ENGLISH

1. Revolution Day (July 23rd)

2. This is Egypt's National Day, the occasion of which dates back to the time of the Turkish
occupation of Egypt.

3. The story begins with the emergence of a faction of Free Officers within the Egyptian
army led by Gamal Abdel Nasser, which perpetrated a coup d'tat on the twenty-third of
July, 1952, putting it in control of various state matters and other critical areas. The army
forced the Turkish king at the time to relinquish power and abdicate his throne,
eventually forcing his exile on the twenty-sixth of July 1952. The monarchy was thereby
deposed and Egypt has been an independent Republic ever since.

4. From that time to date, and due to the importance of this event to all Egyptians, the day
has become an official public holiday that is marked by special annual celebrations.
