b) Figure 2 illustrate the stress strain diagram for steel alloy. The specimen has the initial
diameter of 15 mm with a gauge length of 45 mm. A load of P = 20 kN has been applied
to the specimen. By taking = 0.5, determine the diameter and gauge length after the
loading applied.

a) The stressstrain diagram for an aluminium 2014-T6 alloy specimen having an original
diameter of 15 mm. and a gauge length of 50 mm is given in Figure 3. Estimate
approximately:

i) The proportional limit.


ii) The modulus of elasticity for the material.
iii) The load on the specimen that causes yielding based on 0.2% strain offset.
iv) The ultimate load the specimen will support.
v) The modulus of resilience

QUESTION 3

a) The components of plane stress at a critical point on a A-36 steel machine element are
shown in Figure 4. Evaluate if failure (yielding) has occurred on the basis of a) the
maximum shear-stress theory b) the maximum distortion energy theory. Given yield
stress of steel is equivalent to 250 MPa.
