as employers struggle to find experienced
specialists with the right skills.

According to a study by the Ontario Society

employers across a variety of sectors

of internationally trained engineers (ITEs),
is impeded by employer recruiting and job

Canadian employers of a Canadian license

the employment landscape

More Canadian employers are looking for engineers who not only satisfy the
technical skills and experience requirements of a position but who also have
excellent verbal and written communication skills and are collaborative and
independent at the same time. Thats a tall order especially as many senior
engineers who possess these capabilities are nearing retirement. Recent grads
and ITEs struggle to gain the experience they need and once they do, find
theyre unable to move between sectors. Employers need to be willing to train
and develop capable new engineers to become the experienced professionals
they need and then retain them by offering competitive compensation and
opportunities for growth and development.

According to the World Economic Forum, were on the cusp of a Fourth

Industrial Revolution, where developments like artificial intelligence and
machine learning, robotics, nanotechnology, 3D printing and genetics
and biotechnology are all building on and amplifying one another...Smart
systems homes, factories, farms, grids or entire cities will help tackle
problems ranging from supply chain management to climate change.4
That explains the increasing demand (and competition) for technicians and
engineers with the appropriate skills in automation, instrumentation and
controls, and industrial control systems.

Across the country, our staffing experts hear the same refrain: the time is
right for employers to redefine the meaning of talent acquisition in their
organizations and to invest in their best people in order to attract and
retain them. The key to organizational success for Canadian companies in
2017 will be creating stability while remaining agile and responsive.

Alberta
The engineering sector in Alberta struggled through 2016 as oil and
gas prices remained low and the province was hit by dramatic fires and
flooding, which caused the oil industry to stop production temporarily
in the Fort McMurray region. There is debate over whether or not
the average time a

contraction with economists predicting oil and gas and their support
activities continuing their decline.17

According to our research, hiring engineering talent in Alberta is slightly easier than across Canada,
with a hiring scale of 23 compared to 35 for the national average. The average time a position is posted
is 40 days18.

The roles most in demand in Alberta are project engineer, project controller, superintendent and
operational facility engineer. Based on our statistics, employers in the province are looking for engineers
with knowledge in design software (AutoCAD), quality assurance and control, and technical support.19

Our staffing experts in the field report salaries have dropped since 2009. Sectors involved in renewable
energy, utilities, power generation, construction and public sector infrastructure initiatives funded by
provincial and federal governments now make up the majority of hiring in the province. In other sectors,
engineers involved in operations or maintenance are being hired or retained. In fact, organizations are
hanging on to their best people and hiring those already employed elsewhere, as opposed to bringing in
new, untested talent.

British Columbia
While other western provinces have experienced an economic decline due to the fall of oil prices, the
BC economy is expected to be positive. This is due, in part, to an anticipated improvement of the U.S.
economy against the lower Canadian dollar resulting in export growth. Its predicted Ontarios and BCs
economies will lead the country in terms of economic growth between now and the end of 2017.21

A strong BC economy is good news for engineers in the region as their skills are required for those
industries associated with large-scale projects and programs that affect the provinces growth and
development. While employment opportunities will come as a result of retirements, more engineers are
working beyond retirement age.22 With that in mind, employers especially in southeastern BC could have
difficulty finding qualified engineering specialists in the next ten years.23

Ontario
As they were last year, high in demand skills sets will continue to be required in Ontario through
2017. These include skills like mechanical design software (AutoCAD and SolidWorks CAD) and quality
engineering skills. In recent years, Ontario experienced a candidates market, meaning fewer candidates
for more open positions. This is especially true for mid-level to senior roles where there is limited
supply of engineers with the experience to fill those positions. We see hiring spikes in some sectors like
manufacturing, requiring engineers to fill technical roles that include robotics and automation.

Our staffing experts in the field report an increase in demand for soft skills after technical capabilities.
Engineering professionals will also be required to develop cross-discipline skills, like electro-mechanical
capabilities. This trend is likely to increase into 2017.

Quebec
In Quebec finding engineering talent is significantly harder than
any other province with a hiring scale of 50 against 35 nationally.
This could be due to a smaller pool of candidates per job opening
(21 in Quebec against 28 nationally). Another reason could be
because salaries are much lower than across Canada with a median there are 21 candidates
salary for the province of $64,55029. per job opening
The average posting duration is 28 days. The positions most in
in Quebec against
demand are electrical engineer, mechanical engineer and civil 28 nationally
engineer. The province has a lower unemployment rate relative
to its neighbours, which could be due to an increase of business
investment in the province and the lower Canadian dollar.30

What this translates to for employers is that top candidates may be harder to find. In many cases,
candidates are fielding multiple offers for employment. Employers who respond timely to staffing
opportunities with competitive salaries and creative options designed to attract and retain candidates,
such as flexible scheduling and growth opportunities, will find their staffing efforts successful. In fact,
it will be increasingly difficult to find highly skilled, experienced engineering specialists in 2017; these
candidates will move more frequently between organizations in search of the best compensation and
benefits. This makes the effort to retain top performers essential for organizations across all sectors.

Engineers in Quebec are required to be bilingual and have industry specific knowledge and experience in
design software like AutoCAD, SolidWorks CAD and CATIA.
