vocabulary when reading.
a) Use context to clarify meanings of unfamiliar
words.
b) Use knowledge of roots, affixes, synonyms,
antonyms, and homophones.
c) Use word-reference materials, including the
glossary, dictionary, and thesaurus.
d) Develop vocabulary by listening to and reading a
variety of texts.
e) Use vocabulary from other content areas.
The teacher will have the students read a passage
from James and the Giant Peach. (example used
can be found below template). If there are words
that the student is not familiar with, they will create
an electronic flashcard on www.quizlet.com. The
student will be assigned to, find the meaning to the
word, list words from the reading that give context
to the word used, and use the word in another
sentence.
The flashcard layout is as follows:
Front a word from the passage with which the
student is unfamiliar
Back student will provide
A) the definition and part of speech of the word
using Merriam-Webster's dictionary
B) one or two words from the context of the
reading that supports or gives clues to the
word definition (if any)
C) use of the word in another sentence they
create.
Once all of the students have read the passage and
created flashcards, the teacher will combine
everyones and create a class flashcard set to
review in class, and allow children to review at
home.

TheirnameswereAuntSpongeandAuntSpiker,andIamsorrytosaythattheywerebothreallyhorrible
people.Theywereselfishandlazyandcruel,andrightfromthebeginningtheystartedbeatingpoor
Jamesforalmostnoreasonatall.Theynevercalledhimbyhisrealname,butalwaysreferredtohimas
youdisgustinglittlebeastoryoufilthynuisanceoryoumiserablecreature,andtheycertainly
nevergavehimanytoystoplaywithoranypicturebookstolookat.Hisroomwasasbareasaprison
cell.
