Pans Labyrinth essay #16

At the conclusion of the film, after death, Ofelias soul is resurrected as Moanna, the Princess of the Underworld. At
this point, her father, the King of the Underworld, says to her, You have spilled your own blood rather than the blood
of an innocent. That was the last and most important task. Compare/contrast the lesson she learns from the
performance of this task to the lessons learned by other classic heroes. Some suggestions are Oedipus, Odysseus,
Monkey, and Gilgamesh from the performance of their final tasks.

In 1944 falangist Spain, a young girl, thinking about fairy-tales, is sent along side her

pregnant mom to live with her new stepfather, a ruthless captain of the Spanish navy. For the

duration of the night, she meets a fairy who takes her to an antique faun in the middle of the

labyrinth. He tells her she's a princess, but have to show her royalty with the aid of surviving

three grotesque obligations. If she fails, she will by no means show herself to be the the real

princess and could never see her real father, the king, again.

These tasks that she must complete are very similar to other classic heroes, that go

through rigorous journeys. This story goes through the heros journey, with the heros journey

there are eight steps. The first step is the ordinary world where as the hero, uneasy,

uncomfortable or unaware, is added sympathetically so the target audience can discover with

the scenario or quandary. The hero is proven in opposition to a background of surroundings,

heredity, and personal records. a few sort of polarity inside the heros life is pulling in distinct

guidelines and inflicting pressure. The second is the call to adventure, something shakes up the

situation, either from outside pressures or from something rising up from deep within, so the

hero should face the beginnings of change. The third step is the refusal of the call where the

hero is unknown and tries to flee the situation. Fourth, is meeting with the mentor, and in the

case of pans labyrinth, her mentor is the fuan. Fifth, is crossing the threshold, sixth is quests

and enemies which Ofelia experiences in all her quests. Seventh, is the reward, in this case it
would be Ofelia obtaining the key from the last quest. Eighth, is the road back and ninth is the

resurrection where the hero is tested with the last and final task, to either sacrifice or take their

life for the greater good.

Ofelia in this film goes through the hero's journey and ends up being brave and taking

her own life to save the life of a innocent. In her afterlife we see her being crowned for her good

behavior with her father in this fairy tale realm. In conclusion, Ofelia is a hero figure in this

rigorous film, and just like other heroes such as hercules, Odysseus, and other well renowned

heroes, her quest will be memorable and worth it.
