(NPS) is a Canadian company that has proprietary

technology for the extraction of melanin pigment from plants. Melanin is a material that
has a high promise for use in many applications. The scarcity and high prices of
melanin, made by other melanin manufacturers, have hindered its widespread use in
different industries. The main practice in production of melanin used to be the extraction
of melanin from animal sources (e.g. Sepia Squid & bovine eyes) and making melanin
via chemical synthesis. These processes usually require sophisticated equipment and

engineering applications of melanins as organic-conductors are actively sought after.

In view of the problems associated with increased UV levels, caused by the global
environmental change, the need for UV (Ultra Violet) and HEV (High Energy Visible)
protection is growing. Melanin is the most powerful protection against UV and HEV light.
It is nature's answer to the undesirable effects of sunlight. Therefore melanin is mostly
used as an active photo-protective ingredient in cosmetics and sunscreens. Producers
of these products also make use of other useful properties of melanin including its
antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and metal-chelating properties. Use of melanin for
human-application is considered safe, nontoxic and non-allergenic. After-all melanins
are molecules that inherently and naturally exist in various parts of the human body (e.g.
the skin, hair, brain, liver and ears).

One of the best known applications of melanin is its incorporation into sunglasses;
offering superior UV & HEV protection as well as glare reduction with no chromatic
aberration. NPS has chemically engineered its melanin for direct incorporation into
finished and cast plastics while retaining both of its basic abilities of high absorption of
UV and HEV light and its action as an antioxidant.
