Task 1:
Dementia is a global health issue for both the elderly and young that needs the constant charity
work and support of organisations like Sue Ryder to treat its patients. It is an all too common
health concern for the elderly that is - as of yet - untreatable.
We as a production group hope to represent this global issue with care and factual accuracy in
order to help build interest in the foundation.
Production facts:
Production length will be approximately 10 minutes long.
Our production will take a primarily emotional angle - focusing on the effects of
Dementia and the care put into it.
We will be interviewing the carers of patients with Dementia, following them on
the job for potential B-roll and interviewing them on-location.
Interview:
In our interview we wish to gain knowledge of dementia based on past experiences and current
care work. We wish to ask a carer and somebody who either suffers from dementia or someone
with a loved one who suffers from the illness to tell us how dementia has affected their lives.
Linus Rickett: Linus had a grandfather who suffered with dementia. He was very close to his
grandfather and has had first hand experience with how it has affected his family.
Janet Dunn: Janet is the head of the dementia floor at the Arcadia Lodge care home in Henley.
She and several other nurses help care for over 100 patients who suffer from the disease.

Target Audience:
Our target audience will primarily be of a socio-economic class between A and B; they will have
money to spare for charitable spending and will likely be old enough to have family at risk of
contracting onset Dementia. This - whilst potentially heartless sounding - is likely the best place
to come from when creating this advertisement, as it files a smaller but more potentially
dedicated audience for donations.

We came to this conclusion by going to several events hosted by Sue Ryder and noticing that
most of the people who showed up were middle aged with families. We also sent out a survey
asking people if they would be interested in watching a documentary on dementia. The
responses we got back suggested that people under the age of 25 have no interest in the
subject.

We have got permission from Arcadia Lodge to film on their premises but we must find royalty free music
to go with the short film. I have found many free songs on the internet by popular artist however I will have
to see if I am able to use them in the video. Regarding stock footage, we will collect our own when we go
down to the care home.
There are many ethical issues when filming people with dementia seeing as they are easily manipulated.
We also dont want to leave them in a room that they arent familiar to because they might become lost.
We need to be sensitive towards the subject when interviewing the patients. We need to come up with
appropriate questions and tackle the issue in a serious manner. When interviewing the patients, we will
always have a nurse present, so they can escort the patient back to their room.

Being fairly young and detached from older relatives,
i've never experienced the effects of Dementia, nor
had the time to investigate. But for today's program
i've gone too Sue Ryder's Nettlebed Hospice to
interview carers with experience treating the disease.
