GENERAL INFORMATION

Topic or Unit of Study: Contractions

Grade/Level: 2nd grade

Instructional Setting: 32 students at tables of six

English, Standard 2c: Use an apostrophe to form contractions and frequently occurring
possessives.

Lesson Objective(s): Given 15 sets of words the students will be make them into
contractions, and use each a sentence getting 10 out of 15 correct.

MATERIALS AND RESOURCES

Instructional Materials: My Contraction Surgery Book, scissors, glue, contraction


video, doctor video, doctor masks
(e.g., manipulatives, tools, reading material, lab equipment, construction paper, scissors, PowerPoint,
guided note templates).

INSTRUCTIONAL PLAN

Sequence of Instructional Procedures/Activities/Events (provide description and


indicate approximate time for each):

1. Student Prerequisite Skills/Connections to Previous Learning:

Students should be able to read and write simple sentences. Students should be
able to cut shapes with scissors.

2. Presentation Procedures for New Information and/or Modeling:

Teacher will explain to the class that contractions are made of two words. Some
of the letters are taken out and replaced with an apostrophe.
3. Guided Practice:

The teacher will write two words on the board and ask students to change them
into contractions. This will be done several times until the students seem to
understand the concept.

Independent Student Practice:

Teacher will explain how to do the My Contraction Surgery Book. Teacher will show
the video https://youtu.be/42-duf3_BZc. Teacher will pass out the My Contraction
Surgery Book, and a doctors mask. Students will work on their own doing surgery
(cutting and pasting words to make contractions).

4. Culminating or Closing Procedure/Activity/Event:

If time permits, the teacher will show the video https://youtu.be/gubPH3WEurg.

Instructional Strategy (or Strategies): Direct instruction, Hands on activity

Differentiated Instruction Accommodations:

The teacher will move around the classroom during the hands on activity and assist
struggling students. Accelerated students who finish early will work on Lexia (a
language arts computer program.)

Use of Technology: Two videos will be shown during this lesson.

Student Assessment/Rubrics: Students will get 10 out of 15 contractions correct in


their My Contractions Surgery Book.
