Experiment 5: Thermocouple/RTD Measurement

EXPERIMENT 5

THERMOCOUPLE/RTD MEASUREMENTS

1.0 EXPERIMENT PROCEDURES

1.1 Ambient Temperature Measurement

1 Place the near the head the terminal of any of the temperature elements before
every RUN of experiments.

2 Take two readings of the thermometer. Get average of both the readings. Record in
TABLE 1, 2, 3 and 4.

3 This temperature is taken before each of the RUN.

1.2 Temperature Measurement of TE1, TE2, TE3, TT4 and TT5

1. Switch ON the main supply.

2. Check that the pump suction and all pump discharge valve (including MV) are
fully open and all by-pass valve including pump by-pass valve are fully shut.

3. Then, open the by-pass valve (BV) valve beside before the pump start-up.

4. Switch ON the pump (P), shut the pump by-pass (BV) valve and let the water
circulates throughout Tank T1.

5. Fill Tank T1 with water up to the overflow level. If the water is below the
predetermined level limit, the Level Switch (LS) will switch off the pump and
heater.

6. Open the cap of TE1, TE2 and TE3.

7. RUN 1:
i. Set the temperature at 30C.
ii. When it reaches this temperature, take 2 sets of readings and average.
Record in TABLE 1.
iii. Record the mV reading of TE1and TE2 and the resistance for TE3 by
using multimeter. Fig 1.1

8. RUN 2:
i. Change the set point 40C at TI(3)
ii. ON the heater
iii. When it reaches this temperature, take 2 sets of readings and average.
Record in TABLE 2.

Experiment 5: Thermocouple/RTD Measurement

iv. Record the mV reading of TE1and TE2 and the resistance for TE3 by
using multimeter.Fig 1.1

9. RUN 3:
i. Change the set point 50C at TI(3)
ii. ON the heater
iii. When it reaches this temperature, take 2 sets of readings and average.
Record in TABLE 3.
iv. Record the mV reading of TE1and TE2 and the resistance for TE3 by
using multimeter. Fig 1.1

10. RUN 4:
i. Change the set point 60C at TI(3)
ii. ON the heater
iii. When it reaches this temperature, take 2 sets of readings and average.
Record in TABLE 4.
iv. Record the mV reading of TE1and TE2 and the resistance for TE3 by
using multimeter. Fig 1.1

11. Once all the runs area successfully completed, switch OFF the pump and
heater.

12. Wait until the water temperature decreasing to 40. Then open the drain
valve to drain out all the water in Tank T1.

13. Then, refer to section CALCULATION.

3.0 CALCULATIONS

PART 1:

Determination of Actual Signal, mV for TE1 and TE2

Reference ambient temperature rate at temperature gauge, T ref = x C

Referring to the thermocouple tables of the temperature elements, at xC, voltage of a specific
element, VT.f.xC = a mV

Volatge measured at the element, VT.f.xC = b mV

Actual signal, VT.f.xC = a+b mV = ymV

By reffering to the elements thermocouple table, at y mV, the temperature of the element is z C.

Temperature reading from the respective digital indicator: d C.

This temperature is compared to the respective digital indicators reading and temperature
deviation is z-d C.

PART 2:

Determination of Actual Signal for TE3

Temperature reading from the respective indicator; d C

Resistance measured at the element, T.f.dC = b

By referring to the RTDs thermocouple table, at b, the temperature of the element is c C.

This temperature is compared to the respective indicators reading and temperature deviation is c-
d C.
