Implementing a Strategic Plan for Lakeview Elementary School

Phase one reviewed the Lakeview Elementary data for any discrepancies and in

phase 2 the key issues were discussed. In this paper implementing a strategic plan for

Lakeview Elementary will be discussed. In this paper it will be discussed as to how one

is to address previously identified issues. Next what stakeholders will assist in

implementing such action to address the issues will be discussed. Additionally, how

would get their stakeholders involved. Last, measuring effectiveness and specifically

what data will be collected and analyzed to determine if the strategic plan was successful.

The two key issues are that the school has failed to work with the community and address

the health concerns of the students. The goal is a plan develops so that Lakeview

Elementary CMT scores are increased and student wellbeing is properly managed.

There are several steps to ensure that students are being well provided for. The

effort that needs to be in place would take many people and may span a few years to get it

right but it can be done. The first action would be to understand and clarify the VMOSA

(Visions, mission, objectives, strategies and Action Plan). What is unique about the

VMOSA, amongst other things, is that it allows your business to focus on short-term

goals while keeping sight of the long-term vision and mission (University of Kansas,

2016). Creating goals and projects using the SMART method is the next step. SMART is

unique because one can approach any project with this. There are benefits to using the

SMART method. (1) The SMART objective creates a structure and record of action (Best

Progress, n.d). (2) If done right, it can give a clear vision of what success may look like

(Best Progress, n.d). (3) Stake holders that complete the SMART objectives are likely to

handle increase responsibility and its complexity (Best Progress, n.d). (4) Last, SMART
2

has the ability to redefine and create growth (Best Progress, n.d). While examining the

relationship between motivation and goal setting, explained the employees are motivated

when given clear goals and are provided with feedback about their performance (Lawlor

and Hornyak, 2012). To reiterate SMART stands for specific, measureable, achievable,

realistic and time bound. By doing so one can make sure that all the components are

being done. Before implementing anything one must make sure that all those involved

with the initial planning are in agreement with the plan. The project goals that I would

implement in Lakeview Elementary are:

1. Create a program where students would be provided 3 meals and 2 snacks

Monday through Friday through Foodshare.
2. Team up with Boys and Girls Club, Boy Scout and Girl Scouts, Foodshare and
the community to help provide food to needy children for the weekends.
3. Provide information to all families at the beginning to the year in various
languages about discounted food stores, food pantries, social services, shelter
to home programs, and the like for families to get assistance with volunteers
4. Have local businesses have information available for families about services
5. Run a yearly grab bag event so that students have all the supplies they need
for class with help from the town committee
6. Ask the PTA to call parents about their experiences and if they have any needs
to feel free to call for support
7. Send out a yearly assessment about the families of the children in various
languages about their expectations and needs developed by teachers and social
workers.
8. Run statistics on the ELL program and find ways to improve communication
and learning
9. Start a few health initiatives in school that would teach children first steps to
being healthy through the school and community.
10. Team up with my community to develop shelters that are child friendly
11. Team up with Goodwill and the community to have a clothing and shoe drive.
Major stores such as Wal-Mart and local stores donate fresh items as well.
12. Incorporate a multicultural education curriculum within two years.

As demonstrated on this list, the goal and the stakeholders are represented in

each step. Involvement would include community, volunteers from around the

state and agencies, local businesses, support from the town and board of

education, PTA and teachers to join the effort. It is important to align the vision

and mission with the stakeholders so there is no misunderstanding. The overall

vision would be for the community to get involved with making sure students at

Lakeview Elementary are healthy and focused so that they may succeed in school.

The mission can also be to teach healthy students who are also connected to their

community. For instance marketing, publicity, recognition, more business,

increased academic performance, community building, and helping those in need.

Effectiveness would be determined by plan by developing committees and

holding the accountable for the implementation of the project. Each project

manager is responsible for have all the details mapped out. Each project is to run

numbers in terms of attendance and participation. However, ultimately

stakeholders need to see the test scores of the CMT to see if there was any real

improvement.

In conclusion it is important to note that actually implementing the plan is

more important than creating them. There are many methods that one can use to

determine how effective the programs are. It is important as well to have a vision,

with out it is will be difficult to discern between what it tangible and what its not.
