Wildlife rehabilitation is a growing activity with a rapidly expanding base of knowledge and ever-increasing
professional standards. Generally, by law, free-ranging native wildlife is a natural resource that belongs to the
public. Wildlife rehabilitation is regulated by state or provincial and federal wildlife agencies.
In an increasingly urbanized world, people are less likely to have personal knowledge of and experience with
nature and wildlife. When they encounter wildlife in their communities, people both want and need informa-
tion about how to co-exist with their wild neighbors. Reducing human-
wildlife conflicts can help both wildlife and humans. Rehabilitators
often provide critical education which helps reduce human-wildlife
conflicts and expands the sense of stewardship of the natural world.
Rehabilitators can provide valuable assistance and advice to growing
numbers of people who value wildlife and make personal efforts to help
wild animals in need.
