BOATERS FOR LIFE
IN M O R E T H A N 43 years of marriage,
Cheryl and Ron Roberts havelived onshore
for just five months, in 1987while they
were having another boat built. They have
been on their latest boat home for close to
30 years.
My husband was raised around boats
all of his life, says Cheryl. In high school
he lived on his fathers boat, and hebought
his o w n boat when hewas 19,which helived
on. Muchto her delight, Cheryl found that
she loved living aboard a boat aswell.
Whenwedecidedto start a family, we
brought our son home to the boat from the

divorces,MJ Boyle knew that life doesnt
always goaccordingto plan. The empty
n e s t e r wanted t o p r e p a r e f o r her
retirement,but had no savings or retire
m e n t money.
So she opted to downsize from a
1,600squarefoot rental home to a
204squarefoot t i n y home on
wheels, where she has lived,
parked on an old Christmas
tree farm outside Portland,
Oregon, for m o r e than a
year. She designed the
house, w h i c h weighs
13,800 pounds and cost
TINY HOME
less than $35,000 to build
over the course of 15months, MJ Boyle
and namedit My Empty Nest.
I built it to ensure I have a
home that isfully paid for and that
I canretire in, Boyle says.
With no money to finance the project,
she obtained 22 national and corporate
sponsors, which financed 60 percent of
the build in exchange for social media
exposure in the tiny house movement.

Boyle started by acquiring 18 win
dows andawreckedtrailer, and she made
the floor plans working with guidelines
outlined by the U . S . Department of
Transportation. She designed the living
r o o m and floating storage stairs
around a 19405 credenza, and
the kitchenwas built around
a drainboard sink w i t h
matching 19403 refriger
a t o r and stove. F o r bed
rooms she designed two
lofts made of refurbished
barn wood.
Boyle hired profes
sionals for the framing and
the electrical wiring and to
install the propane gas line, but
she completed the rest of the work
herselfwith the help of friends. She says
the entire house runs off a garden hose
and anextension cord. Expenses, includ
ingrent, electricity, water and WiFi, are
less than $100 amonth.

Cheryl, a former middle school office
manager, and Ron, a retired computer
analyst, both from Southern California,
Were always able to live close enough to
work so that their waterbased home was
never an issue. Weve only been based in
two locations with our boats: Port of Los
Angeles, and Long Beach, California,
Cheryl says.
They typically spent their weekends
motoringthe 26miles from Long Beachto
Catalina Island, and took extended leaves
of absence from work to wend their way
south to Mexico.
Since retiringin 2003, the couple have
spent years traveling on Lazy Days, their
49foot DeFever motor yacht, to Mexico,
Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua and
Panama. Says Cheryl, The best part about
