WONDERLA AMUSEMENT PARK
BANGALORE
(11 kV SUBSTATION)

DEPARTMENT OF EEE

IV REPORT 2016

2.1 INTRODUCTION

Wonderla Holidays is a leading amusement park designing and operating

company in India headquartered near Bidadi, 28 kilometers from Bangalore. Wonderla
has 55 land and water-based rides.
The park features a wide variety of attractions including land rides, water rides, a
musical fountain and laser shows, a virtual reality shows etc. Wonderla Bangalore has a
full-fledged dance floor with a twist: electronically controlled rain showers. Wonderla
also has attractions specially designed for children, and these are gentle yet unusual like a
kiddies free fall ride. It uses solar-heated water for all its pools during winter.
Wonderla has conference facilities for up to 1,000 persons, and features five
restaurants with a total seating capacity of 1,150. It has locker rooms with over 2,350
lockers and restrooms and showers. The park also features a first aid facility and a paging
system.
Wonderla, Bangalore has been ranked 1st in India and 7th best in Asia by Trip
advisor for 2014, the highest for any Amusement park in India.

2.2 ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

The supply from Karnataka State Electricity Board (KSEB) is given to BESCOM
(Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited) for power distribution to eight districts in
Karnataka. The company covers three operating regions- Bengaluru Metropolitan Area Zone,
Bengaluru Rural Area Zone and Chitradurga Zone.

Supply to Wonderla comes from BESCOM. There is only one incomer to the
Wonderla substation. The outgoing feeders are for two places one is to the park and the
other one is to the resort.

2.2.1 TRANSFORMER
The most important component of a substation is a power transformer. The power
transformer is required to step down the 11kV voltage to lower voltages.

Rating: 2000 kVA, 11kV/433V Transformer

The transformer used here is of oil- cooled type. Its input is 11 kV and output is
normal 3 phase 415 V. The transformer is placed indoor. On load tap changing is provided
in the transformer for proper voltage regulation of the transformer. This is chosen as
switching off the transformer during tap changing is not allowed. The tap selectors are
arranged in circular form inside the tank. If voltage level goes below 11 kV, a switching pulse
is created. A mechanical switching process is then activated. The transformers transmission
ratio is set to a new value in order to compensate the voltage drop.

Explosion Pipe

The losses in the transformer and interterm shorting causes high temperature rise. Due
to the high pressure developed, the two diaphragms provided in the explosion pipe will
explode and oil in the tank will be thrown out through the pipe. Hence this pipe is provided
for protection against excessive pressure.

Silica Gel Breather

At low oil temperature, the volume of the oil is decreased which causes air to enter
the conservator tank. The natural air always consists of more or less moisture in it. This
moisture can mix up with the transformer oil if it is allowed to enter the transformer. This can
cause harm to the transformer if it is not properly removed.

If oil moisture increases, the moisture is suck by the silica gel and after lot of
absorption, it turns blue. Then it need to be replaced.

Marshalling Box
It is the master control for the protective devices. This is a panel with a door, part of
which is glass, allowing visibility of the instruments and their readings. This houses
indicating instruments.

This box has mainly two dials- one indicating the oil temperature and the other one
indicating the winding temperature.

Fig: Marshalling box

Conservator tank
It is a cylindrical tank mounted on a supporting structure on the roof of the
transformer main tank. The main function of the conservator tank is to provide adequate
space for expansion of oil inside the transformer. When transformer is loaded and when the
ambient temperature rises, the volume of oil inside the transformer increases. A conservator
tank provides adequate space for its expansion.

This tank has a dial that shows the oil level. If oil goes below a minimum level,
dripping occurs and hence it need to be checked regularly. Also oil filtration is done
occasionally to remove carbon content formed due to temperature rise.

2.2.2 GENERATOR
Three diesel generators are provided in order to supply power in case of power failure.
Two of them are of 1010 kVA and the third one is of 500 kVA.They are non-salient pole
synchronous machines with a rated speed of 1500 rpm. These generators have an in-house
capacity of 2500 kWh.Prime mover used is diesel engine. Forced air cooling using fan is
used. Heat from the other parts of the machine is removed by circulating cool water. The
generators are provided with a sound proof, anechoic covering. In the generator room there is
an electric mat that provides isolation from earth and hence prevent any occurrence of shock.

2.3 DETAILS ABOUT THE VARIOUS RIDES

2.3.1 FERRIS WHEEL 60M

This Ferris wheel offers Wonderla Amusement Rides the classic family ride. Its
imposing size and lighting make it an absolute crowd-pullers on every festival and in any
theme park. With spectacular views, visitors enjoy a tasty, convenient and safe driving
experience.

A special feature is the design: 4 instead of the usual 8 poles ensure greater
transparency and a more elegant look. Special cable carrier in the spike shape let the
individual pods hang free and allow an unobstructed view for each passenger. The passenger
gondolas are suitable due to their closed design also for smaller passengers and offer through
the large windows all around perfect visibility in all weather conditions.

Eight energy-efficient electric motors drive the Ferris wheel by friction wheels and
let it silently hovering in the sky. At night, turn extremely economical and durable LED
lights the Ferris wheel in a sparkling sea of lights. In addition, the LED lights offer the
opportunity to color change, so that this attraction presents ever new.
