Republic Act. No. 1425 or the Rizal Law is a law approved which mandates the
further study of the life and works of Jose Rizal, our National Hero.

Senator Claro M. Recto authored the Rizal Law. It was signed by the President on
June12, 1956. Claro M. Recto, was known to have a great sense of nationalism, this
formed a ground on why he came up and authored the act. It is to free our country
from the hands of other nations and be independent- which is exactly the ideals of
what our hero fought for.

A section of the law states:

Whereas today, more than any other period of our history, there is a need for a re-
dedication to the ideals of freedom and nationalism for which our heroes lived and
died;

Whereas, it is meet that in honoring them, particularly the national hero and patriot,
Jose Rizal, we remember with special fondness and devotion their lives and works
that have shaped the national character;

Whereas, the life, works and writing of Jose Rizal, particularly his novels Noli Me
Tangere and El Filibusterismo, are a constant and inspiring source of patriotism with
which the minds of the youth, especially during their formative and decisive years in
school, should be suffused

This part of the law gave out an important point as to why it is a need to study Rizal.
The concept of freedom and nationalism were very essential. The law was written
during the years that the country was still dependent on the U.S Government and
were just recovering from the hold of Japanese Occupation. The country wants
independence and is just developing our identity.

Another point:

Whereas, all educational institutions are under the supervision of, and subject to
regulation by the State, and all schools are enjoined to develop moral character,
personal discipline, civic conscience and to teach the duties of citizenship; Now,
therefore,

Section 1. Courses on the life, works and writings of Jose Rizal, particularly his novel
Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo, shall be included in the curricula of all
schools, colleges and universities, public or private: Provided, that in the collegiate
courses, the original or unexpurgated editions of the Noli Me Tangere and El
Filibusterismo or their English translation shall be used as basic texts.

It is pointed out that educational institutions are good vehicles to introduce the
course- spread and embed the concepts and values on the formative years of the
Filipino youth. Also in collegiate level where the development of priorities and
deciding the individuals career track will make them realize that the country should
also be put into priority and be served.

With these values, an individual will develop a discipline which will produce an army
of Filipinos who will give a better future to the country.

In conclusion, even though the Republic Act 1425 or the Rizal was written decades
ago, it is still giving an impact to our people especially to the younger ones. After
all, we are still looking and rooting for the independency our countrys patriots, our
National Hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, even the Senator Claro M. Recto are fighting for. As we
all know, presently we are still on the hold of the influence of foreign countries.
