Design changes

This service information covers progressive changes that have been introduced in production. Some of the
changes affect repairs and troubleshooting and new special tools have also been added.

New copper sleeve for unit injector

A new copper sleeve has been introduced on D12 engines. The copper sleeve is narrower at the bottom,
giving space for a larger flow of coolant and improved cooling.
The copper sleeve has been introduced from engine number 249682.

Gasket, cylinder head

A new type of gasket has been introduced. The gasket is made of steel, with vulcanised rubber seals for oil
and coolant passages. The new gasket replaces all earlier versions as a spare part.
The gasket has been introduced from engine number 251793.

Cylinder liner/piston

D12C420, D12C460 (Mark 3)

The cylinder liner has been modified under the liner collar, so that the upper guide and sealing rings are
higher up. This change provides improved cooling of the upper part of the cylinder liner and space for
improved coolant circulation.
The cylinder liner and piston/ring set have been introduced from engine number 250000.

Engine block

Changes made to the cylinder block.

A tapped hole has been added to the outsides of the engine block. A number of tapped holes have also
been removed.

Some of the coolant passages to the cylinder head (2) have been removed to provide improved cooling.
Plugs for drill holes to the oil cooler have been removed in conjunction with the introduction of the new
cylinder head gasket.
There is a tapped hole (3) on the right-hand side of the cylinder block, adjacent to the oil filter bracket
mounting, that must be plugged (D12C, D12C Mark 3).

The cylinder block has been introduced from engine number 244671.

Sump

A new sump has been introduced. The sump is made of injection moulded plastic. The seal against the
cylinder block consists of a moulded rubber strip located in a groove in the sump. The sump is attached to the
cylinder block with 16 spring-loaded screws. The drain plug is fixed in a tapped, cast steel reinforcement.

The sump has been introduced on FM and FH trucks at two different points in time. The plastic sump is not
fitted on trucks with op. class. 3, e.g. trucks used for construction site work.

Oil cooler/cap

The cooling capacity of the oil cooler has been increased by adding an extra plate. The new oil cooler has
seven plates. This increases the depth of the oil cooler, resulting in a modification of the oil cooler cap.

Note: The cap for the oil cooler with six plates has exterior fins.
The cap for oil cooler with seven plates is smooth on the outside.

Note: The oil cooler with six plates must not be used together with the new, smooth sided cap, since that would give the oil cooler
lower capacity.
