6 Million Girls Scouts stand to benefit from DOE

Education Programs

Taguig City. Director Amelia G. de Guzman of the Energy Research and

Testing Laboratory Services (ERTLS) and Ms. Helen B. Arias, Chief of the
Consumer Welfare and Promotion Office (CWPO) welcomed the Girls Scouts
of the Philippines (GSP) National President, Mrs. Susan R. Locsin together
with Mesdames Bella Celeste A.Velasco, GSP Communications Director;
Ginnie W. Oribiana, GSP Program Director; Priscilla G. Cabanatan, GSP
National Program Committee Member; and Ms. Jade D. Villanueva, GSP
Program Technical Assistant to the Energy Center on February 20, 2017 in
behalf of Secretary Alfonso G. Cusi.

GSP, with its established legacy in honing the girls potentials to be the
countrys future leaders, employs a holistic approach by exposing the
students to more diversified fields, now to include energy and the
environment.

Initially, a tour to the different laboratories under ERTLS, was organized by

the ERTLS and CWPO for the GSP Officers to gain better appreciation of the
great complexity of scientific principles embodied in energy testing protocols
and standards, which are the cornerstones upon which energy policies and
programs are built.

Ms. Angela P. Revilla, Supervising Science Research Specialist (SRS) and a

Geologist at the Paleontology Section, together with her colleagues in the
Petrology and Palynology Sections briefed the group on the various
equipment for processing and analyzing rock samples, petroleum, coal,
processed fuels, and geothermal waters.

On the other hand, Ms. Marietta V. Gomez, Supervising SRS, explained the
important parameters for determining the quality of coal and other solid
fuels and for analyzing waters, geothermal gases, and other related
materials.

The group then proceeded to the Petroleum Section and Processed Fuels
Section housed at the National Petroleum Testing Laboratory (NPTL) Building
for a short overview of the various tests conducted on gasoline, diesel, and
other petroleum products collected from retail outlets, refineries, bulk
storage and terminals nationwide.
Mr. Isagani C. Soriano, OIC-Division Chief of the Lighting and Appliance
Testing Laboratory and his staff elaborated on the standard testing
procedures for energy performance in support of the National Energy
Efficiency Programs for appliance and equipment, such as: air-conditioners,
refrigerators/freezers, washing machines, television sets, and lighting
systems.

This visit of the GSP Officers thus serves as a prelude to the succeeding
learning activities in anticipation of the 2.6 million GSP members nationwide
who stand to benefit from DOEs various education programs. The students
who will be visiting the Energy Center or the DOE Field Office nearest the
participating schools, will come in batches to get educated on energy
efficiency and conservation, alternative fuels, electric power, upstream and
downstream oil industry, and renewable energy, among others.

More importantly, elementary students who are being molded to become

Energy Smart kids, pledge to practice energy saving measures at home,
while under the DOE-Gender and Development (GAD) Program dubbed as
ENEReady, Grades 9 and 10 students are given orientation thru Career Talks
to break the stereotyping in the energy workforce that energy is a mans
world.

A more sustainable program of GAD called, Girls and Science, Girls in

Science targeting also the Grades 9 and 10 students in selected science
schools, seeks to encourage them to take up courses related to geosciences,
engineering, and related disciplines.

As Sec. Cusi puts it, We are glad that our Director, Ms. Amy de Guzman, an
Outstanding GSP awardee in 1973 and Ms. Helen B. Arias, also a former Girl
Scout, are spearheading these programs and look forward to a more fruitful
partnership with the Girl Scouts of the Philippines. We warmly welcome this
move as a significant step in linking the shared goals of both the government
and the GSP, which will greatly amplify our message of bringing DOE closer
to the public and creating massive awareness on energy.
