Reflections for Practicum EXS 310

Summer/Fall 2015

1. During your internship you will experience many different emotions. You
will be expected to work as a professional, but at times you may not feel
that way. Please comment on your first impressions of your internship.
What are your concerns, your excitements, and your questions? What do
you think will be the most important and challenging aspects of your
internship?

My supervisor did a very good job of getting me acclimated with

everyone on the very first day. He introduced me to almost
everyone who came through the door, and I think that made it
much easier for me to get the right first impressions with
everyone there. I was very nervous at first, but once we got into
the swing of things, I felt right at home. I think the most
challenging parts of my internship will be just learning the
different stations of the truck and around the arena.

2. There are many important characteristics of successful exercise science

professionals. Some include integrity, trustworthy, compassion, and more.
Choose two characteristics that are important for you and describe an
experience that has made this connection more significant for you

I think that being passionate and being eager were two very
important characteristics for me. I had to show both at multiple
times when I was asked to look up something about the team for
the broadcast during a show. It needed to be quick because they
were currenltly talking about the statistic and it showed that I
really wanted to find out the fact and that I was fast to do it, and
I think that showed a lot from me.

3. Identify two or three major stresses that you have experienced since you
began your internship. Describe some of the methods that you have used
to cope with the stress. (Look over the job stress inventory in the course
assignments folder under lessons.)
The first stressful thing I endured was my first trip to the tape
cage to find replays for the game broadcast, and I was told to get
a certain tape, but I wasnt sure the right one to get , normally it
wouldnt be a big deal but this was a rush during a game, I
panicked and just chose one, and luckily it was the right one. The
second time was when I had to work the camera crew when we
were short and had to work the light. This interview was being
broadcasted on live tv so I really had to margain for error, when it
was all said and done I was told I did a great job, but it was very
stressful.

4. Balancing your internship responsibilities with the other responsibilities in

life can often be taxing. However, this balance is preparing you for the
real world. Please reflect on how you have managed your many roles as
an intern, student, family member, significant other, etc.

Having this internship and also being a student athlete was not
an easy task at all. I took 18 credits this semester, the most ive
taken here. It has not been easy but the most important thing to
do is to manage your time. Everyday I look over what I have to
do and if I have to go into work or not and basically I base my
schedule on what I have to do for that day, and it hasnt been a
problem so far.

5. Pick two or three words that describe how you are feeling about yourself
as an exercise science professional. Describe an experience or situation
that you think may have led you to feel this way. (Check out the Sport
Management competencies in the course assignment folder under
lessons.)

The two words I would use to describe myself as a sports

management professional are hardworking and self-aware, for
these types of jobs you have to work hard there is no way getting
around that. These certain jobs need constant hard work around
the clock. Also you have to be self-aware of yourself and the area
you are in. You have to know what you can do and what you cant
and the same goes for what you say. You have to know what you
should say to certain people you are around.

6. Identify a negative or disappointing experience that has occurred during

your internship. What was your reaction to this experience? Explain. (Look
at staff and /or client interactions; supervisor and staff interactions; client
and staff relationships.)

The negative experience I saw really didnt have to do too much

with me, It was the day that ESPN was in the building and we
were trying to figure out certan cameras we were able to share
with them for both of the boradcasts. ESPN was not cooperating
on the matter and people got into yelling matches at points and
at some points it was directed at me, but I knew that it was just
because people were stressed. So I just did what I was told, and
kind of pick and chose where I would ask my questions and in the
end eventually everyone was calm.

7. Describe a time in your internships when you felt that your values were
threatened. How did this make you feel? What did you do?

Lucky for me I didnt really feel that way at any time. I was
treated with nothing but respect at CSN. Im glad that I didnt
have a point like that, but I worked with a lot of professionals
and thats how they treated me every day.

8. Describe a time in your internship when you witnessed potentially

unethical behavior. What about the behavior was unethical? How did this
make you feel? What would you have done differently? (Find a code of
ethics for your future profession and list the web address)

The only type of unethical behavior I might have witnessed was a

little bit of vulgar language in the truck behind the scenes. I
mean all of these people are comfortable with each other so I
understand that there is a certain relationship built to be
confortable to sometimes say what you want around them. I
honestly would not curse at all in the work place, thats just how I
feel as a person and thats what a professional does.

9. Describe a time in your internship when you witness an incident of

conflict. How was the situation resolved? If you were the administrator,
how would you have handled the situation?

The one time I had faced conflict was when my supervisor was
dealing with a new coordinator and they were having an issue
with the timing of the tv to commercial break, the new supervisor
had messed up the sequence a couple times, and my supervisor
had gotten angry and raised his voice at her, Shortly after that
he apologized and was able to resolve the issue. I would have
handled without yelling, but that is easier said than done.
Everyone gets angry sometimes and it is normal to lash out
sometimes.

10. Most exercise science professions involve working in a team.

Describe how individuals at your facility work as a team to accomplish a
task or goal. What is your role in the process?

Basically the whole tv broadcast is worked with teamwork. My

supervisor was the producer of the show, he worked on the
sequence of video, the director worked on what camera anges are
shown, the tape guys are in charge of In game replays, and the
sound are in charge of what music plays. There is also the bug
operator which is in charge of the live scoreboard and the
graphics epartment who is in charge of the on screen graphics.
My job was to mark certains plays in the game so they can be
easily obtained as highlights for future games.

11. Reflect on your time in the internship so far. What have you
learned? What seemed intimidating or unknown in the beginning, but now
is an everyday activity? How have you grown as a professional? Did the
negative or disappointing experience (from Question #6) change your
perspective on your internship? In what ways? Did any positive changes
occur (for you or one of your co-workers) from this negative or
disappointing experience? Explain.

So far my time has been awesome here, I have learned so much.

All of the different stations and objectives I would have to do on
an everyday basis, but as time went on it was simple and I was
doing them with ease. I feel I have grown so much as a
professional I have finally been able to learn the ways of a
professional in the workplace. The negative experience I had did
not change my view at all because it was not a big deal. The
positive experience I had was getting closer with my co-workers,
and just building good relationships with others.

12. Describe how being involved in an internship has influenced your

attitudes or behaviors toward yourself, your career aspirations, and/or
your relationships.

My internship has influenced me to strongly consider a career in

sports media, after the experience I had, it just really stuck out
as the whole process went along. I am hoping that I have built
great relationships with my co-workers so that they can help me
with my career aspirations in the future.
