HISTORY
INDEPENDENDE OF THE UNITED STATES AMERICAN
The tensions between the settlers and the
British during the 1760s and 1770s led to the
War of Independence, which extended from
1775 to 1781. On June 14th, 1775, the
Continental Congress, meeting in
Philadelphia, established a Continental Army
under The command of George Washington.
Proclaiming that "all men are born equal" and
endowed with "certain inalienable rights,"
Congress adopted the Declaration of
Independence, drafted largely by Thomas
Jefferson, on July 4, 1776. In this date, they
celebrate The Independence Day of the
United States. In 1777, the articles of the
Confederation established a weak confederal
government that operated until 1789.
Following the British defeat by US, assisted by French and Spanish forces, the United
Kingdom recognized its independence and sovereignty over the territory east of the
Mississippi River.
