of the tournament, Pittsburgh
bowed out after its first game, losing to Lansdowne Bhoys FC, 2-0, on May 18 at Highmark Stadium.
The Hounds won their first regular season match, 2-1, against Toronto FC II on May 21 at Highmark Stadium. After the game, the team
announced Steffens was relieved of his duties.
Pittsburgh announced Dave Brandt would assume head coaching responsibilities on May 22. Brandt previously coached at the United
States Naval Academy, where he was the winningest active coach at the NCAA Division I level (310-72-34). In Brandts first game with
the Hounds, the team fell, 1-0, to New York Red Bulls II on May 28 at Red Bull Arena.
To help instill his philosophy, Brandt recruited Jack and Nick Thompson to Pittsburgh. Jack signed with the Hounds on June 10 and
Nick penned his contract with the team on June 17. Nick played collegiately for Brandt at Messiah College from 2007-08. In total, the
Hounds saw 38 different players suit up for the club throughout the season.
Brandt earned his first win with the Black and Gold against FC Montreal on June 18 at Highmark Stadium. Midfielder Kevin Kerr and
forward Corey Hertzog netted goals in the 2-1 victory. Hertzog went on to lead the team with 13 goals in 2016.
Pittsburgh steadily improved in Brandts system and held a 3-3-3 record over its final nine games to close out the 2016 season. Overall,
the Hounds went 5-13-4 under the former Navy head coach.
The 2016 season was Pittsburghs fourth year at Highmark Stadium.

Notable Numbers
Corey Hertzog led the Riverhounds and

13
ranked No. 6 in the USL with 13 goals in
2016. The forward recorded one multi-score
game last season, tallying two goals against
Wilmington Hammerheads FC on Aug. 24,
2016, at Highmark Stadium. Hertzog scored 11 of his goals
under Dave Brandt, who was introduced as head coach on
May 23, 2016.
Kevin Kerr recorded his 100th career

100
appearance with the Riverhounds in their
2016 season finale against FC Cincinnati
on Sept. 24, 2016, at Highmark Stadium.
The midfielder ranks No. 10 in games
played in team history, 83 matches away from David Flavius
all-time record of 183 appearances. Kerr played in 27 of 30
scheduled games during the 2016 campaign. Corey Hertzog
was a one-man
Midfielders Danny Earls, Mike
