Learning Styles in Elementary Education

The elementary education system is defined as the primary education, which comes along

after one completes preschool but has not yet joined the middle school. In other words, it occurs

between the fifth and the sixth grades. Teachers at elementary levels have the need to understand

the most effective teaching styles to ensure that they prepare their students adequately for the

middle school. Therefore, they ought to understand the diversity of learning approaches in and

outside the classroom environment. The varying learning styles range from visual, auditory,

kinesthetic, to verbal settings. Mostly, teachers should engage the most efficient methods of

teaching by considering the nature of their students since individuals have different ways of

learning and grasping information.

As mentioned above, children develop different learning styles as they progress at various

educational levels. One of these approaches in the elementary school is verbal learning. In this

case, those who concentrate mostly on words instead of auditory sounds use this form to acquire

knowledge (Diverse Learning Styles in Early Childhood Education). At an elementary level,

the students have already learned the skill of verbal learners. Therefore, they could prefer to

continue acquiring information through reading, writing, as well as lending their ears to what the

teacher says. In some cases, the auditory students would enjoy listening to music and other

sounds (Pritchard 65). Most importantly, teachers at this level ought to understand that although

students at the elementary level have grown up and can understand the importance of verbal

learning, then a different kind of energy should be added in teaching them. In fact, the focus

ought to be more in involving students in various activities including the learning aspects and

course purposes. Therefore, verbal teaching and learning will play a huge role in impacting

students at this level with knowledge as they prepare for the sixth grade.

The other style of learning in an elementary school would be the visual approach that

pays attention to pictures spatial knowledge. At the elementary level, students are likely to use

the visual elements to enable them to remember information that they learned inside or outside

the classroom settings. In most cases, visual information is presented in the form of pictures and

images (Learning Styles). Most evidently, students using the visual approach will often notice

numbers and words whenever they engage at the elementary level. In fact, they would do so

better than their fellow students who use other methods of learning. Therefore, it is crucial for

teachers at this stage to realize what each of their students uses to understand information easily.

The aim of this comprehension is to ensure that they have the opportunities to engage with their

most preferred system (Learning Styles). It is unfortunate that some educators would adopt the

teaching style that is most suitable to them forgetting that that can be quite frustrating to some

students who are unable to relate directly to the approaches.

The other most prominent method of learning at the elementary level is the solitary or

intrapersonal approach. At this point, a student has the preference of learning along by the use of

self-studies (Lepi). Therefore, one aligns the goals of their education with their individual beliefs

as well as values. In most cases, such students are capable of creating personal interests in

particular topics of study where they can study on their own. Using the solitary approach, one

drives themselves by what they perceive to be their feelings at that moment. In fact, self-

modeling seems to be the most obvious aspect of this type of learning. In effect, such students

need to be cautious of their role-playing in that their minds have tremendous effects on their

performance (Lepi). However, a student using this form of acquiring knowledge should be

encouraged to be diversified since not all information will be received in this manner. It is vital

to expanding their capabilities in other learning styles to assist them in succeeding in a diverse

world. Students using individual learning have a high preference for using case studies and

examples to grasp information easily as opposed to those applying the visual approach.

Therefore, teachers ought to understand what interests a student the most.

The other preferred mode of learning at the elementary school is the kinesthetic or tactile

form. A student who uses this kind of approach is more tuned to physical experience rather than

the other types of learning. In fact, they are fond of touching, holding, or doing things practically.

In other words, they are used to finding proofs through feeling with their physical senses (Tips

for Educators on Accommodating Different Learning Styles). Teachers ought to understand that

such students can fail to consider the instructions first before engaging in certain practical

meaning that their mind is usually tuned to holding. Therefore, the educators need to engage in

various enhancing activities to ensure that students applying this approach have acquired

knowledge in the most effective manner. Teachers can draft checklists of items that they ought to

teach to ensure that everything is covered. They can also use textured learning materials during

experiments to make sure that such students relate directly to what they do. Failure to engage in

physical activities can lead to lowered morale by such learners meaning that they might fail to

concentrate or comprehend what is being taught inside or outside a classroom.

Furthermore, there are those at an elementary level that would prefer using the logical or

mathematical form of learning. That being said, they are fond of applying logic reasoning and

models in their approaches to comprehending concepts. Their primary objective is usually to

understand the causes of content and skills that they possess (Schmeck 92). Teachers can notice

this group of students by their preferences to remember detailed concepts. They always strive to

determine the patterns to their thought processes. In most instances, they will learn math sans

sciences easier than others, and this is accompanied by reason and explanations to their answers.

Teachers should understand those using the style to make sure that their potential is maximized

(Schmeck 102). The method also needs to be backed up by others because, at some point, one

can find it hard to change to existing characters or traits.

The other approach to learning would be social model that involves students who like to

interact with their classmates. In most cases, learners who like using this system of learning are

outgoing in nature and prefer it to other forms. In this type of learning, teachers use the

collaboration teaching method where students are allowed to form groups with others. In effect,

the approach plays a role in assisting students in problem solving, boosting their communication

skills, and improved interactive skills (Schmeck 106). Moreover, the approach plays a role in

determining the sectors that such learners need help. Such students prefer to be close to their

peers and will always be seen to raise ideas for the purposes of interaction. They appear jovial

and contribute to different class activities. Therefore, social learning can be utilized to ensure

that students share knowledge with others.

All in all, the elementary school prepares one to join the sixth grade meaning that one has

to be impacted with substantial knowledge in various subjects. Most importantly, different

students at this level have unique and varying ways of learning to mean that their teachers have a

role to play in ensuring that they apply the most effective ways that fit every learner. Some of the

methods discussed in this paper include the use of visuals, auditory approach, kinesthetic,

intrapersonal, and logical forms. It is important to understand that every student feels

comfortable when engaging in their most preferred mode of learning.
