Title of the S-L Program: Love without Borders
Service agency partner: Medicins Sans Frontieres (MSF)
Practicum period/date: Mid-October to Mid-November
Practicum venue: Under the Skylight
Promotion tools: Posters on Facebook and YouTube
Service target: Tertiary students
Number of service target/volunteers: TBC
Program fee & Pay method (if any): N/A

2. Background
Tertiary students will be chosen to be the service target. This is because we are a part
of them and we will know their (our) thought better which facilitate the program
running. Also, they have a broader horizons so they will concern more about issues
happening around the world.

The purposes of the S-L program are to let students realize their important abilities
and dispositions, increase their understanding of curriculum content, enhance their
sense of personal and collective efficacy and contribute to the betterment of society.

3. Theme of the Program

We would like to bring the tertiary students attention to the social violence problems
around the world. The name of the program will be Love without
Boundaries.

4. Aims and Objectives

Aims
There are three aims for our service-learning project:
1. To raise tertiary students attention to the
problem of social violence
2. To promote MSFs work and the difficulties
faced by them
3. To raise fund for MSF
Objectives
For tertiary students, we hope they would know more about MSF, social violence and
the victims by providing chances for them to get in touch with these kinds of
information. Although Hong Kong was far away from the violence, as global citizens
are with wide horizons, young adults should be more aware of the problems.

For MSF, we hope they can get more attentions and supports. It is always good to
have more attention as it means there will be more voices helping them to spread the
message out. Also, as MSF mainly rely on private funding to work, it is necessary to
let more people to know more about them, especially for what they have done, in
order to get more donations.

Students who join the S-L program can practice skills on creating and organizing
events, communicating and cooperating with groupmates. Moreover, the students will
be more care of the society.

5. Service Work Plan

Date: Mid-October to Mid-November
Venue: Under the Skylight and on Facebook
Introduction/Activities/Rundown

Facebook Page
As Facebook is a popular social media platform of our service target, we believe that
setting up a page to update the information of our campaign on Facebook will be a
good way to get access to them. Two videos, posters and photos taking in the booth
will be uploaded on the page. We will also share the news about social violence issues
and share the posts of the MSF (https://www.facebook.com/i.like.msf/?fref=ts)
PIC: Chak Mei Chuen
(Set up and management)
Deadline: 31/10/2016

Booth
As communicating with target audience in person will be a more direct way to
promote our messages, we are planning to set up booth under the skylight and
approach students in campus. We will set up the booth on 14-16 November from
12:00 to 15:00. It is because people tend to be more relax after lunch and it will be
easier for them to accept new ideas.

a. Display Boards
In the booth, two display boards will be used to show MSFs work on the
aspect of social violence in various countries. As tertiary students like
travelling abroad, we will choose some unusual countries that most of them
have never been there and list the social issues happening/happened in these
countries. The information will be shown in the form of a map. Bullet points
will be used so the audience can get the ideas quickly and people will be more
willing to accept simple messages instead of complicated one. Photos and eye-
catching color will be used on the boards in order to draw the attention of
people passing by. When they visit our booth, we will explain the information
like a tour guide to make them feel like they are travelling. In addition, leaflets
will be given to the students for them to recap the information. The leaflets
will be designed as a leaflet of travelling agency, like the sample below.

b. Game
After delivering the messages to our target audience, we will invite them to
play a game related to these messages.
Firstly, we will ask them to choose a country randomly. According to the
information we told them just now, select the appropriate materials to start
their journey, e.g. nutrition packs, tents, drugs and clean water. Then we will
provide some photos of the social violence happened in that country and see
whether the materials they choose is appropriate when they are facing those
problems. After that, we would tell them what MSF has done to alleviate the
problems in order to raise their awareness on MSF via their interest.
The game use the approach of novelty. It is unusual for tertiary students to
think in the perspective of the frontline volunteers. This can help them to have
a better understanding of the difficulties faced by the MSF. This game can
sharpen their memories of the information in a more casual way.
Prizes will be given to those who can complete the game with right choices, in
order to encourage participation. The prizes will be some iconic food or drinks
of the countries we talked about in our display board. For example, Royal milk
tea from Myanmar, Snacks from Pakistan etc. If they fail to complete the
game, we will draw some words or logos related to our program on their arms
or face as a punishment. However, we will not tell them about the punishment
before the game. The punishment aims to raise other students curiosity when
they see the drawings on the the punished students so that they would like to
come to our booth and at least have a look.

Deadline: 13/11/2016

c. Photo Frames
Taking photo is one of the common interests of tertiary students nowadays.
Most of them are going to upload their photo onto social networking sites to
gain praise so as to fulfill their senses of achievement. In order to draw their
attention, we will invite them to wear a doctor gown and take a photo with our
photo frames. There will be backdrops of some landmark of the countries that
MSF has helped before, like Syria, Afghanistan, Iran etc. When the
participants take the photo in front of these backdrops, they will feel like a
MSFs doctors who visit these countries. We will collect and rearrange the
photos in the shape of the MSFs logo later. Below is an example from the
internet. The combined photo will be uploaded on our Facebook page and tag
the students in the photos so their friends on Facebook will see the photo.

The symbolic meaning behind the activity is that even the students cannot
participate in the frontline of MSF in reality, they can still help to raise their
friends and familys awareness to the MSF by simply taking a photo and
share with their friends and relatives. We will provide some props such as
some doctor gown and nurse customs, masks and syringes etc. in order to let
them to pretend they are working in the frontline. A student can also become
one of the doctors or frontline volunteers of the MSF. They will feel like
they are as awesome and brave as the doctors and volunteers in the frontline.
The combination of photos into the MSFs logo implies similar meaning that
they are part of the MSF and they are doing great contribution to the MSF.

We aim to have 100 tertiary students taking photos with our photo frames. We
decide to use instant camera to attract students because film camera is
often used by a hipster ( ), which is the ideal image of most
tertiary students . Besides, we will encourage them to support our Facebook
page by giving a Like. We will then send the softcopies of their photos as a
return. We hope this activity can bring a delightful memory for the service
target and encourage them to share their joy with their counterparts. Hence,
more people will raise awareness to message from MSF and their meaningful
mission.

Mandy Chiang Nga-Man is a very popular hipster in Hong Kong.

She is also a big fans of instant camera.

d. Fundraising
Participants who want to get the instant photos need to pay $15 for
one and every $10 for another one more. After knowing more about
social violence and the MSF, they will get the initiatives to help the
service target of MSF. We will also provide some colour pens and
decorative materials for them to design their own photos.
We aim to have $100 collected each day.

Videos
Tertiary students nowadays love to watch interesting videos on the internet as a kind
of entertainment. Thus, we are planning to produce a video and upload it to YouTube
and our Facebook page in order to attract our service targets attention on MSF. We
hope that we can reach 500 views for the video.

The video will be a game of choosing different situations. The game will let our
service targets to choose the follow-up actions by linking them to another video, and
so on. The video set require participants interaction so they will be more concentrate.
After watching these set of videos, tertiary students will know more about the jobs of
MSF and the plight of people suffering from social violence.
