Lesson: Area with Pixel Art

________________________________________________________________________

Objective:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.MD.C.6 Measure areas by counting unit squares

Students will create a pixilated image of their choice on graphing

paper. After creating and coloring their image, students will count the
squares inside their image to calculate the area. Student images may be
as complex or as simple as they desire.

measurement.

A square with side length 1 unit, called "a unit square," is said to have "one square
unit" of area, and can be used to measure area.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.MD.C.5.B
A plane figure which can be covered without gaps or overlaps by n unit squares is said
to have an area of n square units.

Lesson Outline

1.Place the graphing paper under the

document camera for students to see. Tell
students that we are going to mix math
and art! Explain that images are displayed
on screens using pixels which are tiny
squares or color. Together they form an
image.

2.Im going to make a character on my graph

paper as if he was made of large pixels.
See if you can guess who he is! (draw

Kirby)

3.How could we find the area of the picture I

just drew?(Student response: by counting
the squares inside!) Thats right! We can
find the area of Kirby by counting the
squares inside him. (Have students could
the squares on the example to come up
with an area.)

4.You will be making an image of your choice

using the graph paper. Once you have
finished your image, we will find the area
by counting the squares. Remember, each
square is one square unit. Hand out graph
paper and allow students time to work,
helping as needed.

6.Once their image is done, have them count

the squares inside to find the area of their
image. On the bottom of the page,
students write A=

7.Student art can then be hung up in the

classroom as a cute display! Students love
pixel art!
