Dede (Suryana) and my brother

wouldn't be here, so I'm really
thankful for them right now."

When asked how he felt
going into the final in the large waves,
he replied, "I was very stoked that the
waves were big, because I'd much
rather surf big waves than small
waves anytime!"
Runner up Koko Mitsua was
understandably disappointed about
missing out on the Crown but was
very positive, saying: "Getting
second today is a good result for
sure, and I still have another chance
next year, but I was surfing good
enough to win today and felt I just
didn't get the good waves I needed
during the final. But I'm really happy
for Andre, as he got some great
waves and scored big on them so he
deserves the win."
This is the second year in a
row that a junior surfer from the
seaside town of Cimaja in West Java
has won the Quiksilver King of the
Grom event at Kuta Beach. Last year,
Andre Julian's older brother, Sandi
Slamet, won. The brothers are both
Quiksilver Team Riders, along with
Dede Suryana, another native of
Cimaja.
Simon MacGregor,
Quiksilver Southeast Asia's
Marketing Manager, was very
pleased with the event, saying: "Its
great to see how the level of these
junior surfers is rising each year, and
not only with the kids from Bali now,
but those from other parts of
Indonesia as well. Dede Suryana has
been a great example to the junior
surfers in Cimaja and other parts of
Indonesia, and the next generation is
what we've seen here today. It's not
only Bali that has the good surfers
now, but places like West Java,
Sumbawa, and Nusa Lembongan
are producing some of the top
performers."
He continued: "Quiksilver is
dedicated to helping to develop
surfing in other areas of Indonesia
such as Cimaja, and, as a matter of
fact, we're supporting the West Java
Open, a 6 star Coca-Cola ISC event
up there next week. We are also
helping out in Thailand with an event
in Phuket this September, and
working with other South East Asian
countries like Malaysia and the
Philippines, so you can expect to see
an even greater variety of young
surfers developing in the future."

Saving the Turtles
The surfing competition also
provided an opportunity for and
spectators to interact with the baby
turtles who were released back into
their natural habitat as part of the
event festivities. The baby turtles
came from the recently created Kuta
Beach Sea Turtle Conservation, a
permanent hatchery facility
developed by Quicksilver and?
Coca-Cola Amatil Indonesia in
cooperation with the Kuta Beach
authorities to preserve the
endangered Olive Ridley turtles.
Other highlights of the day
included an Expression Session just

and Sandi Slamet paddling out with
ex pro surfer Jake "the Snake"

Expert won't rule out Octopus Paul's psychic ability
Octopus Paul may very well
have psychic powers and an
ability to predict the future,
says one of Australia's top
cephalopod researchers.
Museum Victoria's head
of science, Dr Mark Norman, has
been studying octopuses,
squids, cuttlefishes and
nautiluses - otherwise known as
the cephalopods - for more than
two decades.
While Dr Nornam admits
to being an Octopus Paul sceptic,
he says the sea creature should not
be underestimated.
"They're clever animals
with big brains and they do amazing
things," he said.
"It's very impressive what
Paul has done and I don't know if it's
psychic or not, but they're animals
that are capable of amazing things,
so who can tell.
"I'm not going to burst other
people's bubbles because I don't
believe in it personally."
Octopus Paul has become
a World Cup sensation by correctly
forecasting the results of
Germany's seven games in South
Africa and finishing the tournament
in style today by predicting a
Spanish victory in the final.
The eight-limbed
mediterranean octopus would
make his prediction by choosing
between two containers of food
marked with the flags of the
competing countries.
But Dr Norman says he is
wary of the science behind Paul's
string of eight correct predictions.
For one, he says octopuses
are colourblind, so the colour of the
flag is irrelevant to Paul.
"It could be all sorts of
factors. It could be just the pure
random luck, but it could be that the
person setting up the experiment
had a gut feeling of which way it
was going to go and put the better
food in that tank," he said.
"They'll go for a prawn or a
crab well ahead of going for a
mussel that they have to pull open.

"I think it's amazing but it
comes down to whether you
believe in predicting the future and
I'm on the agnostic or sceptical side
at the moment.
"But having said that I don't
want to underestimate how
amazing these animals are and
how clever they are... they're doing
pretty well for a super snail relative.
"They can recognise
individual people in a crowd, they
can do really clever things like learn
to unscrew the lids off jars to get
prawns out of the inside, they can
collect up half coconut shells and
carry them around like portable
armour and jump inside if
something comes along.
"So they're doing cool
things out there beyond their
psychic abilities."
Better than psychic
Dr Norman says in the wild,
octopuses do far more interesting
things than predicting the future.
"We've got one octopus
called the mimic octopus in
Indonesia that we discovered that
impersonates poisonous black and
white sea snakes by putting six
arms down a hole and waving the
other two around like a writhing sea
snake," he said.
"It can also swim up in a
water column impersonating
poisonous lionfish with all the barbs
sticking out on its body so it's sort of
like the ultimate shape changer."
He says all octopuses have
an amazing ability to shapeshift
and camouflage.
"Their skin is a super high
resolution colour changing organ -

we got out of the trees," he said.
"And because they've
got no hard shell, an animal
that's a metre across could
squeeze through a hole the size
of about a 20 cent piece, they

"They're also very clever at
finding their crab or prawn or fish
prey, they can drill through shells
and poison the occupant inside and
then crawl inside and eat the
scallop or whatever it is."
He says Australia has 76
recognised octopus species,
including the spaghetti octopus,
which has long, thin arms that look
like spaghetti, and the deadly blue-
ringed octopus.
"They have flashing blue
police lights to warn everybody to
keep away because they're full of
poison, which is enough to kill
people in about two minutes," he
said.
"Some of the big octopuses
get to a three or four metres arm
span and some of them are the size
of your fingernail, so there are
many octopus variations."
Dr Norman says whether
Paul has psychic powers or not,
one thing is for certain: this is Paul's
last set of World Cup predictions.
He says most octopuses
only live to be one to three years
old, and Paul is already two-and-a-
half.
"Paul is doing well to be that
old," he said.
"They're very, very fast
growing creatures - a lot of them
only live one year and then die of
old age, they're very different to say
deep sea fish.
"It's definitely Paul's last
World Cup prediction, unless he
becomes a champion of octopus
longevity."

As usual I hope the week
finds you all well, healthy and in
good spirits. Finally the world cup
soccer is finished which means

me that this little card will give me
a 30% discount from everything in
the place I was sceptical, food,
booze, spirits, everything, So, I
went down a few Saturday nights

Megan Fox married Brian Austin Green
on June 24th. WWN also confirmed that
she is still a man.
Megan Fox was born Mitchell Reed Fox
in Rockwood, Tennessee, and was encouraged
by his parents to dress in women's clothing and
to pursue his dream of becoming a supermodel
and actress. Mitchell legally changed his name
to Megan in 2003, but his parents still use his
birth name. Darlene Fox told WWN, “We're so
proud of Mitchell. He always wanted to become
the world's most beautiful woman and to walk
down the aisle in a wedding gown and now…
he's done it!”
Darlene went on to say that she doesn't'
feel like she's lost a son, but instead feels she's

Australian mobile invention could be desert lifeline
Australian researchers have
developed software that
allows mobile phones to
communicate with each
other where there is no
reception.
It is a new mobile phone
system that promises to work
anywhere and potentially help
save lives in a disaster.
Researchers have gone
to extraordinary lengths to test it
out in a remote desert wilderness
in South Australia.
In a landscape of deep
valleys and rugged red ochre
mountains, the tests have been a
success.
They were carried out at
Sillers Lookout, a lonely cliff that
juts out like a long finger at
Arkaroola in the Flinders Ranges.
The area is dead quiet
apart from a few flies and some
unexpected chatter.
Researchers from

technology works.
They have
been carrying out
tests in a range of
situations where
there is no mobile
phone reception.
Dr Paul
Gardner-Stephen,
who is leading the
project, has made software that
allows ordinary mobiles to
communicate without phone
towers or satellites.
"Here at Arkaroola the
nearest mobile phone coverage is
probably 100 to 130 kilometres
away," he said.
"We are in chasms and
gorges where even satellite
phone would actually have a lot of
trouble because you can't see
enough of the sky to acquire the
satellite."
Dr Gardner-Stephen says
his device actually incorporates a
compact version of a mobile
phone tower into the phone itself.
"So using the WiFi
interface that is in many phones
today that you would normally use
for internet or that kind of thing, we
are actually carrying voice over
that, but in a way that doesn't
need to go back to a central
repository anywhere," he said.

The signal between
phones is limited to a few hundred
metres but by adding more
devices and small transmitters
the range can be expanded to
cover a much bigger area.
Dr Gardner-Stephen says
the system could provide an
instant mobile phone network in a
disaster.
"With Haiti what was
actually observed was that their
mobile phone network and their
landline phone network was
essentially knocked out for the
first 48 hours after the
earthquake," he said.
"It was really about a week
before it was back to the point
where people could fairly readily
make calls.
"What research has
actually shown is that the vast
majority of the response to a
disaster is actually from the local
people there, so if we can provide
them with ease of
communications as soon as
possible after the earthquake, not
48 hours, not 72 hours but
potentially minutes after a
disaster, then we can help them to
start rescuing people from rubble
and generally rebuilding,
maintaining law and order."
The researchers' next
step is to increase range, improve
sound quality and develop a way
of air dropping the system into a
disaster zone.
