Lesson Plan 4

Simmons Student: Nick Averill Date: 3/21/17

Learners: Inclusion Name of Lesson: Working on Word
Problems
Grade: 2

1. Curriculum Frameworks/Common Core Addressed

Area: Mathematics
Domain: Operations and Algebraic Thinking
Standard: 2.OA.A.1 Use addition and subtraction within 100 to
solve one- and two-step word problems involving situations of
adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and
comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using drawings
and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent
the problem.

SPED Objectives for Learners:

M.E. will increase his active listening skills by accurately
repeating instructions in his own words in 100% of
opportunities.

2. Lesson Objective/ Purpose

Students will use drawings to break apart and solve word problems for
addition and subtraction within 100 in 100% of opportunities.

3. Teacher Actions/ Pacing

Parts of the lesson

a. Introduction (2 minutes + 3 minutes to transition to rug)

Students will come to the rug with markers, erasers, and

white boards.
Teacher will give student A 5 balloons. Teacher will ask the
class how many balloons student A has. Then, teacher will
give student B 3 balloons. Teacher will ask the class how
many balloons we have in total (8). Then, the teacher will ask
the class how many more balloons student A has than student
B (2).
b. Body of Lesson

Direct Instruction
The teacher will talk about the fact that the class just solved 2
word problems. The teacher will then show the students the
chart with the method for solving word problems (read,
underline key information, create a 20 second picture, find
key phrases, create a number sentence, solve). The teacher
should explain each of the steps and how they help to
understand the problem.

Activity #1 (10 minutes)

Model: The teacher will uncover the word problems that we
just solved written on the board. Then, the teacher will
underline parts of the problem in different colors to show the
students where to look for information within a word problem.
(Underline Student A has 5 balloons in red and Student B
has 3 balloons in blue.) Next, the teacher will draw a 20
second picture (a picture that only takes 20 seconds to draw)
of the information. Then, the teacher will highlight in total
and explain that when we see in total we are creating an
addition problem and that in total is a key phrase. The
teacher will discuss the key phrase table** (hanging on the
board). Teacher will create the problem 5+3=8 using the 20
second picture and key phrase.
Practice: Teacher will uncover the second word problem on the
board (How many more balloons does student A have than
student B?). Students will then go through the same process
to solve the problem with the teacher on their own white
boards (read, underline key information, create a 20 second
picture, find key phrase, create the number sentence, solve).
Practice: The teacher will then uncover a new problem the
students will solve it using the same method on their boards
and show them when they are done. If necessary, a 4th
problem will be available for students to practice the method.

Activity #2 (9 minutes per station +1 minute transitions = 30

minutes)
The teacher will discuss that there will be three stations. One
station will be the math computers as usual, one station will
be working on word problems, and one station they will get to
create their own word problems.
Station 1 (Math Computers)
o Teacher will tell students that they will be expected to keep
quiet and use the headphones while at this station. If they
cant follow those rules, they will have to end the
computer.
Station 2 (Working on Math Problems with Mr. Averill)
o (*M.E.) Students will go through a worksheet to get more
practice with the method. The teacher will use this as an
opportunity to check for understanding in a small group
setting. The teacher will provide the students with extra
instruction in this station and M.E. will repeat instructions
for the different parts of the worksheet in his own words
(data).
Station 3 (Creating Word Problems)
o Students will work in pairs to create word problems using
packets of materials given to them. There will be 4
different packets that the students could rotate to if they
have time. A second teacher will be at this teacher to
ensure that students understand the task.
c. Review key concepts from lesson (2 minutes)
Students will go back to their seats and the teacher will
review that it is important to read word problems multiple
times, then pull out important information to figure out how to
solve the problem.

d. Evaluation procedure for lesson objective/closure (5 minutes)

The teacher will give the students a survey about the lesson
with 2 word problems built into the survey as an assessment.
Teacher will explain that they will have a chance to answer
questions about how much they enjoyed the lesson and show
how much they learned. After they are done they can read
until it is time for the next class.

4. Accommodations

**Utilizing charts such as the key phrases chart and the chart
sequencing the method used (Read, underline key information,
create a 20 second picture, find key phrases, create a math
sentence, solve).
For the Special Education learner the teacher will repeat
instructions as necessary and have the student repeat
instructions in his own words.

5. Materials
White boards, markers, and erasers
Key Phrase chart
Method Sequence chart
Word problems on a chart
4 bags of word problem creation materials
Small group worksheet
Computers
Student Grouping list
Panther Paws (reinforcement)
Balloons

6. Possible Problems

Possible Problems Solutions

Students are not paying They will be reminded once that

attention or talking during if they do not pay attention they
lesson will not be able to do the
activities with their friends. If
they continue to be a distraction
they will be moved.
Students are playing with The materials will be taken
materials
I run out of time/I have time left Once the direct instruction
over (activity 1) is done, I will judge
the time left to determine how
long the group activities will last.
