Performance Task Title Cell Organelles and City Analogies Presentation
Grade Seventh
Designer Thomas Stinson
Performance Task Students will create a cell that shows the major organelles and the functions of those organelles. Also students will
Annotation use analogies to help show how each organelles are related to a major city.
Subject(s) Life Science
Approximate Duration of 80 minutes (block schedule) extra 20 minutes on the following day for students with Extended time
Performance Task accommodations.
Focus Standards S7L2. Students will describe the structure and function of cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems.
a. Explain that cells take in nutrients in order to grow and divide and to make needed materials.
b. Relate cell structures (cell membrane, nucleus, cytoplasm, chloroplasts, and mitochondria) to basic cell
functions.
Complementary S7CS5. Students will use the ideas of system, model, change, and scale in exploring scientific and technological
Standards matters.
b. Understand that different models (such as physical replicas, pictures, and analogies) can be used to represent
the same thing.
S7CS4. Students will use tools and instruments for observing, measuring, and manipulating equipment and
materials in scientific activities.
a. Use appropriate technology to store and retrieve scientific information in topical, alphabetical, numerical, and
keyword files, and create simple files.
S7CS6. Students will communicate scientific ideas and activities clearly.
a. Write clear, step-by-step instructions for conducting particular scientific investigations, operating a piece of
equipment, or following a procedure.
ISTE 2016 Standards Empowered Learner (1)
Students leverage technology to take an active role in choosing, achieving and demonstrating competency in their
learning goals, informed by the learning sciences.
Digital Citizen (2)
Students recognize the rights, responsibilities and opportunities of living, learning and working in an
interconnected digital world, and they act and model in ways that are safe, legal and ethical.
Knowledge Constructor (3)
Students critically curate a variety of resources using digital tools to construct knowledge, produce creative
artifacts and make meaningful learning experiences for themselves and others.
Creative Communicator (6)
Students communicate clearly and express themselves creatively for a variety of purposes using the platforms,
tools, styles, formats and digital media appropriate to their goals.

NGSS Standards Disciplinary Core Ideas

LS1.A: Structure and Function
All living things are made up of cells, which is the smallest unit that can be said to be alive. An organism may
consist of one single cell (unicellular) or many different numbers and types of cells (multicellular).
Within cells, special structures are responsible for particular functions, and the cell membrane forms the boundary
that controls what enters and leaves the cell.
MS-LS1-1. Conduct an investigation to provide evidence that living things are made of cells; either one cell or
many different numbers and types of cells. [Clarification Statement: Emphasis is on developing evidence that living
things are made of cells, distinguishing between living and non-living things, and understanding that living things
may be made of one cell or many and varied cells.]
Complex and microscopic structures and systems can be visualized, modeled, and used to describe how their
function depends on the relationships among its parts, therefore complex natural structures/systems can be analyzed
to determine how they function.
Crosscutting Concepts
MS-LS1-2. Develop and use a model to describe the function of a cell as a whole and ways parts of cells
contribute to the function. [Clarification Statement: Emphasis is on the cell functioning as a whole system and the
primary role of identified parts of the cell, specifically the nucleus, chloroplasts, mitochondria, cell membrane, and
cell wall.] [Assessment Boundary: Assessment of organelle structure/function relationships is limited to the cell wall
and cell membrane. Assessment of the function of the other organelles is limited to their relationship to the whole
cell. Assessment does not include the biochemical function of cells or cell parts.]
Connected Concepts
WHST.6-8.8 Gather relevant information from multiple print and digital sources, using search terms effectively;
assess the credibility and accuracy of each source; and quote or paraphrase the data and conclusions of others while
avoiding plagiarism and following a standard format for citation.(MS-LS1-8)

Description and 1. Students will log onto their Chromebooks when they arrive to class.
Teacher Directions 2. Students will watch as the teacher projects the directions for the Cell Organelles and City Analogies slide
Presentation on the classrooms whiteboard. The information delivered is in the form of a Google Slides
presentation.
3. Teacher will allow students to sign into google classroom and a gain access to the rubric and instructions.
Teacher will go over the instructions and rubric.
4. Students will review the rubric and ask the teacher for clarity concerning the slides presentation project.
Students will be made aware that the rubric identifies what is needed to achieve the maximum amount of
points on the assignment.
5. Students will start by clicking onto the Cells Alive link located on the instructions. Students will navigate
this site to get more familiar with cell organelle functions.
6. Students will also have access to an interactive cells chart located at the following link Cells Interactive
Chart.
7. Next, students will play the game at the Cells Game and Cell Activities links.
8. Then students will visit two links, Cell City Analogies and Cell Analogies Quizlet so that can become
familiar with what to do.
9. Students will then revisit the rubric choose a city to use in their presentation
10. Each student will create a Google Slides presentation.
11. Slide Presentations will be uploaded to Google Classroom.

Rubric Description This is a rubric that will give students the ability to development their project along guidelines that will allow them
to get the maximum amount of points. Also, it will give the teacher a way to provide meaningful feedback for their
presentations.

The setting of this lesson is a classroom and the lesson will be conducted by a special education teacher at a suburban, Title One middle
school in Griffin, Georgia. The whiteboard will be used to show how to start the lesson, summarize the rubrics, and discuss activity
requirements. Chromebook cart will be used for the class, and each student will have their own Google Chromebook.

Participants in this activity will be one seventh grade classroom. The lesson will be taught one day to one class. The age group of the
students used for this class is 12-14. The class is composed of 20 general education students and 6 special education students. Seventy
percent of the class are economically disadvantaged. The ethnic different groups within the class include African American, White,
Hispanic, and Multiracial students. All students within the class speak English and have different skill levels and learning styles. A
large portion of the class prefer learning that incorporates visuals and manipulatives.
