Maintenance & Debug for Optical System of BS-120

1 Check and adjust the intensity of optical system

Check the background of the optical system from the operation software like the following picture
shows.

Normally the background of each channel should be around 48,000 to 62.000. If the background
of each channel is lower than this range or the light intensity lower than 70%, that means the
optical system needs to be improved. We should first try to improve the intensity of each channel
by debug software. If the light intensity can not be improved anymore, it means the lamp assembly
needs to be replaced.
Improve the intensity of the optical system by Debug Software.
1. Change jumper on the main board.
The jumper on the main board is used to protect the parameters written on the chips, as long as we
need to modify any of the parameter, its needed to change the position of the jumper. After the
modifying, please remove the jumper to the original position. Please do as the following.
a) Shut down the analyzer and computer as normal.
b) Remove the back cover of the BS-120 like following.
c) Then you can find the main board and the Jumper. Change the jumper position from
GND to VDD as shown below.

2. Save the original parameters as backup

Backup for the parameters before changing any one is necessary, in case of something unexpected
happen.
a) Connect the analyzer and the operation PC with serial communication cable. Switch on
the analyzer and PC as normalwithout running the system software.
b) Copy BS-120 debug software to the PC.
c) Double click the icon as shown below to run the BS-120 debug software.

d) Go to Command and Main Unit tab.

e) Click download parameters, and wait until the work flow below this window stops.
f) Click Mechanical Reset, if the machine can reset itself that mean the connection is
successful, or check the steps above.
g) Click the Enable modifying parameters.

h) Click the Setup button on the right-upper corner. Input the password bs120 in the blank,
and then click OK.

i) Go to the tab of Para and Speed, choose the sub unit e.g. the ISE unit, then click Query.
As long as all of the parameters for this unit is shown on the screen, click Save and
name it as a *.txt file in a folder for backup. (E.g. you can name the file ISE unit.txt).
Repeat this step to save the parameters for all of the units as backup.

j) After that, click the Setup button on the right-upper corner again, and click ok directly
without inputting any password.

3. Change the intensity gain

a) Go to the Photoelectric tab, choose Others- Light Base- click start. Remove the first
cuvette according to the tips above start button.

b) After the process is finished, the current background for each channel will be shown on
the screen. Normally the background between 48,000 to 62,000 is required.
c) If the intensity needs to be improved, it can be done automatically by debug or
manually.
i. Automatically by debug
1. Go to the Photoelectric tab, choose Others- Test Gain- click start. Remove the
first cuvette according to the tips above start button.
2. When finished shown above the start button, that means configuration
automatically has been successful.
3. Repeat step a) of Change the intensity gain, check whether the background for
each channel is ok or not now.
ii. Manually
1. Go back to the tab of PARA and Speed, choose Reaction Unit, then Query.
Select the parameter for certain channel e.g. the one for 340 nm, and input the
number you want. Change 10 every time step by step is recommended.
Remember: Increasing the parameter, the intensity will decrease; and
decreasing the parameter, the intensity will increase.
2. Click config button to make the new parameters come in effective.
3. Query again to confirm the parameter has been changed.
4. Go back to Photoelectric tab, choose Others- Light Base- click start. Check the
background of the channel which been adjusted.
5. Repeat the steps above till all of the background between 48,000 to 62,000.

2 Something else if replacing the Lamp Assembly is needed.

If the background for each or certain channel can not be improved by debug software anymore
after all of steps above, replacing the Lamp Assembly is necessary. Following here
a) Place the Main Power to OFF. Wait at least 15 minutes until the lamp and its housing
cools down.
b) See figure below, unscrew the two screws on the table panel and remove it.

c) Loose the retaining screw manually for about 5-7 circles (do not get the screw out).

d) Use your finger to pinch the porcelain socket and pull it out for 3mm, and then rotate 45
degrees counterclockwise, to pull the lamp assembly out completely.
e) Place the new lamp assembly into the porcelain socket. Place the lamp base part with
gap to the hole of the light source. When the lamp base reaches half of the depth, rotate
it clockwise until the restraining screw is fixed. Screw the retaining screw on the lamp
base.
f) After the lamp assembly is assembled and the socket is fixed, install the table panel.
g) Turn on the machine, check the background by the operation software or debug software
as above. Pay special attention to the background in case of the value higher than 65535.
This is also unaccepted, out of the range from 48,000 to 62,000. For a new lamp, adjust
the background of each channel to around 60,000 is strongly recommended.
h) As long as all of the background is around 60,000, log on the operation software with
username: bs120, and password: Bs120@Mindray!
i) Wait 20 minutes until the light source is stable, and then enter the Maintenance and click
New Lamp. Follow the software instruction to finish the process.
