BPM Defined
A management discipline for
improving cross-functional business
processes.
The methods and technology tools
used to manage and optimize
business processes.
Utility of Business Intelligence
Integration in BPM

Key to visibility in business processes

Process monitoring and reporting
Process analysis and optimization
Predictive analytics

May contribute to process agility

Trigger processes
Automate steps based on prior decisions
Suggest decision for human task

By combining BI with the rule- based approach associated with

BPM, one can monitor the decision-making process from an
analytical perspective. Errors in business rules will be detected
sooner, and rules can be changed as necessary, either
automatically or manually.
Old Way Of BPM BI Integration

Export BPM statistics to BI

Full BI functionality:
Dashboards
Reporting
Predictive analytics
Shared enterprise BI platform
Integrate with data from other systems
Additional cost and implementation
complexity
No Real Time Monitoring
Layers Of BPM BI Convergence

BI Integrated BPM: The integration offers users new and

consistent insights along the whole business process. A user
in this context means both:

a) Business users that are part of the business process get

access to relevant information and reports that increase
the efficiency of the process, and

b) Business process owners get an insightful analytics of the

Typically limited functionality:

Real-time dashboards
Reporting of performance metrics
Limited to process statistics rather than
business statistics
May be lower cost, although usually
still requires a separate data store

BI Embedded BPM: BI becomes an embedded and

integral part of the business process itself.

e.g. As an example, lets think of a manager,

triggered by an email notification to take some
budget decision, and who gets the relevant
information and analysis, tailored for his decision,
already embedded within the email notification. Each
business process step provides the user with
contextual, relevant insights, information, analysis or
even predictions that are useful to execute the
process with highest quality and business efficiency.

BI Guided BPM: business processes will

become intelligent themselves. Business
Intelligence will guide the business process
at every step and trigger the best possible
next steps.

e.g. Based On the signals from some sensor

tagged equipment the process intelligence will
decide which spare parts or services to order,
which field engineer to schedule or call for a
budget decision meeting.

Self-learning decisions within

processes:
Process statistics captured with BI
Statistics analyzed and fed back to
inform business rules
Business rules modify process behavior
BR + BI = decision management
