toavoidtravelthroughthecenterofasolidconductor,limitingitselfto
conductionnearthesurface.Thiseffectivelylimitsthecrosssectional
conductorareaavailabletocarryalternatingelectronflow,increasingthe
resistanceofthatconductorabovewhatitwouldnormallybefordirect

Theelectricalresistanceoftheconductorwithallitscrosssectionalarea
inuseisknownastheDCresistance,theACresistanceofthesame
conductorreferringtoahigherfigureresultingfromtheskineffect.Asyou
cansee,athighfrequenciestheACcurrentavoidstravelthroughmostof
theconductorscrosssectionalarea.Forthepurposeofconducting
current,thewiremightaswellbehollow!

Insomeradioapplications(antennas,mostnotably)thiseffectis
exploited.Sinceradiofrequency(RF)ACcurrentswouldnttravel
throughthemiddleofaconductoranyway,whynotjustusehollowmetal
rodsinsteadofsolidmetalwiresandsavebothweightandcost?(Figure
below)MostantennastructuresandRFpowerconductorsaremadeof
hollowmetaltubesforthisreason.
