All About Angles - Chapter 4 Section 1 Book Search

In your book, read the section titled Angles (page 284) and the section titled Radian Measure (pages 285
and 286). As you read, be sure to define the following vocabulary words:
***Hint: A diagram or picture may help you remember many of these terms.

1. Angle- an angle is determined by rotating a ray (half line) about it's endpoint

1. Initial side of an angle- starting position of the ray

1. Terminal side of an angle- the position after rotation

1. Vertex of an angle- endpoint of the ray

1. Standard position of an angle-

1. Positive angle- angle rotates counterclockwise rotation

1. Negative angle- rotates by clockwise

1. Coterminal angle- angles that have the same initial and terminal sides

1. Central Angle- to define a radian you can use central angle of a circle, one whose vertex is the center

of the circle

1. Radian (Follow the link to see a short gif that may make radians easier to understand. **1 rad = 1
radian)- is the measure of a central angle theta that intercepts an arc x equal in length to the radius r

of the circle

Use what you read to answer the following questions:

1. How is an angle determined? Describe using proper vocabulary.

It is determined by rotating a ray (half-line) about its endpoint.

1. What is the difference between an angle in standard position and one that is not?

Standard position perception of an angle fits a coordinate system in which the origin is the vertex and the initial

side coincides with the positive x-axis.

1. What is the difference between positive angles and negative angles?

Positive angles are generated to counter clockwise rotation, and negative in a clockwise position.

1. Draw a picture of.

a. Two positive angles that are coterminal.

a. A positive and and a negative angle that are coterminal.

15. What is the arc length of a central angle of one full revolution around the circle? Explain. 2 (3.14)

16. What is the formula for finding the radian measure of a central angle? Arc length = radius when angle
= radian

17. Use the the fact there are 2 radians in one revolution to find the radian measures of
a. of a revolution 3.14 radius

b. of a revolution. 3.14/2 radius

c. of a revolution. 3.14/3 radius

d. of a revolution. 3.14/4 radius

18. How do you find positive and negative coterminal angles? Positive angles are generated from counter
clockwise rotations while negative angles are generated from clockwise rotations .
