An introduction to our mentors:

Charity Mentors offers short-term, pro bono mentoring to charities and not-for-profit organisations in
Oxfordshire. Our mentors work alongside charity leaders and managers to help resolve specific
strategic issues. They bring substantial commercial, public sector or voluntary sector experience at
senior leadership level. Each of them is a volunteer who appreciates the particular challenges of
working in the not-for-profit sector. Their role is to act as a guide so that you can develop solutions and
find the right direction for your organisation. Mentors are not consultants and do not give professional
advice, but they are knowledgeable and prepared to share information, ideas and experience in an
impartial way. The list below gives details of some of the people who work with Charity Mentors as
mentors. Although we have indicated their particular areas of expertise, all our mentors have extensive
experience in most aspects of strategy and organizational development, and we try to take a number of
different factors into account when discussing the match between mentors and charity leaders at the
beginning of a project.

David Astor. Co-founded Jupiter Asset Management and Classic FM. Previous roles include Chair of
Fundraising Committee of Richmond Fellowship, Chair of CPRE, Chair of Action for Prisoners Families,
Chair for Southern Arts and Chair of The Theatre, Chipping Norton. Initiated and chaired Turn2us and
negotiated start-up funding. Patron of Wychwood Project and Oxfordshire Family Mediation. Particular
expertise in positioning organisations, initiating projects, fundraising and negotiating with government
departments.

Mire Brankin. A founder of Oxford Executive, which is one of the longest, established coaching
organisations in the UK. The focus of their work is on individual leadership and management skills and
the development of teams and organisations. Chair of icap, which is a psychotherapy and counseling
service for immigrants. On Board of Oxford and Cherwell Valley College. Particular expertise in
facilitating leaders to bring knowledge and skills to new circumstances and new cultures.

Sam Clarke. Currently Chair of New Economics Foundation, Low Carbon Hub, Oxford North
Community Renewables and Low Carbon Oxford North. Previously Chair of Friends of the Earth, Stop
Climate Chaos, Ethical property Company, CEO of Oxfordshire MIND and World University Service,
Fundraising Director, Oxfam. Particular expertise in fundraising, governance and community
renewables.

Dr Martin Dare-Edwards. Early career with Shell and now UK Manager for Infineum, directing a
company project in Shanghai. Formerly Chair of Oxfordshire Local Enterprise Partnership and now
Chair of local advisory committee for the governments Growth Accelerator initiative which gives
strategic support and advice to enterprise. On corporate council of Oxford Inspires and previously on
advisory board of Common Purpose. Particular expertise in strategy and management and the
resolution of both people and business issues so as to improve effectiveness and efficiency.

Dai David. Chartered accountant. Previously senior partner and now consultant with Critchleys LLP
Accountants.Non-executive director of two local companies. Various voluntary roles including honorary
treasurer of the Barbarians Football Club. Particular expertise in financial systems, strategy and taking
an overall view of an organisation.

Graeme Freeman. An IT professional, who was Chief Information Officer BBC Worldwide from 2002
until 2010, and non-executive director of BBC Audiobooks from 2007 2010. Co-founder and Director of
Freeman Clarke, providing IT directors to industry and part of founding team of Pennies a social
enterprise where purchasers can round-up the purchase price to give to charities. Particular skills in
project management and product strategy. Crystallizing strategy and turning it into action.
Jill Judson. Career teacher in the state school system, spending final 19 years as Head of two
secondary schools, including Cherwell in Oxford. Last 3 years working as an education consultant,
particularly on matters concerning school improvement, leadership, governance and head teacher
appointments (for Association of School and College Leaders). Former Brookes Governor, current
Board of Oxford Playhouse. Particular expertise in managing people, bringing about change, strategy,
and facilities management.

Philippa Lyons. Recently CEO for the Berks, Bucks and Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust, and before that,
Oxfams Fundraisng Manger. Director of WREN and chairs the WREN Oxfordshire County Panel. Also a
director of Wildlife Fundraising Central Ltd which she set up in February 2013. Particular expertise in
change management, team building and strategic development within the voluntary sector.

Grant Phillips. Associate Fellow and Sector Consultant at the Said Business School, providing careers
support to students in the commercial banking and strategic marketing sectors. Formerly with Barclays
Banking Group as Caribbean Director and Director of Communications and Training for the Group's Euro
programme. Helped finance and build two orphanages and a school in Nepal. Former Chair of SMART. The
Art Room and the Oxfordshire Common Purpose Advisory group. Particular expertise in communications,
media and presentation skills, managing change, strategic marketing and project management.

William Powlett Smith. Retired from Ernst & Young in 2008 after 25 years as a partner in London and
Reading. Since then he has held several business, teaching and charity appointments. Particular
expertise in strategy and restructuring, accounting, budgeting and management and trusteeship.

Mark Shelton. Chartered accountant and tax expert. Financial Director of Reuters Africa and West
African shipping company. Financial controller for Volkswagen, Howden Group and TI Group. Project
manager for various companies including FD Oxford Policy Management, an international development
consultancy. Also reviews contracts and appraises tenders. Mentor at Valid International who work in
the arena of malnutrition in Africa and mentor for Young Enterprise. Particular expertise in planning,
budgeting and forecasting.

Otto Stevens: A qualified FCCA with over 25 years of finance, consultancy and corporate finance
experience. Founder and Managing Partner of Waypoint, which provides strategic, financial and talent
advisory services to creative services businesses. Prior to Waypoint, Otto was a senior Partner with SI
Partners where he was responsible for setting up and running the commercial and financial advisory
practice. Particular expertise in financial and investment analysis as well as strategic and talent
management consultancy skills. Managing growth, assessing strengths and weighing up options.

Martin Stott. Public service entrepreneur with experience as an elected member and senior officer at
both county and district government levels. 30 years experience in the social enterprise and charity
sectors as a director, trustee, employee and mentor. Includes the Phone Co-op, Oxford Playhouse,
Modern Art Oxford, Restore and the Ethnic Minority Business Service. Currently Vice Chair of both
Garden Organic and the William Morris Society and UK board member of the Fund for the Environment
& Urban Life. Particular expertise in strategic analysis, planning and managing the interface between
boards, staff and other stakeholders.

John Taylor. CEO of the Austrian based international plastics and petrochemical company Borealis AG,
until his retirement in December 2007. Previously, CEO of British Nuclear Fuels PLC. Also worked at
Exxon Chemical for 26 years in the UK, Belgium and the USA. Today he is a Chemical Industry Advisor
to CVC Capital Partners, a trustee of The Friends of Dorchester Abbey and involved in other local
projects. Particular expertise in change management, strengthening customer/supplier relationships,
driving innovation and motivating and developing people.

Jens Tholstrup. Director of Oxford Economics, a leading international economic research and
consultancy firm. Formerly worked in investment banking and Executive Director of Oxford Analytica.
Trustee of the International Institute of Strategic Studies, Council member and ex-Trustee and Chair of
finance committee of Atlantic College, fundraising committee Oxford Playhouse; external member of the
Audit, Risk and Remuneration committee of St Peters College, Oxford. Former trustee of Hackney
Business Ventures in London, and former trustee of the Oxford School of Drama. Particular expertise in
strategic analysis, financial and economic analysis.

Graham Upton. Vice Chancellor of Oxford Brookes from 1997 to 2007 and Interim Vice Chancellor of
the University of Cumbria. Currently President of the Oxford Playhouse, Deputy Chair of the Board of
Governors and Chair of the Finance Committee at the University of the West of England, Chair of the
Board of Oxford Expression Technologies and Chair of Experience Oxfordshire. High Sheriff of
Oxfordshire for 2013/14. Particular expertise in strategic leadership and planning, organizational
change, and team development in organisations of all sizes.
