Origins of

Indirect Measurement
Indirect measurement allows
you to use properties of
similar polygons to find
distances or lengths that are
difficult to measure directly .
The angles of the reflection
in the mirror are the same so
the triangles are similar by
AA sim .
Similar triangles can be used
to measure distance or
heights that are difficult to
measure in a traditional .
Our Purpose
We will be
calculating the
height of an
object that is
too tall to
measure
directly. We
chose the pole.
We will use 3
methods of
indirect
measurement
to measure the
same object.
This will allow
us to compare
our answers
and determine
whether our
methods are
reliable.
Method #1
Data:Overlapping
Shadows
Description: How did you create these triangles?
We create this triangle by measuring the shadow of
the pole and the shadow of the person. We also
measured the persons height..

What makes them similar?

To be similar the angles must be congruent and/or
the sides must be proportional.

How does their similarity allow you to make

proportion? We set up the angles to be proportional.

What did you measure and include in your

proportion?
My group measured the shadow of the pole, shadow
of the person, and the height of the person.
Method #2 Proportion

height of pole shadows of pole

_____________=_____________
height of person shadows of person

x 134in
______=______
59in 30in
Method #3 Data
Description:
This picture is
when rosemary
and her team
are measuring
how long the
shadow is
when she looks
at the top of
the pole and
measures it
when its at 0.
Method #4 Proportion

person height shadow

___________ = ________
pole height shadow

x 55ft 6in
-------=---------
52ft 42in 55ft 6in
Method #5 Data
Description:
In this picture we
measured
Rosemarys
shadow with the
pole shadow . Our
degree was 7.
From Rosemary to
the pole it was
666in. You can see
our math on slide
9.
Method #6 Proportion

pole height Persons shadow

______________ = ___________
Persons height poles shadow

x 666 in
-------=-------
55in 666in

Conclusion
Do you think the method is reliable? Were
your results reasonable? How did you decide?
My group and I think this method is reliable
because people have used this method for
many years and has proven to be useful.

Do you think indirect measurement is useful?

Yes, its useful because it helps you find the
height and how long the shadows is and help
you get a answer of measurements.

Have you found any global connections for

indirect measurement?
Yes, we have found a global connection. We
can measure all kind of things thanks to
indirect measurement.
