Pronouns

A Pronoun is a word used in place of a noun or of more than one noun.

Example: The high school graduate accepted the diploma proudly. She had
worked hard for it.
-The pronoun she takes the place of the noun graduate. The pronoun it takes
the place of the noun diploma.

Antecedent- The word whose place a pronoun takes is called its antecedent.
In the above example, the noun graduate is the antecedent of she, and
diploma is the antecedent of it.

Note: A pronoun may also take the place of another pronoun.

Example: Some of the students wore red sweaters. They were celebrating
Valentines Day.

-The pronoun they takes the place of the pronoun some.

There are several kinds of pronouns: personal (which includes the possessive
and reflexive forms), demonstrative, Intensive, Indefinite, Relative and
Interrogative

Personal Pronouns:

Possessive pronouns- imply ownership.


Examples: My, mine, his, its, their, theirs, your, yours, her, hers, our, ours.

Reflexive pronouns- ends in self or selves and refers to another noun or


pronoun in the sentence.
Example: Myself, himself, herself, ourselves, themselves, yourself, itself,
yourselves
Sentence Example: The dog bite itself

Demonstrative pronouns- point out a particular person or thing. When


used before nouns, however, they are considered adjectives (these books,
those houses, that flag).
Example: This, these, that, those.
Sentence Example 1: These are her books.
Sentence Example 2: That is the road she took.

Intensive pronouns- refers back to another noun or pronoun in the


sentence to emphasize it
Examples: myself, himself, herself, themselves, itself, yourself, yourselves,
and ourselves
Sentence Example 1: Jim bought himself a shirt.
Sentence Example 2: She bought herself a shirt

Indefinite Pronouns- refer generally, not specifically, to persons, places, or


things.
Commonly used indefinite pronouns: All, another, any, anybody, anyone,
both, each, either, everybody, everyone, everything, few, many, more,
much, neither, nobody, none, no one, one, several, some, somebody,
someone, such.
Sentence Example 1: Nobody was there to welcome him.

Relative pronouns- used to introduce subordinate clauses (clauses that


cannot stand alone as sentences).
Examples: Who, whose, that, whom, which.
Sentence Example 1: The book that you gave me was the one I wanted.
Sentence Example 2: The woman whose name is one the program is running
for mayor.

Interrogative pronouns- used in questions.


Examples: Who, which, whose, whom, what
Sentence Example 1: What will you give her now?

POSSESSIVE PRONOUNS

Choose the possessive pronoun that correctly completes the sentence.

Intensive Pronouns
An intensive pronoun uses reflexive pronouns to add emphasis to the subject
of the sentence.
Reflexive Pronouns include; Myself, Yourself, Himself, Herself, Ourselves,
Themselves

careful to not get them confused with adjectives. Heres an example:
-Little is known about her past. (pronoun acting as a subject)
-See the little dog. (adjective describing dog)

I went on another trip last week. Few have visited the park I saw, because
everyone visits Yellowstone. I saw something moving in the woods, but could
not see it clearly. Then there was more movement and everybody saw it.
Either could have been a bear or both were just the wind. Nobody could
figure it out, but we had many guesses. The scenery there was gorgeous;
one could see for miles. Anybody would love that one view of the valley
because nothing is more beautiful.
Relative Pronouns
Relative pronouns introduce relative clauses, which are a type of dependent
clause.
Relative Pronouns include; Who, Whom, Whose, That, Which, Whoever,
Whomever, Whichever
