TPF 4023- Research Methodology Proposal Job Hunting 1

1.0 Abstract

Job hunting system is an online system that help undergraduate students to find the job
after graduating the university. It replacing the manual system which students need to fill the
form of application for the job to the company. Instead, students now just use the computer
and find the job via online. In current existing system, the job may show to the students but the
problem is they having difficulty to find the job based on their education field and the
requirement need. Besides, it take time for a company to accept the application of students
due to many applications is sent at same time. As the result, many students did not get
response from the company that they sent the application and led them went unemployed and
some of them might get the job, but not in their field. This led them difficulties to do the job
and it may affect the entire company. Hence, new Job hunting system is created to overcome
the problem such as sort/filter the job based on the requirement fit with their education filed.
In our system, we use the method Weight Sum Model (WSM) as an approach to solve the
problem above and able to run the system perfectly.

2.0 Introduction

Now a days, there are many industry that needed a worker because technology has evolved. But
based on statistic of unemployed that was take from Department of Statistics Malaysia, the rate for
unemployed is increase by year to year. This because the people dont know which company is need a
worker or where the places that match with their want.

Traditionally, people will find job in newspaper, call the company and wait for interview. So this
procedure take a long time for selecting the worker that match with the requirement for company. This
because the company need interview many people, and maybe it take a couple days. More the people
also do not know the requirement for the job, so they need contact with the company for get more
information details. So this ways is not conventionally for us now. We have a technology that evolved
day by day, so we take advantage from that by develop a system that can give a benefit to company and
people.

Basically, with the developed of Job Hunting system, it can reduce a burden for people to find a
job at Malaysia. The user just need search what type of work, and the system will suggest it. Like
traditionally, people need go to all interview for a job to all company, now with this system, company
will call you for interview. So it will reduce the number of interview for people, and save the time.

This system will make people apply the job with the details of user that needed as a worker,
then company will see the application that was applied form user. If the company interest with them, so
company will accept for interview. So this system overcome the problem that was faced by people that
hard to find a work, and also the company where it very hard to filter the hundred people in a single day
during interview.

3.0 Problem statement

Competition for job

A main problem to job hunting system is millions of people apply the jobs at same time and
perhaps thousands applying for the same job, because the convenience factor appeals to all of the
competitors as well. Even when searching for jobs outside your education field, we're competing
with job seekers in the same region and people applying for the same job from every other region.

Limited Job Pool

Because only about some job openings are advertised, online job-hunting is largely
ineffective, compared to using professional networking as a job search tool. Internet-only job
hunting does not give many jobs for the students in their education field. It may difficult them to
find job and some of them had to take a job outside of their field and ability.

Company requirements doesnt match

Applying for a job in the company have to take a test before the candidates get a chance for
an interview. The question in the test is the benchmark of the quality and capability that the
company wants to see and analyse. The application for the position that is available in the company
must be coherent/parallel with the capabilities of individual that applied. Job Hunting System can
help employers to analyse their candidates either the position is suitable or not.

4.0 Objective

Objective of a project is defined as the project outcome and how to achieve it. It is also a supporting
action to ensure the goals of the project are accomplished. The objectives of this system are stated
below:

1. To design and develop an efficient system that would produce the required results without
wasting much time and valuable resources.
2. To apply a weighted sum method algorithm in the Job Employment System.
3. To test and evaluate the system performance compared to the current system.

TPF 4023- Research Methodology Proposal Job Hunting 4

5.0 Literature Review

The literature review is a process to read, analyse, evaluate, and summarize the scientific
material in respect of any topic (Fink, 2015). To come up with all the elements in Job Hunting System, a
review of related literature was conducted by gathering information from the research papers and
journals. The main elements in Job Hunting System is pre-employment system and Weighted Sum
Model (WSM).

5.1 Pre-Employment System

Pre-Employment System is a system that function as screening process that gives the
efficiency and reduces the time required for a company to hire a new employee. The efficiency
can be improve using a web based that give more strategic and allow launching a job screening
with a single mouse click. Some of the advantages of the automated pre-employment process
include the following:

Recruiting
o Higher volumes of applicant traffic can be accommodated and creating a larger
applicant pool and better yield rations of quality individual to hire.
Screening
o Allow for more efficient use of recruiting officers time. Applicant self-scheduling
features mean the recruiter officer will spend less time in scheduling the interview
and appointment. Recruiter officer can use the time more efficiently by conducting
interview with only the competitive or more worthy candidates.
Hiring
o Increases the quality of applicants and allow the employers to choose the highest
qualification candidates. Thus, increases the job performance and also reduce cost
of employee turnover.

5.2 Weighted Sum Model (WSM)
Weighted sum model (WSM) is the most commonly used approach, especially in single
dimensional problem. If there are m alternative and n criteria then, the best alternative is the
one that satisfies (in the maximization case) the following expression (Triantaphyllou, 2000):

Figure 5.2.0: WSM formula.

Where n is the number of criteria, aij is the value of weight assigned to the j criteria.
Performance of each alternative under each criteria aij relative weight for each criteria Wj.

There are a few steps in WSM method:

Step 1: State each criteria with a weight of importance.

Step 2: Overall score calculated by multiply the criteria score with weightage.

Step 3: Sum up the value of all score and find a total weight to rank and find the best
alternative or user.

6.0 Methodology
Methodology is the process, step or stages used to collect information and data for the purpose of
making decisions. The methodology is chosen from the software development life cycle model. There
are many models included in the software development life cycle. For this project, iterative and
incremental model approach has been chosen.

Iterative And Incremental Model

6.1 Initial Planning Phase

In this phase, all the activities are plan according to a given period to complete the
system. This phase begins with brainstorming session with the supervisor to come up with the
idea and the title for the project. From the brainstorming session with the supervisor, the
project title have been decided which is, Job Hunting System and the preferred technique is
using Weighted Sum.

6.2 Planning Phase

After deciding the title of the project and the approach to be used, the discussions
continue on defining the problem statements, objectives and scope for the system. In order to
get a better understanding, existing systems are reviewed and the constraint and limitation are
gathered.

TPF 4023- Research Methodology Proposal Job Hunting 10

6.3 Requirements Phase
During this phase, existing systems are analysed and all the requirements that are
needed to develop the new system are identified. In this phase, the information regarding Job
Hunting System either in the form of journal, articles or research papers are gathered and
studied. The information obtained about the pre-employment system and weighted sum
method (WSM) is crucial in producing the end product and achieve the system objectives.

6.4 Analysis And Design

In this phase, the design of the system is created and the development of the prototype
based on the functionalities that will be built. The data or requirement obtained during the
requirement phase is transformed into a design. Examples of diagrams that will be builds are
Framework, Context Diagram (CD), Data Flow Diagram (DFD) level 0 and 1, Entity Relationship
Diagram (ERD), Data Dictionary and Interface Design. All of these diagrams are built as a
guideline of the flow of the system.

6.5 Implementation And Testing

After designing the interfaces, the implementation phase is applied. In this phase, we
will make an overall improvement to the system modules. A discussion with the supervisor is
held to seek solution for any error or fixing bugs in the system. Unit testing and integrated
testing for the module is done to find errors and solutions to overcome the problems. Then
finally, the entire modules of the system will be combined and tested before it is implemented.

6.6 Evaluation
During this phase, the system is evaluated before deploying it to end user. The system
must fulfil the entire system requirement before it is able to be deployed.

TPF 4023- Research Methodology Proposal Job Hunting 11

6.7 Deployment
Once the evaluation is done, the system is deployed in the environment so that the
targeted user can use the system. The system will be in steady state which meets all the
objectives of the project.

6.8 Software And Hardware Requirement

In the making of this project, software and hardware tools are very important and
essential. The system cannot be developed successfully without these software and hardware
requirements.

7.0 Method (Added Value)

In the development of Job Hunting System, there is various technique can be used through
Multiple-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM). MCDM is concerned with structuring and solving
decision and planning problems involving multiple criteria. Its purpose is to support decision
makers facing such problems. Typically, there is no unique optimal solution for such problems,
and it is necessary to use the decision makers preferences to differentiate among solutions.

Weighted Sum Method (WSM) is the best known and simplest multi-criteria decision making
method for evaluating a number of alternatives in terms of a number of decision
criteria. It stated that the higher the weight is the more important the criterion.
The current Weighted Sum Method helps the decision maker to choose when the
scenario is static.

In general, suppose that a given MCDA problem is defined on m alternatives and n decision
criteria. Furthermore, let us assume that all the criteria are benefit criteria, that is, the higher
the values are, the better it is. Next suppose that wj denotes the relative weight of importance
of the criterion Cj and aij is the performance value of alternative Ai when it is evaluated in terms
of criterion Cj. Then, the total (i.e., when all the criteria are considered simultaneously)
importance of alternative Ai, denoted as AiWSM-score, is defined as follows:

TPF 4023- Research Methodology Proposal Job Hunting 13

For a simple numerical example suppose that a decision problem of this type is defined on
three alternatives A1, A2, A3 each described in terms of four criteria C1, C2, C3 and C4.
Furthermore, let the numerical data for this problem be as in the following decision matrix:

C1 C2 C3 C4

Alts. 0.20 0.15 0.40 0.25

A1 25 20 15 30

A2 10 30 20 30

A3 30 10 30 10

For instance, the relative weight of the first criterion is equal to 0.20, the relative weight for the
second criterion is 0.15 and so on. Similarly, the value of the first alternative (i.e., A1) in terms of
the first criterion is equal to 25, the value of the same alternative in terms of the second
criterion is equal to 20 and so on.
When the previous formula is applied on these numerical data the WSM scores for the three
alternatives are:

Similarly, one gets:

Thus, the best alternative (in the maximization case) is alternative A2 (because it has the
maximum WSM score which is equal to 22.00). Furthermore, these numerical results
imply the following ranking of these three alternatives: A2 = A3 > A1 (where the
symbol ">" stands for "better than").
