Tips for Beginner Structural

Designers
In the past, I have passed through various types of small to medium raise
concrete buildings. I have encountered so many problems and get lessons for
each new project I designed and prepared the structural shop drawings.

In this post, I will share some important tips that I have learned
while working in many structural design projects.

1. The client should be clear and nothing to be assumed

initially, try to get all the information needed to start the
project design work. Commonly, you need to know the
project purpose and the location conditions "soil report",
the materials to be used depending on the available
resources, as well as the budget of the project and the
level of construction accuracy and quality control.

2. Contact the Project Architect to understand the Arch.

drawings and to know the requirements that impact the
structural system.

3. While studying the Arch. drawings, many important

things to be taken into consideration such as: Shafts
openings, Stairs and their relationships with
beneath/above floor, the Arch. floors levels and
converting them to S.S.L (F.F.L- finishing thickness), the
elevators cores locations and entrance relationship with
the building.

4. Before establishing the columns proposal, the structural

system has to be selected in cooperation with the
Architect and the Client.

5. Start the Structural Drawings by setting the required

drawings, their titles and series numbers so at the end,
the list of structural drawings is to be submitted as the
structural package.

6. In the AutoCAD file of the project, include the Arch.

Drawings so you compare them while working in
columns proposal and other structural elements.

7. To be more efficient in using AutoCAD, starting from

previous templates of old projects is a good and faster
idea. Put each floor Arch plan in front of the structural
plan of the same floor. Establish separate columns layout
for each floor and include all notes regarding to changes
in columns, planted or stopped columns.

8. When putting each plan, try putting them equally spaced

with known and common number so when copying form
one plan to the other, you will be able to copy without
base-point and just insert the space between the
plans, check the simple illustration below.
1. Always before starting modelling the project, start

by drawing slabs layout and columns of each floor and

then study the changes of columns in each floor. The
borders of slabs is to be taken form the Arch. drawings
and make sure that it covers both beneath and above
floors.

2. Try to have an archiving system so eventually you

submit a work package and you still have the

source of your work so you can get there easily if you are
asked to submit of resubmit any project

attachments to the client. check the design process

flowchart below.

1. prepare the design calculation sheets and notes step by

step starting from the design criteria and continue

developing it until the end of the project.

2. Whatever software that you are using for modeling,

drafting or calculations, always have a ready copy for

submission to the client.

3. Try using new technologies in your design such as BIM

technology so you will be up-to-date as the construction
industry works around you.

4. The general notes have to be read at least three times

and make sure of each point so they comply with the
design and the drawings

All the points above is to be updated in future depending on what come to my

mind or techniques that I remember as well as your comments and notes.
