Course number and name: EC403T, Microwave Engineering

2. Credits and contact hours: 4 credits, 4 contact hours/week

3. Course coordinators name: Muktikanta Dash

4. Text book, title, author, and year:

Microwave Engineering by D.M. Pozar, 2nd Edition, John Willey & Sons.
Microwave Devices and Circuits by Samuel Y. Liao, 3rd Edition, Pearson Publishing
House.
Electromagnetic waves and Radiating Systems by Jordan & Balmain, 2nd edition , PHI

5. Specific course information

a. Brief description of the content of the course (catalog description):
Microwave Engineering introduces the student to microwave analysis methods from the
Maxwells field theory view point. Passive and active devices commonly utilized in
microwave subsystems are analyzed and studied. Design procedures are presented along
with methods to evaluate device performance. Scattering parameters are defined and used
to characterize devices and system behavior. However, a large amount of course coverage
attempts to reconcile the field theory standpoint with the low frequency circuit theory
model.

b. Prerequisites or co-requisites: Electromagnetic Theory (EC307T)

c. This is a required course in the program

6. Specific outcomes of instruction

a. The student will be able to :
After completion of the course, the student should be able to formulate lumped element
equivalent model of high frequency transmission lines, and can use transmission lines
as circuit elements.
To Solve of transmission line problems using graphical techniques (Smith Chart) and to
design of stub tuners for impedance matching.
To analyze, and design of waveguides, coaxial lines, resonator cavities.
To understand the governing principles of solid state and vacuum tube microwave
sources and other high frequency passive components.
To analyze and design different types of antennas and understand the radiation
mechanism.
To estimate link budget and design microwave terrestrial link considering different
atmospheric effects.
