Snowdonia Mr Smith automa bot

This solo variant for Snowdonia is presented with the blessing of Tony Boydell, and was
inspired by the Automa method introduced by Morten Monrad Pederson in games such as
Viticulture, Between Two Cities, and Scythe.
With these rules you will be playing against an automa robot player, or bot, known as the
Snowdon Mountain Tramroad and Hotels Company Ltd, or 'SMTHCoBOT' (lets call him Mr
Smith for short!).
Set up is the same as for a standard solo game, with the addition of playing pieces and cubes
for Mr Smith, and a special deck of 32 automa bot cards for Mr Smiths actions. You will also
need the first player marker.
After set-up is complete, the rules for play are as follows.
1. Mr Smith will always go first (except as outlined below). Draw one automa bot card and
place two or three of Mr Smiths workers on the Action spaces indicated on the card. Some
cards also move the Surveyor one space up the mountain.
2. The player then places his two (or three) workers after Mr Smiths workers have been
placed.
3. The player can gain the first player marker for one turn only by:
Placing a worker in the Action A space 2 after Mr Smith places a worker in space 1, or
Placing a second worker in Action A space 2 after placing a worker in Action A space 1.
The player cannot place one worker on Action A space 2 alone another worker must be
on Action A space 1.
4. When the player is first player, they place one worker only before drawing a card for Mr
Smith, and place their second worker after Mr Smiths workers are placed. After all workers
are placed, the first turn marker returns to Mr Smith for the next turn (the player cannot be
the first player for two consecutive turns).
NB If the automa card calls for a worker placement on a single-action Action space (i.e. C,
D or F) after the player has placed a worker there when playing as first player, the automa
worker is instead placed on Action space G for a Surveyor move
Action Resolution
5. Action resolution takes place in order. Action resolution is normal for the player. Mr Smith
never collects resources, and never builds or converts from Actions. If Mr Smith has the F
action (picking up a Contract Card), he picks up the highest value card from the three on
display. (If there is a tie for highest value, take the left-most card of the two tied cards) These
contract cards are collected for use in end of game scoring. (Mr Smith does not use any of
the bonus actions on the contract cards.)
6. The game still digs and collects rubble during foggy weather, but Mr Smith does not collect
the rubble from this, nor gains any track laid this way.
The player can gain the first player marker for one turn only by:
Placing a worker in the Action A space 2 after Mr Smith places a worker in space 1, or
Placing a second worker in Action A space 2 after placing a worker in Action A space 1.
The player cannot place one worker on Action A space 2 alone another worker must be on
Action A space 1.
7. (Advanced Hard Automa rule: Mr Smith is still able to collect rubble and lay track during
foggy weather.)
Event Resolution
8. When an event takes place after a white cube is drawn, these affect Mr Smith in the
following way:
Rubble is collected by Mr Smith as per the game event rules (e.g. if the digging rate is 2, Mr
Smith will collect rubble from two spaces - track or station) except if it is foggy, when the
rubble is returned to the stock. Keep the collected rubble by Mr Smiths play area for use
with Contract cards at the end.
Track is laid by the game for Mr Smith as normal place a cube on the completed track for
Smith for end of game scoring except if it is foggy, when no cube is placed. In addition, if the
completion of track also resulted in removal of rubble, Mr Smith acquires that rubble for his
collection as well! Again if it is foggy, no rubble is collected by Mr Smith it is returned to
the stock.
If a station event occurs, place a black disc on the next incomplete station card. (This will
score a number of points for Mr Smith and count for 1 station for any Contract Card
requiring stations.)
9. End of game is triggered as normal, and scoring for both the player and Mr Smith is as
normal except for Stations where Mr Smith will score 2 points for each unbuilt space in a
station where a black disc is placed. Note that there is no score from station excavation
spaces that were excavated by the game.
10. The player will need to (honestly) compile the maximum score for Mr Smith on the
contract cards collected by Mr Smith, based on the number of tracks completed, stations
scored, and number of rubble cubes collected.
