Introduction

1. Gain audiences attention and interest: My friend Tina wants to lose some
weight, but she doesnt know the detrimental effects of fast food. She eats
fast food all the time, not realizing that it not only is a horrible food for weight
loss, it additionally causes a slew of health horrors: diabetes and multiple
types of cancer the worst among them.
2. Reveal topic [and relate topic to your audience]: Today, I will attempt to
communicate all the negative effects that fast food has on public vanity but,
most importantly, health. In this day and age, many people seek to satisfy
their vanity and instead ruin their health in the process, whether it be from
poor eating habits, disordered eating, or just a general lack of knowledge.
Thus, through this speech, I hope to perhaps not only help my friend Tina in
their quest for weight loss, I hope to also help anyone else who is rightfully
confused by all the conflicting information that is out there.
3. Establish your credibility and good will: The facts which I will use to validate
my argument come from several academic texts which thoroughly cover this
subject, and prove the following main points (read next part):
4. State main points: Fast food is something which all people attempting to lose
weight and/or become healthy should avoid all together due to the [1]
hidden, truly unwanted ingredients found in the food such as plastic, [2] the
harmful components of the food which negatively affect peoples hormones
and immune systems, and [3] the very fact that the consumption of these
foods give people what is opposite of ideal nutrition. What people must
hopefully understand is that long-term, weight loss cannot be achieved
without first making health the priority.
5. Transition: First, lets discuss how the majority of us are consuming plastic
when we go to McDonalds . . . (yes, you heard that correctly [optional])

Body

1. First main point (Hidden, Truly Unwanted Ingredients)

(make declarative statement) When most people go to convenient fast
food restaurants and order what they believe to be lunch, they are eating
a chemical known as phthalates, which is commonly found in vinyl
flooring, backpacks, building materials, and drugstore products.
a. Fast food restaurants are often large food chains which depend on
mass production to produce their over-processed, ready-made food
products servers quickly heat up and assemble at chain restaurants.
The more machines the food comes in contact with, the more plastic is
in the food.
i. The more machinery, plastic, conveyor belts, and various forms
of processing equipment that food touches, the more likely the
food is to contain higher levels of phthalates. (Ferdman, 2016)
ii. High toxin levels in the human system cause that system to
become ill. The body cannot focus on weight loss or more
specifically, fat loss when it is trying to heal from illness.
b. The ingredients in the food products themselves, namely chicken
nuggets, reveal their unsightly ingredients. Essentially, the chicken
isnt chicken at all.
i. The nuggets were only 50 percent meat at best. The rest? Fat,
blood vessels, nerve, connective tissue and ground bone the
latter, by the way, is stuff that usually ends up in dog food.
(Godoy, 2013)
ii. High toxin levels in the human system cause that system to
become ill. The body cannot focus on weight loss or more
specifically, fat loss when it is trying to heal from illness.

c. Transition: So now that we know the food is not food, lets explore the
reasons why fast food causes many harmful effects on health.
2. Second main point (Harmful Components which Effect Peoples Hormones
and Immune System)
(make declarative statement) The hormonal content of the meals
offered at fast food restaurants have been strongly linked to hormonal
disruption and lower sperm count.
a. Plastic is toxic when consumed by organic organisms, which include
humans. Studies have pointed out a strong correlation between fast
food eating and plastic consumption.
b. People who ate 35% or more of their total calories from fast food in
the last 24 hours had around 24% higher levels of DEHP compared to
people who didn't eat fast food, and close to 40% higher levels of
DiNP. (Sifferlin, 2016)
c. Bodies ingesting materials not meant to be consumed leads to
changes in hormones. Furthermore, the fat content of the food, which
is higher than the already high-fat beef and pork (due to cooking
methods) food products these restaurants offer, cause the human body
to not be able to absorb nutrients effectively.
i. This, for example, is seen when humans experience Type 2
diabetes, which is often mistaken as a high-sugar diet issue,
when the issue is actually due to a high-fat diet.
ii. As is more thoroughly discussed by Dr. Greger, blood sugar
requires insulin to allow glucose in the blood into muscle cells,
forthwith requiring multiple enzyme activations which finally
lead to glucose transport. As long as blood fat remains low, the
body completes this transaction naturally and with ease,
perpetuating a healthy bio-atmosphere. Glucose intolerance is
the result of high blood fat inhibiting the process. Fat in the
bloodstream can build up inside the muscle cells, creating toxic
fatty breakdown products and free radicals that block the insulin
signaling process. (Greger, 2016).
iii. Thus, high fat diets cause diabetes, obesity, heart disease, etc.
As we can begin to understand, the high fat food products of fast
food chains would not be ideal for weight loss if they
simultaneously are the causes of the above conditions.
d. Transition: Now, lets cover the last main reason why my friend Tina
and anyone seeking weight loss and/or health should stay away from
all fast foods.
3. Third main point (The opposite of ideal nutrition)
a. (make a declarative statement)
b. Empty calories
c. Devoid of the most important nutrients Use complete sentences for
main points and sub points
d. What this leads to (cravings, fatty brain, etc.)

Conclusion
1. Signal end of the speech (say phrase to let you know)
2. Summarize points and restate them
3. Reinforce central idea

III. Second main point (Harmful Components which Effect Peoples Hormones and
Immune System)

Declarative Statement: The high fat and hormonal content of the meals offered at fast food
restaurants have been strongly linked to diseases and conditions such as diabetes, heart disease,
and obesity, as well as hormonal disruption and lower sperm count.

a. Plastic is toxic when consumed by organic organisms, which include humans. Studies have
pointed out a strong correlation between fast food eating and plastic consumption.

b. People who ate 35% or more of their total calories from fast food in the last 24 hours had
around 24% higher levels of DEHP compared to people who didn't eat fast food, and close to

iii. Thus, high fat diets cause diabetes, obesity, heart disease, etc. As we can begin to understand,

simultaneously are the causes of the above conditions.

d. Transition: Now, lets cover the last main reason why my friend Tina and anyone seeking
weight loss and/or health should stay away from all fast foods.

IV. Third main point ("The opposite of ideal nutrition")

Declarative Statement: Fast foods not only cause a lot of harm on the human body, they also
lack important nutrients that would make them an ideal food for maintaining good health.

a. Fast food is often considered to be junk food, which describes food "high calorie or calorie
rich food which lacks in micronutrients such as vitamins, minerals, or amino acids, and fiber but
has high energy (calories). These foods don't contain the nutrients that your body needs to stay
healthy. Hence, these foods that has poor nutritional value is considered unhealthy and may be
called as junk food" (Ashakiran & Deepthi R, 2012).

i. Junk food makes people full on food which doesn't give their bodies what they need, so people
crave more and more food. That is to say, when people are craving foods, it is their body telling
them that the food is not meeting nutritive requirements. Instead of eating the right foods,
however, they reach for the same foods which caused them the issue to begin with. Since high
consumption of high-fat, high salty foods lead to weight gain and water retention, fast foods that
are high in such things should be avoided for anyone looking to lose weight and/or become more
healthy.
V. Conclusion

1. To conclude, fast food is possibly the worst food anyone could consume if they are interested
in losing weight. High fat diets such as those evident on a fast food chain lead to disease heavily
correlated with obesity including diabetes and heart disease.

2. Furthermore, because fast food has large traces of phthalates, a man-made chemical often
found in non-digestible items such as vinyl flooring and backpacks, the food is toxic to eat,
making weight loss impossible for a body which is trying to detoxify itself.

3. Lastly, because fast food items - saturated of fat and salt - are full of all the wrong sort of
calories which make people crave more of the same foods, unaware that what they are
consuming is a form of nutritional starvation. If people are really interested in losing weight for
the long term, they should seek high fiber, high water foods which perpetuate health and well-
being.
