Vectors and Force Resultants

Ans 1.

The two set of forces form 2 couples as they are equal in magnitude and opposite in direction.

Hence, the resultant force = 0 ,

Each of the couple so formed has an associated moment about the x-direction.

Moment due to pair of vertical force each of magnitude , = (anticlockwise).

Moment due to pair of Inclined forces each of magnitude F,= cos 30

3
= 2
(anti-clockwise)

The resultant moment, , is given by

3 3
= + = ( + )
2 2

Ans 2.

The couple due to 100N force acts about the x-direction and in the anti-clockwise direction (taking
anti-clockwise negative), is given by:

= 100 0.2 = 20 Nm

80N lies on a plane which is inclined to the y-z plane, hence the moment has components in both y
and z directions

cos 30) = (6.77 11.72

= 80 0.18 cos 20( sin 30 ) Nm

The couple due to 120N force acts about the z-direction and in the anti-clockwise direction (taking
anti-clockwise negative) and is given by:

= 120 (0.1 + 0.2) cos 45 = 25.5 Nm

Hence the resultant force is given by:

= + + = (20 6.77 37.2 )Nm

Ans 3.

Let the force exerted by the cable BD on the support D be .

1/3
Magnitude of tension in Cable BD, = 385

coordinate of D = (0, 510, 280)

coordinate of B = (480, 0, 600)

unit vector along cable tension TBD = (480i 510j + 320k)/770

X component = 480/770 385 = 240 N

Y component = (-510)/770 385 = -255 N

Z component = 320/770 385 = 160 N

Ans 4.

Force along x-direction, Fx = -120N

Force along y-direction, Fy = 0

Force along z-direction, Fz = -160N

Therefore resultant force of the system, R at A = -120 + 0 160

= -120 160

Magnitude of the resultant of the force system = (120)2 + (160)2

= 200 N

Moment about X-axis, Mx = Moment of the motor weight + applied couple at the shaft

= -160 0.2 +25

= -7Nm (clockwise -ve, anticlockwise +ve)

Moment about Y-axis, My = Moment of the thrust on shaft + Moment of the motor weight

= -120 (.100-.075) +160 .075

= 9Nm

Moment about Z-axis, Mz = Moment of the thrust on shaft

= 120 0.200

= 24Nm

Resultant moment of the force system M, at A = -7 +9+24

Ans 5.

At O, Resultant force, = F -3F

Moment about y-axis = F 2a

Moment about z-axis = -F a

o = 2a F a F
Resultant moment,

Dot product of and o = (F -3F ) (2a F a F) = 3aF2 0

o =

Therefore and
o are not perpendicular.

Therefore o is resolved into components

1, along the direction of and
2, perpendicular
to the direction of R

Hence 1 +

Assume that the wrench resultants pass through P (0, y, z)

2 = r R = (y +z ) (F -3F)
Therefore

= - Fy + Fz 3Fy

1 = Moment along R

= M1 12

Equating co-efficient of either sides of 1 +

1
We have, -3Fy + = 0,
10

2Fa = Fz ,
31
-Fy = - Fa
10

Solving the above three equations,

y = a/10

z = 2a

M1 =

The line of action of resultant R passes through (0, a/10, 2a) and the wrench moment is

1 = 10 ( 3 )
